Blythe Dennis

Some artists are born with excellent rhythm and others are great with the pen, but Blythe Dennis does it all and was born to be a musical star!

“I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember,” said Blythe. “I used to sing along to almost every song on the radio.” “When I sing I get a sense of relief,” she said.
The artist says she loves to write, sing and perform because it helps her visualize her thoughts.

Blythe’s first solo was “If It HadNot Been for the Lord on My Side” that she sang with her church’s children’s choir. She said people were in shock because nobody knew she could sing!

The upcoming singer has the outstanding ability to write her own lyrics, but would love to work with professional songwriters and composers in the future.

She started off as a poet that gave her a creative style of writing that makes people think and connect with their inner emotion.

“I write about whatever I’m feeling at the time or what’s on my mind,” she said. “I write about topics that interest me.” “I just want people to be touched by words, to light a flame in people and to be moved by my art,” she explained.

Blythe believes that her tone and delivery is what separates her from any other artist in the industry right now. She may sound similar to another artist but she tends to fuse multiple genres together to create a unique sound.

Some of her favorite artists are Jill Scott, Jazmine Sullivan, Marvin Gaye, and Ella Fitzgerald, too name a few. Blythe says all of these artists are great but Marvin Gaye is such a true artist. He touches people even to this day. That’s an impact she would like to leave even when she’s gone. Blythe said if she could collaborate and perform with any artist it would have to be Jay-Z.

Initially, Blythe was super nervous and self conscious about performing in front of large crowds.

“It’s a hard thing to get up in front of people and be vulnerable,” she said. “But I’m at the point now where I have a quiet confidence. I know what I bring as a performer and I show that freely, it’s very liberating.”


Blythe made the life-changing decision to pursue music in 2012. She graduated from Grambling State University and then headed to Dallas, TX to attend graduate school at Texas Women’s University.

At Grambling, Blythe was a member of different choirs including Entourage, Strong Tower Gospel Chorale, and Lyrical Quest. After she graduated, she continued practicing her craft and joined a group called New Balance which consisted of Grambling students.

“I attended TWU for one semester and each day in class, I felt like I was making the biggest mistake of my life,”she said. “My heart was, and has always been in music, and I knew that there was nothing else that I wanted to do.”

Blythe then told her parents that she didn’t want to attend college any longer that she just wanted to focus on her dream and that was to become a successful music artist. She was proud that her family was in agreement with her decision and wanted to support her all the way to the top!

Her maternal grandmother was said to have an amazing voice. Blythe never got to meet her but her mother tells her how beautiful her voice was all the time. Her dad, uncle and cousins also have the gift to sing as well.


Blythe mentioned that music makes her feel the way she does because music is the universal language.

“The way that a song can elicit such emotion is so powerful,” she said. “No matter how you may feel at any time of day, you can always find a song that relates to what you’re going through. That’s what I love about music. I can never get enough of it.”

The Grambling native said if she could talk to any upcoming artist she would tell them to do what makes THEM happy because, ultimately, they are the ones who have to live with the regret of not following their dreams. - Evonne Gipson

Blythe Dennis is a soulful singer/songwriter based in Dallas, TX. The Louisiana native and GSU alum has performed in music venues and at music events in both states. Her musical influences include Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Marvin Gaye and Billie Holiday. Blythe has a few acting roles under her belt, but this will be her first film role. Grambling alumna Blythe Dennis flooded students' social media timelines when she dropped her first mixtape titled, "Covers: Vol. 1," on Feb. 14.
The 11-track mixtape is composed of Blythe's favorite artists that she transformed into her own taste of jazz and soul.
