It’s a rare phenomenon that I write and boast about a new rock band, but L.A. based newcomers, Lunden Reign, packed such a punch with its debut album … an extraordinary- high-energy- esoteric rock gem, integrated with profound lyrical content, that I felt compelled to applause this exciting new progressive-rock powerhouse.

But Lora and Nikki are not just bandmates; they are also engaged to become married. It’s a fascinating love affair that began when Lora received an unanticipated kiss from Nikki while she performed with her band onstage at a popular club in Tarzana (San Fernando Valley region of the city of L.A.) called Petie’s Place. Nikki was hosting a jam session there with some local musicians. Lora G. lives a transgender lifestyle, which is certainly nothing new in the world of rock and roll. But Nikki and Lora’s inspiring musical association, unified by a genuine respect and love for one another is exclusive.

LORA G. (Espinoza-Lunden): is Mexican-American. She began performing with her band at age 16 on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. Lora’s drummer in high school was Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, Guns N’ Roses, The Cult). Lora left music and developed an amazing Emmy winning career in television and radio including working for Disney over 14 years. Lora and Nikki joined forces in the spring of 2013, and now she begins a new chapter in her life as lead guitarist and songwriter for Lunden Reign. Lora defines the band’s sound as “Big Beat Progressive Rock.”
NIKKI LUNDEN: grew up in Iowa City, Iowa and became lead singer & songwriter for a band called The Trollies, before becoming an acoustic artist. Lunden enjoyed a 15 year career of performing for live audiences before moving to Los Angeles in September of 2012. After arriving in L.A. she immediately entered the Musician’s Institute where she graduated in 2013. Nikki says one of her most gratifying professional experiences so far has been to record at Abbey Road Studios in London.

AMERICAN STRANGER: is the incredible debut album from Lunden Reign. The album was recorded at Capitol Records in Hollywood, Abbey Road (Studio 2) in London and Stagg Street Studios. Luis Maldonado produced, played guitar and co-wrote with
Lora G. on various tracks. Maldonado is a platinum-selling songwriter & recording artist who has collaborated with John Waite, Patrick Monahan (Train), Lisa Marie Presley, Glen Hughes, Michael Schenker, UFO, and with his own band, 'Into the Presence.' Other album credits include mix engineer Geoff Pearlman (Linda Perry), Morgan Young on drums, Hector Maldonado (bassist for Train) and Cellist Ana Lenchantin (Queens of the Stone Age, The Eels).
The album's concept is a complete story from end to end. It was designed to be a sort of 'rock opera' about intolerance and those willing to stand up to it as well as those it's destroying. Lunden Reign has also signed a distribution deal for American Stranger with Cleopatra Records in Los Angeles.

I had the great pleasure of chatting with Lora G. and Nikki Lunden about the band’s new release American Stranger …Their musical collaboration and how they fell in love … My infamous ‘Field of Dreams’ wish question … And much-much more!

Here’s my interview with /lead guitarist/songwriter/keyboardist/ Lora G. and lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/Nikki Lunden of … LUNDEN REIGN.

Ray Shasho: Lora, you wrote “The Savage Line” which was dedicated to the families and soldiers of “The Chosen Company” who bravely fought at the deadly “Battle of Wanat” on July 13, 2008.

Lora G: “I thought we had to do something to preserve the memory of those guys, and that’s where we came up with that concept of “Savage Line”. My dad was a marine and used to tell me how lonely and cold it was in Korea, and he went over there twice, I can’t even imagine anyone going over there once. So I just wrote from what he told me and from what I read about ‘The Chosen Company’. This happened in the Nuristan Province of Afghanistan, I read about the description online, about what some of the people wrote about, how alone they felt and how they missed their families. The description of the battle is in the song, and is very specific to that battle. But I kept it somewhat vague so any soldier could relate to it, but the specifics were about that particular battle in Wanat. There’s a little bit of commentary in the beginning where … this wasn’t against our soldiers but against our government …because even though I am so pro- U.S.A., I felt horrible that we sent our troops to war without the support they needed. I’m not pro-war just pro-soldiers. There’s a line in the song that says … “Is it war or is it crime” and that’s my one commentary in the song.”

“We hear a lot of music today that is angry but not directed at anything, we wanted to not be angry but issue based and directed. That’s what we wanted to do, it’s nothing new, but it’s kind of been forgotten, and we’re trying to bring that back.”

Nikki Lunden: “The music you hear on radio today sounds like the same thing repeated over and over again but with different singers and we’re a little burned-out over the Top 40 stuff. We’re just trying to make a change in the music and trying to get people to start thinking again.”

Ray Shasho: Nikki and Lora, you both mesh so well together, musically and personally.

Nikki Lunden: “I’m very fortunate that Lora and I found each other, and in what I thought was a very huge city, turns out to be kind of a small town.”
Ray Shasho: How did you both meet, I know you had your own bands at the time, did one of you open for the other?

Nikki Lunden: I was hosting a jam session in Tarzana (Los Angeles) and Lora had brought in a couple of the singers that she had been working with at the time. We talked a little but I was pretty busy that night and wasn’t really able to sit down and chat with her. So a couple of days later I found her on ReverbNation, left her a message, and she called me. We were on the phone for probably two hours talking about music and what I was doing out here in Los Angeles. I had just moved here from Iowa City, Iowa and she invited me to one of the bands rehearsals, and the rest is history after that.”

Ray Shasho: Let’s get back to ‘Lunden Reign’s debut album “American Stranger” … the official release date is March 17th and some critics are already labeling the sound of the band as ‘Original Big Beat Progressive Rock’ … But I’d like to characterize the group’s sound as … Progressive-Powerhouse-Rock! “Mary” was originally released as an EP … and “The Light” a heavy rocker with a very cool melody is definitely one of my favorite tracks.

Lora G: “Mary” and “The Light” were recorded with ‘The Lora G Band’ and I wasn’t completely happy with them, but when we recorded the new album, and working with Luis Maldonado, we were able to remodify the tracks to fit the Lunden Reign sound. So several songs were reworked from previous periods when we were in other bands, and other tracks are brand new like “Hush and Whispers,” “American Stranger” etc. Once we nailed the sound we wanted for Lunden Reign, we realized we could go back and get some of our other material, and that has worked out really well for us.”

Ray Shasho: I find it remarkable that I couldn’t contrast the Lunden Reign sound to anyone else’s, and that’s a compliment in itself. I don’t give many new bands kudos, but Lunden Reign has all the right tools to become successful in this haphazard music world.

“Love in Free Fall,” another favorite could easily be a James Bond film intro-soundtrack!

Nikki Lunden: “We’ve been getting a lot of good responses on “Love in Free Fall,” when we were putting together the track order and we kept coming back to that one …then decided to use it as the opening track of ‘American Stranger,’ and I think it’s a perfect fit because everyone’s been going crazy about that song, so we decided to shoot it straight out of the gate and not holding back anything, and just gets right to the point right away.”

Lora G: “That one really shows a lot of Luis Maldonado’s chunky guitar styles. I’m more of an open note kind of dreamy player. Dreamy notes and sort of things like that, the melodic chords, and I create the riff, but that really chunky heavy stuff is Luis. He’s a world class guitarist. He performed with John Waite for years, also Glenn Hughes, Michael Schenker, and he just finished a tour with Lisa Marie Presley and Bigelf. He’s also a demonstrator for the Rivera Amplifier Company and we got lucky because Hiwatt endorsed me, which was fantastic! When we found out that Hiwatt was going to endorse us … we were shocked and we quickly looked on their webpage and it had all these legendary acts from Nirvana to The Who. Then there was Lunden Reign and it was sort of like …Who? (All laughing)”

Ray Shasho: Talk about the track… “28 If” (Without, Which Not) which has sort of a Joan Jett & the Blackhearts tempo to it.

Nikki Lunden: “That song is geared towards the artists that we lost at the age of 27 … Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Richey Edwards … written mostly about Richey Edwards of the band Manic Street Preachers. Every time I get onstage I really enjoy singing it.”

Ray Shasho: Have you performed all the material from the new album onstage yet?

Lora G: “Every one! I think the toughest to perform live was “American Stranger.” We finally nailed it when I went to the twelve-six string double neck and that’s how we pulled it off. I switched to the twelve-string much like Jimmy Page did in “Stairway to Heaven” and it allowed the song to come through. Then I do six strings in combo with it on my guitar. It took us awhile to get that one ready for stage but now we can do them all onstage.”

Ray Shasho: “When Love Lies” had a bit of a Blondie melody…

Lora G: “It’s basically a heartbreak song, somebody I was with for about seven or eight years and then we broke up … the seven year itch kind of thing, but going on and learning to forgive that person and that I could emotionally move on from that relationship. But it didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt and the concept was that I thought we were in love and I realized that love can lie. It was exactly what the title says … “When Love Lies.””

Ray Shasho: “Hush and Whispers” … let’s talk about that track.

Nikki Lunden: “About standing up to intolerance. It was actually one of the songs that we had gone back and forth about making it the opening track. I really love the beginning of that song. In the end we thought that “Love in Free Fall” was more of a powerhouse with cleaner vocals, we get a little bit more gritty on “Hush and Whispers,” it’s a little darker, having two faces, knowing who this person is one minute and not the next.”

Ray Shasho: Nikki is “Love in Free Fall” your favorite song to sing?

Nikki Lunden “Oh my gosh, it’s hard to say, it depends on what mood I’m in really … “Love in Free Fall” is extremely fun to sing, I love the part going into the bridge. “The Savage Line” is another favorite, drawing a lot of emotion inside, and sometimes I’ll cry while I’m singing it because the story that I’m telling is just so intense. “American Stranger” does the same thing. And sometimes on “It’s About Time” because that’s my story. It’s about leaving home and coming to California, it’s my moving away song, and so that one can get pretty emotional too. So to pick one is an impossible task, but I guess “American Stranger” will take the number one spot today.”

Ray Shasho: Lora do you have a writing process for composing these inspiring lyrics?

Lora G: Nikki can tell you … when I write a song, I’ll rewrite it like four hundred times because it’s in my edit nature from working in Television. I’ll edit and edit until I like the song. For “28If” it originally had over 42 verses … I’m not kidding you. But I finally cut it down and finished writing it.”

“I was driving with Ana Lenchantin who wanted to meet Terri Nunn, the lead singer of Berlin in person; we were going over to her house for lunch. They had played together at a show a long time ago but never formally met. During the drive, I was telling her about the concept, the most bizarre thing; the concept came from Grace Slick, who I had met during the time I had lived in Santa Rosa. On the drive, I was chatting with her and she looked at me really shocked. I thought you don’t like the concept? She said no, do you know about my Brother Luciano? I said I know about your sister Paz who was the bassist for Perfect Circle, and then said, what about your brother? She said my brother died at age 27, he committed suicide. I had no idea. Because of that I had to rewrite the lyrics over again, because I couldn’t write a song that she could potentially be playing on and take a risk of hurting her feelings or insulting her. So I rewrote the entire bridge. I wrote it as if I was her talking to her brother, and that’s what that bridge is about. So the bridge is my tribute to her little brother. When I played it for her, I was so nervous, and she liked it. Later she came back and did that amazing cello on the bridge of it. Isn’t that a crazy story? So that’s how I write, it’s more inspirational.”

Nikki Lunden: “I’m more of a lightning bolt type writer, I’ll get one little short lyric line in my head and it’s …Go! If it’s not written down … melody thought out and chords pretty much figured out in about half an hour. A lot of times I don’t even come back to it, it’s too much of a struggle. It’s got to come out like water in a faucet … if it comes out clean and clear that’s good … if it’s brown and icky, not going to do it. (All laughing) I’ve has some times when I’ve woken in the middle of the night and written out a song right then and there. And I’ve lost a few things … oh I don’t want to get up and get out of bed! But you have too. So Lora and I have completely different writing styles and we’ve been learning how to co-write together. She always comes up with the riffs first and the concept of what she wants the song to be about. Where I’m wham bam thank you ma’am, write and get out of there. But Lora is a peach to work with and I love her to death.”

Lora G: “We’re almost opposite in everything we do musically, but we complement each other, the things I can’t do, she can do. And a lot of the same … what she can’t do, I can do.”

Nikki Lunden: “I’m pretty blessed to have Lora as co-writer, teammate, bandmate, business partner and life partner … she pushes me harder than anyone ever has. In the past two years or so that I’ve been in Los Angeles, I’ve worked harder than I’ve ever had, become more disciplined than I ever had, I have a better understanding of how to communicate with people, and without that I don’t know what would have happened to me. I’d only been here for a few months when I first met Lora and I don’t know what would have happened if she hadn’t come into my life, I might have been working at the local hardware store in Iowa City for all I know. (All laughing) I doubt that, but she definitely keeps that fire lit in me. I learn constantly from her every day.”

Ray Shasho: Nikki, besides performing as the lead singer for Lunden Reign … you also play the acoustic guitar?

Nikki Lunden: “I do, I play acoustic, bass, a little bit of percussion … I was more of a singer/songwriter growing up and Sheryl Crow was my biggest idol, so I sort of have a tendency to write in that style …Ani DiFranco, Brandi Carlile … those kinds of female icons in the music industry. So it’s been a transition for me as well …going from cute little singer-songwriter … to get right in your face with a wireless microphone, wearing high heeled boots and black eyeliner. (All laughing) My perfect description of how I turned from little Iowa rocker to L.A. woman is … I took my guitar away and put a wireless microphone in my hand … which unleashed a person that I did not know existed inside of me.”

Ray Shasho: Nikki and Lora here’s a question that I ask everyone that I interview. If you had a ‘Field of Dreams’ wish like the movie, to play, sing or collaborate with anyone from the past or present, who would that be?

Lora G: “It would easily be Jimmy Page or George Harrison for me. I got to meet Jimmy Page about a month ago for a book signing here. He doesn’t really sign but he stamped my book for me. He was very cordial and such a gentleman, I couldn’t believe what a nice guy he was. He shook my hand and chatted with me. He took my download card and he said he’d try and download it. I heard that he loves to hear music from unknown artists.”

Nikki Lunden: “I’d love to work with Sheryl Crow, and in a full band it would definitely be Radiohead. I met Sheryl Crow in 2011 and actually have her autograph tattooed on my arm… I’m that big of a fan. She also gave me a necklace that I keep in my lockbox for fear of losing it. I take it out once in awhile and rub it for good luck. I would love to get a vocal track with myself, Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks doing some backup harmonies … the three of our voices together would be like heaven.”

Lora G: “We’re already really more than half way through with songs for a second album. The new one will have more ballads on it, kind of like Zeppelin did ballads on steroids. So they’ll be like that.”

Ray Shasho: So how did the both of you fall in love with each other?

Lora G: “Nikki was opening for my band in a club in Hollywood and I went onstage while she was performing to adjust the volume on my amps so we could come out and play right away, I don’t like people to wait. While she was performing, I was behind her doing some adjustments with my amp, and she came over while she was performing and kissed me in front of everyone. I had no idea and never even knew she had an interest.”

Nikki Lunden: “It was kind of an out of body experience and it wasn’t in my character to do something like that. I’m usually shy when it comes to that sort of thing. Something just came over me and drew me to her. Definitely a moment I’ll never forget.”

Ray Shasho: So how did the relationship develop after that?

Nikki Lunden: “Well the show must go on so I finished my set, and then the Lora G. Band finished their set, then I hung over at her house and never went back to my place again.”

Lora G: “We have a recording studio at my house and we started hanging out …and I never forgot the kiss.”

Ray Shasho: Lora and Nikki thank you so much for being on the call today ... I wish you all the best and look forward to great things forthcoming for Lunden Reign.

"Lunden Reign 'American Stranger' Album Review (06.03.2015)"

In advance of their debut album, American Stranger, LA band Lunden Reign has been getting gushing praise from musicians and other industry types already. By example, Dale Bozzio, of Zappa and Missing Persons fame, is quoted as saying, "American Stranger is a masterpiece! Every song is great!" Well, damn, what's the point of going on, might as well hang up my keyboard now.

What shall we say then about Lunden Reign. First, the band is principally guitarist, lyricist, and composer Lora G. Espinoza-Lunden and vocalist Nikki Lunden. Not sure of the relationship. Their musical style is basically melodic hard rock, big on riffage and beat. Some are saying it's progressive rock as well. But I don't hear it. In her composition, Espinoza-Lunden seems more interested in chord structure and it's development, but with these subtle flairs of nuance, in

each song. She is a riff master, and as you move through the album these riffs define Lunden Reign's sound, with little variation. Also, she doesn't appear to have any interest in playing lead. I don't recall a single guitar solo. Perhaps they were there and ever so subtle that I just missed them. Okay, there might be one in When Love Lies, but I could be wrong. What's a hard rock album without some thrilling lead guitar solos? Average? Nevertheless, Espinoza-Lunden's guitar creations and subsequent interpretations are interesting to ponder.
The album is a concept album about a girl estranged from life and relationships, so expect a lot of female angst and reflection. That is if you can catch the lyrics. There is no lyric booklet, and Nikki Lunden can sometimes be heard to discern. Sometimes her enunciation is blurry, somewhere between lisp and slur. Most times, though, she sings sweetly, often soaring, and with emotion. Combined together, Lunden has some Stevie Nicks in her soul.
So what to conclude. I'm not sure what the fuss is all about. Put the parts together, including the fine production, and American Stranger sounds good overall. But I think maybe only one or two tunes really stopped me: the very catchy, pop accessible, sound of Hush & Whispers and the bold riffs and rolling lyrics of The Light. After these things, the Lunden Reign sound kind of runs together. After the first few songs, you basically know how the rest of the album will sound. "Album Review - Lunden Reign 'American Stranger'"

From Mission Viejo, CA comes the debut album from Lunden Reign entitled "American Stranger." Their music is self-described as "big band prog rock" as lead singer Nikki Lunden's voice is a hard rock version of Sheryl Crow and Blondie. The new ten song release begins with the aggressive "Love In Free Fall," then moves on to a more "pop rock" feel for "The Savage Line" as Lunden's voice excels. Their sound could definitely catch the mainstream rock market with "Hush & Whispers," while the title-song "American Stranger" has a more country rock appeal. The band's progressive rock sound comes through in the songs "Mary" and "When Love Lies," before closing with the big vocal force of Nikki Lunden on "It's About Time." "Album Review - Lunden Reign: American Stranger - Feb 23, 2015"

Lunden Reign is Nikki Lunden (lead vocals), Lora G. Espinoza-Lunden (guitars) and Luis Maldonado (guitars). They also enlist a few guest musicians to help flesh out the sound. Nikki and Lora, from the Nikki Lunden Band and the Lora G. Band respectively first met in Los Angeles when playing at a gig. American Stranger is the band's first album.
Lunden Reign has been labeled as "big beat progressive rock" and while I get the 'big beat' and 'rock' tags, the progressive label is a little hard to swallow. Do not get me wrong,
I am really enjoying this album but aside from the occasional progressive sounding riff American Stranger is pure melodic rock.
The band cites this as a rock opera centered on our protagonist Mary who feels alone in a world filled with people who judge indiscriminately. It is a story of human perseverance
and courage and one I thought was a bit different than the normal sci-fi associated concepts I typically come across.
Lora is an excellent guitarist, especially in the rhythm department and Nikki rocks these songs with her powerful voice. This set of tunes could do very well on FM radio if given half the chance as the album is loaded with catchy riffs and melodic hooks. Songs like the catchy and heavier rock of "Love In Free Fall" and the edgy yet melodic
"28if (Without, Which Not)" will certainly plant some earworms while the mellower title track with its cello laced rhythms reminded a little of Heart.
This is a strong batch of melodic rock songs, well played with solid musicianship and excellent lead vocals. Anyone into groove laden rock drenched with powerful riffage will find lots to enjoy. A well-earned 3.5 stars.

"Album Review: Lunden Reign - American Stranger"

It has always struck me as a bit insulting that when you consider the roles of women in guitar-driven bands, they are either treated as curiosities, or they are the eye-candy representatives of something other than what you're listening to. The majority of female singers in this kind of music get broken down into two camps; the pop stars who never found their big break, or the classical singers who are used to make metal seem more dignified. There are very few true rock singers who get any attention, which is a shame for more than just the reasons of equality, but also because when they hit the mark, they can be even more effective than bland baritone man #427.

Lunden Reign is a band propelled by two women, singer Nikki Lunden and guitarist Lora G, not that such a fact matters. What's more important is that they are a classic hard rock band in a time when they are sorely needed, and they're making the bold statement of introducing themselves with “American Stranger”, a concept album.

It would be too easy to compare Lunden Reign to a band like Heart, but there's something about the chugging guitar in the opening seconds of “Love In Free Fall” that reminds me of “Barracuda”. There's a nice blend of classic rock with modern sonic touches, and Nikki's vocals are warm and inviting. The song is muscular and engaging, but lacks the bite to really be the powerful opening statement that it needs to be. “The Savage Line” follows, and as the first single, it's the introduction to the band that would have guaranteed success if this kind of rock still had a place on radio. The feeling is a bit more restrained, and the melody and harmonies in the chorus are subtly catchy, leaving you bobbing your head along before you know it.

“28IF (Without, Which Not)” has a title that is a garble of words and letters, but it's another highly enjoyable mix of the new and old, and exactly the kind of song that Lunden Reign needs to be building their reputation on. The mix of rock swagger and catchy hooks is well-balanced, and keeps the music from ever feeling the least bit poppy. There's plenty of grit and bite to the songs, which is due in large part to Nikki's ability to sing rock with all the blood and guts it needs.

“Hush & Whispers” continues the winning streak, with a driving rhythm and big hook that will probably become the band's biggest live anthem, while the title track introduces a cello to give an increased sense of drama to the composition. “Mary” is the album's centerpiece, and longest song, and features some gorgeously crisp guitar tones that cut through the mix and give the riffs the ability to attack.

By the time we get to the end of the record, two things are clear; 1) "American Stranger" is one of those rare albums that could benefit from being longer. At a taut 37 minutes, it's a brisk bit of music that passes by too quickly. I would have liked there to be one more song to flesh things out just a touch. The album feels a bit short to me. 2) However, Lunden Reign has made a damn solid rock album. Sure, I wouldn't mind if they had pumped a bit more pop sheen into some of the melodies to really make the songs impossible to forget, but that doesn't take away from the fact that what they've done is impressive. “American Stranger” is a strong outing for a debut album, and a needed statement to redefine the ways we see women in rock music.

That might be asking a bit too much of an album, but I always enjoy getting to hear reminders that the stereotypes we live with are of our own making. Lunden Reign is a Rock and Roll band out of Los Angeles, California - that formed when two local bands in the area decided to join forces. Lora G. Espinoza and Nikki Lunden were leading up-and-coming bands respectively when they had a chance meeting at a local showcase venue. The two discussed their goals and visions, and Lunden Reign was born. Pooling together their songwriting talents, Lora and Nikki began writing and creating a very unique and exciting brand of music. The result of this collaborative effort is the brilliant debut album "American Stranger". The album was recorded at Capitol Records in Hollywood, Abbey Road Studios in London, and Stagg Street Studios in LA - with the help of renowned producer Luis Maldonado. Lunden Reign has tested the waters of their music by performing at major festivals and venues in America and Europe with great success. I recently caught up with Nikki and Lora G .
R.V.B. - Hello Nikki?
N.L. - Yes, Hi.
R.V.B. - Rob von Bernewitz from New York. How are you today?
N.L. - I'm good, How are you Rob?
R.V.B. - I'm good but a little cold over here on this side. How is it over by you?
N.L. - It is like paradise over here buddy.
R.V.B. - Yeah well, try not to rub it in too much?
N.L. - (Hahaha) I hear you man... I'm from Iowa, so I'm finally blessed with the weather of California after 34 years.
R.V.B. - Do you have some of your other band mates there with you?
N.L. - Yeah, Lora's here and I think she's grabbing a soda and coming on in.
R.V.B. - Congratulations on your great collection of songs. I gave it a listen, and there

was an impressive flow from one song to the other. How long of a process was it to record that album?
N.L. - Oh goodness. I believe we worked on it for a couple of years. When I first joined with Lora in the spring of 2013, I pretty quickly went in and started with 28if. The writing process just kept on... when we would finish something, we would just go back to the studio and record more. We got the opportunity to record at Capitol Records out in Hollywood, which for a little farm girl from Iowa is pretty crazy for me. Yeah, it took a couple of years. Lora had written a couple of songs previously. We recorded "When Love Lies" at Capitol Records. The day before we recorded the song, we re-wrote the whole darn thing. It was pretty intense. (hahaha)
R.V.B. - Very cool. They sound well produced, well written, and it's hard to tell that they were recorded in different places.
N.L. - Yeah, well that's in respect to our wonderful producing and mixing team of Geoff Pearlman - our engineer, and Luis Maldonado - our producer. We were maintaining the same amps and microphones. I particularly like to record with the SM7, which is a microphone that Michael Jackson used... Bono uses it. Rather than the standard gigantic condenser mic in your face with a pop filter and you can't really move. This is one that you can hold in your hand, and I can sing in the studio like I can do live. It's like hanging on to a hot dog. I can hold it in my hand, and I can move around the room, and I can do what I need to do. The freedom of moving, instead of standing stationary, instead of standing in front of the microphone stiff as a board. Say Hi to Lora.
L.G. - We have video of her singing one of these songs, and we're gonna put it out. She sings in a recording studio like she's singing on stage. She holds the big ol' microphone that's bigger than her face.
N.L. - Most things are bigger than my face.
R.V.B. - (hahaha)
L.G. - As she holds it, and she's down on her knees, recording in the vocal room. It's really wild. At Abbey Road, they were like "You don't want to use one of our house mics?". "No, no just give me your 7 and I'm gonna go crazy with it." They said "Wow, if it works for you it's cool."
R.V.B. - So where did you guys meet up?
N.L. - We met at a club in Los Angeles called Petie's Place. I was hosting a jam session there, with some other local musicians. Lora came in with a couple of singers that she was working with, pre Nikki Lunden. We met... I was kind of busy, and didn't get to talk that much that night. We exchanged numbers, and I called her a couple of days later, and we were on the phone for a couple of hours. Lora invited me to hang out at one of her band rehearsals. So I did, and never went home after that.
R.V.B. - Right. I get a vision of straight ahead rock, with a little bit of progressive rock. I know on your website, it states that you lean towards progressive rock, but I heard pop songs and just standard rock and roll. What were your guy's influences?
N.L. - Well for me, actually being a mid-westerner, I was really big into Sheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac, more along the roots rock kind of stuff. On the rock side, some of my vocals influences, with the delays and some of the craziness would be from Janes Addiction, Radiohead for sure... Thom Yorke, I'm a huge fan.

L. G. - I'm strictly pretty simple, mine is old style like Jimmy Page, George Harrison, David Bowie, Bob Dylan.
R.V.B. - Gee, you would never know with that double-neck guitar that you have?
L.G. - I like really good singer/songwriters whether they're new or old, but I really like people who know how to put great lyrics with it. I like very stylized kind of people. N.L. - Manic Street Preachers.
L.G. - Manic street Preachers, yeah like them.
R.V.B. - When you guys first got together, did you guys start writing originals right away, or did you play a few covers also?
L.G. - We haven't really played too many covers. Nikki's band and our band both were original bands here in LA. One was the Laura G band and one was the Nikki Lunden band, so it was pretty much two original bands. We just liked each other's songs. We just started playing each other's songs. Once in a while we would play a cover, but not very often. We totally suck as a cover band. (Hahaha) If we do throw one in, we do it our own way.
R.V.B. - Well the one video I saw that didn't suck was with Dale Bozzio.
N.L. - Oh yeah, Dale Bozzio (hahaha)
L.G. - We put that together very quick with her, and it came out pretty good.
N.L. - Prescott Niles was playing bass there
L.G. - That's one of two songs we played with her
N.L. - Destination Unknown we played with Dale, Prescott and Prescott's son Gabe. Their band is coming up now too.
L.G. - We did that in Long Beach, at an outdoor festival. That's on tape also but we haven't had a chance to put it out.
R.V.B. - It looked like a beautiful place. It sounded so good. Did she ever approach you about backing her up?
L.G. - Yeah, she wants us to record with her and we love her to death. We're thinking down the road, that we'd love to have her join us on one of our songs. We have 3/4 of our next album pretty much done in terms of the material. Some of it's already recorded. There's one song in particular that we want her to join in. There is an early recorded version of it called Sex Suicide. Prescott Niles is now going to play the bass on that. He's just a world class bassist. He's gonna sing a verse on part of it with Nikki on Sex Suicide. So we do have a song for her to join with us on our next album.
N.L. - I'm actually taking some bass lessons from Prescott right now, as well.
R.V.B. - I'll put this question out to Lora. Were you always a guitar player? Was that
your first instrument?
L.G. - Yeah, pretty much. I was lucky enough to have a world class drummer as my first drummer in High School. His name is Matt Sorum and he's in Velvet Revolver now. He's been in Guns N' Roses and a bunch of other bands. He and I started together in High School, and we split later because he went harder rock and I was into the kind of the Pink Floydish', kind of droney' melodic sound. It's obvious which one picked the right course... he'd done fifty times better than I have. (Hahaha)
R.V.B. - Well, I wouldn't say that. I'm very, very, very impressed with the record. The song writing is fantastic, with powerful lyrics. I know this album has a theme to it. Did you have the idea right from the beginning? or did it come later that you were going to tie all of the songs together?
L.G. - The very first song was thematic for this album. It started with the song "Hear Me", because we're LGTB and we wanted that song to come out right away. We have it on the original Lora G. Band album - Streets of Hollywood. It's recorded more of a rock version on that. We re-did the song completely for this album. The only thing different is, it was recorded to fit the sound of Lunden Reign. We truly came up with what we felt was... if there's such a thing to as a sound to identify a band. I not sure if there's a such thing anymore as unique sound, but I think if there is such thing as an identifiable sound. We went for that. Once Luis, Geoff, Nikki, and I came up with a sound we thought was what we wanted to be the Lunden Reign sound, we went back and took some of the older songs and re-did them to fit the new sound. "Hear Me" was one of those songs. That song was about my experiences in life and what I had to go through in the LGTB community. From there, it was a matter of adding on songs that fit that. It honestly didn't come together as the full rock opera until I finished the lyrics to American Stranger. That was the song to tie everything together. I started writing that song about fifteen/twenty years ago and I never completed it. It was written about a young Vietnamese boy who came into Orange County and he was beaten to death for being Vietnamese. He was just a good kid... went to school and he died on the playground. The original thinking was , I wrote the story about him but as time evolved, I wanted to make it about everybody. I started realizing, how many of us felt like strangers in their own neighborhood, country land, family, whatever. It would end up being in your own country as well. American Stranger finally came together for this album and ironically is the oldest song lyrically of any of them. I just re-modified it to be omnipresent to the entire album.
R.V.B. - That's a very strong and very touching story. It was one of the songs I checked off that I like. I like how it finished up real strong. It seemed to gain momentum as it moved along.

L.G. - Oh thank you. I was on an interview with Martha Davis of The Motels. She was interviewing me along with Terri Nunn from Berlin... when Martha heard the song Hear Me, she started crying. She said the song hit her that hard, that much. She told me during break "I would be honored to play that on stage with you". Terri said "Oh know you don't, not over my dead body. I'm joining you and Lora". That was nice that two legends loved that song. In fact I just got off the phone with Terri Nunn yesterday. She came out and introduced me when I was playing the Roxy, which was really nice.
R.V.B. - Those are two big well known, household names.
L.G. - We're really blessed that we are getting a lot of legendary people supporting us. Mainly, it's because they like the original sound we have, the lyrics, and Nikki's voice. Those three things are hitting people real well. It's really working for us and we're really blessed that it's happening.
R.V.B. - I can almost see this concept being brought to the stage as a play.
L.G. - Thank you. We want to do it as a musical.
R.V.B. - Did you ever throw it out to anybody, or are you gonna wait to see what happens with the record?
L.G. - We're kind of in the middle of those two. My backround is in television, and when I took a little of time off from music to go make money. I went and became a television producer. I wound up working for Disney, Universal, and ABC, and I wound up winning about five Emmy's from my work. Edward R. Murrow's and a bunch of awards. I started realizing that I could put this together, but I just need to get a good director. I'm already writing the synopsis for the stage play. We have our own video production company... that's one of the things we do here. That's how we were able to put that Christmas song together so quickly.
R.V.B. - Yeah, that was really nice. I saw the other video of where Nikki was in a cave. L.G. - Everything we do is in more like the old school 60's. Songs have to have a purpose, and meaning and that song, was in dedication to U.S. soldiers fighting overseas. They're forgotten hero's, and they're still over there fighting. The Savage Line, was written about those who died in battle in 2009. We wanted to give the feeling of isolation. We've had some criticism on it, when they were saying "Why didn't you put more in that video?". We said the whole point was to show isolation. What it was like to be alone. That's how they feel over there, so that's the point of that video.
R.V.B. - I heard cello in the song.
L.G. -That was amazing, and it was done by Ana Lenchantin. We get so lucky sometimes. She's played with Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age...
N.L. - The Eels
L.G. - She's played with everybody... a world class cellist and she's on about three or four songs of ours.
R.V.B. - Nikki you play the keyboards? Did you start with the piano?
N.L. - No, actually I'm a guitarist. I've been playing the guitar since I was about nine years old. When I came to LA and I met Lora, she took away my acoustic guitar and put a wireless microphone in my hand and unleashed a monster that we had no idea, lived inside of me. I didn't know what I would do without a guitar to hide behind. I did figure it out after about ten minutes.
R.V.B. - You guys have a very professional stage presence... it's obvious. You're playing some really nice clubs. I understand you're playing the House of Blues in San Diego,
coming up?
L.G. - We've played the House of Blues many times. They keep asking us back and it's really nice. We do fewer shows, but better venues is our goal. If we do small venues, Nikki and I will just do it with acoustic guitars. If it's a small venue, we do it like a coffee shop mentality, because we like that Stephen Stills, Bob Dylan kind of thing where if your song can't be played on an acoustic guitar, it's not a song.
R.V.B. - It's a lot easier to play acoustically. You just show up with your guitars. So how was the experience playing at Abbey Road? With all the history involved.
N.L. - It was awesome. When we first started and I asked for the SM7, they kind of raised an eyebrow and went like "Oh great". It was really nice and a very clean, sterile environment. It was very nice. No craziness going on there. The engineers were very helpful once they got over the fact I was asking for an SM7. The vibes in the room were amazing. Just to be in there to play music, no less record in that room where legendary icons of music recorded there. History was made time and time again in that room. You kinda just walk in the room and get tears in your eyes.
L.G. - It was tough to play guitar in the room truthfully. I kept looking for the spot where you saw Lennon and Yoko dancing around, or George working with Clapton in there. You just look around that room and get caught up in that daze, and the next thing you realize you're recording a song... you'll be like "Ok I gotta focus".
R.V.B. - Yeah, you don't get much more sacred rock and roll ground than that.
L.G. - The day we went there, it happened to be the retirement party for one of their longest and oldest engineers. All the engineers were there from the past. We were really lucky, because it was not opened to their clients or anything else, and they invited us. They were handing out commemorative plaques of the Abbey Road album to the retiring engineer. I thought, what a moment of history this was.
N.L. - The London Philharmonic was setting up in the other room.
R.V.B. - Did you get a picture walking across the road with the white stripes?
L.G. - Of course, we did everything touristy we could do. They were hero's of ours. R.V.B. - Did anybody take their shoes off?
L.G. - No, that was one thing we didn't do.
R.V.B. - I hear it's a pretty dangerous turn.
N.L. - There's a line to get that photo. I would hate to live on that corner. We were one of ten groups that were all trying to do the same thing in the intersection.
R.V.B. - How long were you there?

L.G. - One full day in studio 2.
R.V.B. - Did you make a vacation out of it, and do some site seeing?
L.G. - We did seventeen shows in sixteen days over there. We could have done more but we just ran out of time. We played the Fringe Festival up in Edinburgh. We were supposed to play Paris but we ran out of time.
R.V.B. - Well that sounds exciting to do a tour over there. Were there any memorable moments?
N.L. - So many. Even just getting into London was quite a task. When we arrived there, we got held over. Everyone except for Laura got held over in customs. I think we spent about 36 hours in holding, while they tried to decide if we were there to try to make money or not... which we were not. I guess we just didn't say the right things. We were within moments of getting on a plane and shipped back to the United States. It was intense, and as soon as we got out of there we went to our first gig and everybody was just embracing us. When we first got there, we had just a couple of things on the calendar and by the time we left, we had to turn people down because we had so many bookings. R.V.B. - That's fantastic. Have you guys ever made it to the east coast over here to the New York area?
N.L. - No, we haven't yet
R.V.B. - Come on, what are you waiting for? We're looking forward to it.
L.G. - Cleopatra Records just brought us aboard, and we have to wait to see what we're supposed to do. We're in the process of figuring out the festival schedule for this summer. It's tricky, because the festivals are signing us now. We know we can do really well at the European festivals, but our goal is to get into the American festivals this year. We're at a catch 22 with the album coming out in March. We may do the old style RV tour across the country gradually. Just go right up 80 all the way across to Chicago through to New York and just play as many places as we can in a two month period... if we miss the festival season.
R.V.B. - Well it sounds like a good problem to have, and it sounds like you have nothing but good days ahead. Congratulations on all of your hard work. It obviously paid off on the album. Did you guys co-write any songs together? How do you get inspiration to write?
L.G. - You know it's interesting, because the way Nikki contributes is very natural. A lot of times I'll complete the lyrics, and they'll be a bridge or something... all of a sudden Nikki will just come up with something and just start singing into it. If she doesn't have the lyrics... I'll just put lyrics to it or she just does it. For example, the bridge on Mary where she just starts singing. That's not even in the original recording. She just came up with that, and put her heart and soul into it. That's what's she's so good at. She did that on American Stanger... that little bridge. I had the lyrics for it but I didn't know how it was gonna be sung. She said "What do you want?". I said "I don't know, just sing it high". That bridge made the song for me, when she put that in. That's how she contributes to the songs I write. When she writes songs like It's Time or It's About Time. My major thing is, I'm taking a little country out of it and putting a little darkness into it. I'm a darker, psychedelic, more haunting kind of writer and she's more of an upbeat...
N.L. - Roots Rockie'.
L.G. - Roots Rock kind of writer. I take her songs and make them darker. She puts vibe into some of my songs. It's a nice contribution, and both of us benefit by having a writing
partner of Luis Maldonado join us in the co-writing music portion, and coming in and producing it and having world class musicians join us. Geoff Pearlman, Ana and Morgan Young on drums.
R.V.B. - It's a very, very good piece of work. Do you headline your shows or sometimes support other acts?
L.G. - Both
R.V.B. - Anyone that you have supported that's noteworthy.
N.L.. - Well I think over the summer at the LA Pride Festival, we were on the bill with The Bangles, Jennifer Hudson, Iggy Azalea and we opened for Missing Persons. Kelly Rowland at the Long Beach Pride Festival.

R.V.B. - That's awesome. you're getting to know people and you're working your way in. It sounds like you guys have a great career ahead of you.
L.G. - Yes we do. We have a second album in the works. It's gonna be more like power ballads and kinda like Zeppeliny' ballads on steroids. Then we're gonna have some harder songs that are edgier. We're gonna have more keyboards and more synth.
R.V.B. - I thought American Stranger had an edge to it... with a little bit of progressive rock in there. I heard catchy pop also, that's radio worthy.
L.G. - Thank you. We definitely don't do a lot of instrumental stuff in our songs purposely because we want it to be more about the songs.
R.V.B. - The song Mary has a nice lead guitar solo in it.
L.G. - That's the wonderful Luis Maldonado joining me. Most times I just play rhythm. He's just a wonderful, world class guitarist. He's fantastic.
R.V.B. - He is fantastic. Well congratulations again and good luck to your upcoming season. I hope you get on major festival stages... although it does sound like fun hopping in an RV and seeing America along the way.

N.L. - I've always wanted to do that... get a little camper, but now we're a bigger band and we need something a little bigger. But to just go around the country dragging our cases around and just doing the old school thing man... Route 66.
L.G. - If we come to New York, would you introduce us at the show? We got a lot of people who like us in New York.
R.V.B. - I would absolutely love to do that. I'll keep an eye on your website and we'll keep in touch. One more question I have to ask you Nikki. In Franklin, Iowa... did you know every single person in the town?
N.L. - Just about. There's a few people that I don't know now because I've been away there for so long, but there were about 140 people there.
R.V.B. - Out of those 140 people, how many were musicians.
N.L. - Probably many. A lot of fiddle players and banjo players.
R.V.B. - It must have been quite a difference moving to the west coast.
N.L. - Oh yeah. It's a little different than the shindig we have in the town square. My father owns Franklin Tap which is the only business in the town. Across from there, is Franklin park with a gazebo with an old timey' red, white and blue banner that goes around it. We have our little shindig every 4th of July in the summertime with a fish fry, barbeque chicken, and everybody brings a pot luck dish. There's kids running around with no shoes. I mean it's real.
R.V.B. - It sounds like small town America at it's best.
N.L. - That's the exact definition of it.
R.V.B. - Alright ladies, thank you very much for taking this time. I enjoyed it.

Lunden Reign formed in the summer of 2013 following a tour of the UK by the Lora G & Nikki Lunden Band (Lora G now spelled Laura Espinoza-Lunden). Since then the prolific songwriting duo, along with their producer & song co-writer, Luis Maldonado (lead guitarist for TRAIN) released their critically acclaimed debut "big beat, alt rock album "American Stranger" in 2015. “AMERICAN STRANGER” received multiple music magazines’ “TOP 10-BEST OF” Lists for 2015.

My Review of “Red Wagon (Can’t Return to Yesterday)” by Lunden Reign reads as follow … It is by far the best song and music video to date by one of the finest bands to arrive on the rock music scene since the 90s. Nikki & Laura Lunden are a seductive badass duo liberating rock to its glory days. Laura’s proficient songwriting and masterful electric licks are driven by Nikki’s amazing vocals and intensity. The girls acquired a similar musical brilliance and tenacity as legends … Heart, Joan Jett, The Bangles, The Go Go’s and Letters to Cleo. And if “Red Wagon (Can’t Return to Yesterday)” is an indication of even better things to come, than their new album to be released at the end of this year entitled "Confessions" should be epic! Nikki & Laura are the core members of Lunden Reign along with Producer & co-writer Luis Maldonado. “Red Wagon (Can't Return To Yesterday)”

 Los Angeles - Lunden Reign's recent CrueFest concert at the world famous Whisky A Go-Go in West Hollywood proved to be yet another powerhouse show. While sharing the stage with heavy hitters L.A. Story, Westfield Massacre and Blacklist Union, Nikki & Laura along with bassist Matt Denis, Julian Tomarin (guitar) and Matt Lucich (drums) brought that unmistakable Lunden Reign vibe to the Whisky and the packed house it entertained. 


Their set rocked out with​ 4 brand new songs set to release on their ​upcoming album including the title track “Confessions” and “Red Wagon”. Nikki wooed those packed tight up to the stage with “Stardust Daze” and topped it off with the edgy and environmentally charged “Fate of the World”, bringing tears to the eyes of several fans.

 Their just released first single and video “Red Wagon (Can't Return To Yesterday)” is the first of 10 songs from “Confessions”. Both the song and video have been submitted and accepted for Grammy consideration in “BEST VIDEO” and “BEST NEW SINGLE” categories. 

 Says Nikki, “I'm really thrilled about this next record. "Red Wagon" is a powerhouse, and a couple of the other songs hit me super hard which makes them easy to perform emotionally. I hope that what we did at the Whisky recently will transcend into the studio - performances like that are what I hope to share with our fans. Nikki Lunden (lead singer, guitar, and composer) & Laura Espinoza-Lunden (composer, guitarist, and keyboards) came together to form L.A. based Lunden Reign in mid-2013. Shortly after, they teamed with platinum-selling producer Luis Maldonado for their now critically-acclaimed debut album, 'American Stranger.'
