"New Artist Blythe Dennis Brings Real R&B and Soul Back To Your Playlists"

Some artists are born with excellent rhythm and others are great with the pen, but Blythe Dennis does it all and was born to be a musical star!

“I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember,” said Blythe. “I used to sing along to almost every song on the radio.” “When I sing I get a sense of relief,” she said.
The artist says she loves to write, sing and perform because it helps her visualize her thoughts.

Blythe’s first solo was “If It HadNot Been for the Lord on My Side” that she sang with her church’s children’s choir. She said people were in shock because nobody knew she could sing!

The upcoming singer has the outstanding ability to write her own lyrics, but would love to work with professional songwriters and composers in the future.

She started off as a poet that gave her a creative style of writing that makes people think and connect with their inner emotion.

“I write about whatever I’m feeling at the time or what’s on my mind,” she said. “I write about topics that interest me.” “I just want people to be touched by words, to light a flame in people and to be moved by my art,” she explained.

Blythe believes that her tone and delivery is what separates her from any other artist in the industry right now. She may sound similar to another artist but she tends to fuse multiple genres together to create a unique sound.

Some of her favorite artists are Jill Scott, Jazmine Sullivan, Marvin Gaye, and Ella Fitzgerald, too name a few. Blythe says all of these artists are great but Marvin Gaye is such a true artist. He touches people even to this day. That’s an impact she would like to leave even when she’s gone. Blythe said if she could collaborate and perform with any artist it would have to be Jay-Z.

Initially, Blythe was super nervous and self conscious about performing in front of large crowds.

“It’s a hard thing to get up in front of people and be vulnerable,” she said. “But I’m at the point now where I have a quiet confidence. I know what I bring as a performer and I show that freely, it’s very liberating.”

Blythe made the life-changing decision to pursue music in 2012. She graduated from Grambling State University and then headed to Dallas, TX to attend graduate school at Texas Women’s University.

At Grambling, Blythe was a member of different choirs including Entourage, Strong Tower Gospel Chorale, and Lyrical Quest. After she graduated, she continued practicing her craft and joined a group called New Balance which consisted of Grambling students.

“I attended TWU for one semester and each day in class, I felt like I was making the biggest mistake of my life,”she said. “My heart was, and has always been in music, and I knew that there was nothing else that I wanted to do.”

Blythe then told her parents that she didn’t want to attend college any longer that she just wanted to focus on her dream and that was to become a successful music artist. She was proud that her family was in agreement with her decision and wanted to support her all the way to the top!

Her maternal grandmother was said to have an amazing voice. Blythe never got to meet her but her mother tells her how beautiful her voice was all the time. Her dad, uncle and cousins also have the gift to sing as well.

Blythe mentioned that music makes her feel the way she does because music is the universal language.

“The way that a song can elicit such emotion is so powerful,” she said. “No matter how you may feel at any time of day, you can always find a song that relates to what you’re going through. That’s what I love about music. I can never get enough of it.”

The Grambling native said if she could talk to any upcoming artist she would tell them to do what makes THEM happy because, ultimately, they are the ones who have to live with the regret of not following their dreams. - Evonne Gipson

"Grambling artists drop new mixtapes"

Grambling alumna Blythe Dennis flooded students' social media timelines when she dropped her first mixtape titled, "Covers: Vol. 1," on Feb. 14.
The 11-track mixtape is composed of Blythe's favorite artists that she transformed into her own taste of jazz and soul.
When you first press play, the chances of you pressing "next" are slim to none because the sound of her voice is smooth, calming and original. Blythe's style of singing is similar to John Legend as she flows through each track singing a melody with precision. - Diana Sepulveda

Bio

Early Life and Education] A native of Grambling, Louisiana and the youngest of three, Blythe Dennis was born on June 30, 1988 to Albert and Sarah Dennis. Both, Albert and Sarah Dennis worked on the campus of Grambling State University, where Blythe received her Bachelor of Science degree in Leisure Studies in 2011. Shortly thereafter, she attended Texas Women’s University for a semester to purse a dual Master’s degree in Health System’s Management and Business Administration; however, Blythe decided to follow her dream of becoming a neo-soul artist instead. [Inspiration/Influences] While attending Ruston High School and GSU, Blythe participated in a number of choirs, one being the New Balance Band. She also took part in the Lyrical Quest Performing Arts Group where she refined her talents. Blythe has no particular sound when listening to or performing music, in fact, she likes to draw from different genres. Some of her key influences in music are Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Marvin Gaye, Isley Brothers, Billie Holiday, Maroon 5, and John Mayer. She considers the music that she composes to be more of a melodic tone, such as soul. [Past and Future Projects] On February 14, 2013, just in time for Valentine’s Day, Blythe released her first mix tape, Covers: Volume 1, via datpiff.com. The mix tape featured songs from some of the artists who inspire her. In March of 2014, Blythe released her second mixtape entitled, Many Are Called. This album focuses on all that she has encountered in regards to finding who she wanted to be and trying to find her purpose. Currently, she is working on her third studio project entitled The Heartbreak EP which she plans to release during the first quarter of 2016.
