Meet D’andre Woolridge of DJ That Kid Dre in North Dallas

LOCAL STORIES

Today we’d like to introduce you to D’andre Woolridge.

D’andre, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I was exposed to a lot of different music by my mother and father my father spent a lot of time listening to P funk rock and roll bands like Lincoln Park And so on and so forth.

By the time I was in middle school, I was eager to get into music so I joined the band I was quickly thrown into the percussion section which I was happy about.

I spent two years in-band competing in UIL competitions.

Once I made it to high school, I was no longer interested in music. I started playing sports but for some reason, I couldn’t get away from music. In my 10th grade year, I ended up in a production called media technology.

There the spark was reborn, I learned how to do things like recording myself and edit.

Before you know it, me and my friends are spending a lot of time in the editing rooms throwing beats on the iMac, rapping at the little microphone on the screen.

That spark quickly turned into a wildfire by the time I graduated, I had gotten deeply into music writing my own lyrics.

Five years after graduation, I feel like my music was going nowhere. I was writing and rapping but I was not releasing any music. Nor was I feeling the music that I was riding or the beats I was writing to.

I needed more inspiration so, in 2015, I was invited to Vans Warped Tour.

I met acts like BeBe Rexha, Metro station, and Pierce The Veil. Mostly, all rock acts with crazy ridiculous crowds. The inspiration I needed was there watching them perform and the stage presence put me in a mindset that I couldn’t control.

I need that energy, I wanted it before long, I was producing my own tracks I was studying and trying to figure out how could release my music on Pandora, Spotify so I can release it to the world, I was serious about my music by then.

Finally, I got my 1st big gig a South by Southwest opening for rap artist Cory Gunz from young money. Great experience for me but I realize quickly rapping wasn’t for me with a not so great performance Producing became my 1st love.

Becoming heavy in producing I started to lean back into the music and genre that I had seen at warped tour. Feeling like I need something different I discover a genre called EDM (electronic dance music).

Listening to EDM, I realized a lot of the sounds I’m hearing are sounds from my past.

The deep house the Tech-house sounds all incorporated with the sounds that I heard growing up P funk hip hop, trap pop rock and roll. It all felt right to me, so I dived in.

With my Girlgfriend’s support, she suggested that I go back to school for production so I did. I attended Media Tech Institute Dallas and I met some of the most talented people I’ve ever meet in my life and at the same time, gained some of the greatest skills I could ever have in my life.

After graduating, I’ve set my mind on taking over Dallas 1st, then after that, the United States, then next, the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This is not been an easy road, I’ve dealt with losses.

– financial pain
