Bree And The Whatevers

Brooklyn based Bree And The Whatevers is a project spawned from the songwriting and musical vision of powerhouse chanteuse Bree Klauser. The core of this collaboration is Bree and her Brother Matthew Klauser. Along with their jazzy pop blue rock-sish vibes, Bree and The Whatevers strive provide a very cathartic entertainment experience. "At the Make Music New York festival we played an outdoor show in Brooklyn across the street for the wildly eccentric Toys And Tiny Instruments. Instead of competing for the audiences’ attention we ignited a spontaneous round robin ending in a joint performance of The Doors cover “Alabama Song”. We had over 50 people cheering and dancing on a tiny street in Brooklyn. It was fantastic celebration of spontaneous musical collaboration."



popVLTR: You've been making moves in New York, how'd you get into music? Bree: I’ve been singing since I was very young. I grew up doing theatre, and eventually fell in love with Jazz. When I was 18 worked with a producer on a small independent pop project, and got my first taste of recording and songwriting. A year later I began to write my own material with a collaborator, and we would perform these songs at a regular restaurant gig, and a few other clubs around the city. Eventually that spawned into me and various rotations of musicians performing mostly original material. I self produced my solo EP last year, and a couple of those rotating musicians, such as my brother Matthew Klauser stuck around, thus birthing Bree And The Whatevers.

popVLTR: Congrats on 'My Cocaine', who are some of your influence? Bree: The music it’s self has been described as the lovechild of Amy Winehouse and The Doors, but I think the Amy sound comes from the influence of my idol , the late great Dinah Washington. I love all the great jazz singers such as her and Ella Fitzgerald. My earliest influence as a front woman was Gwen Stefani. I learned from seeing her when I was 10 years old that women can be wild onstage and didn’t have to be cute, polite, and apologetic. Current artist who inspire me: St Vincent, Lady Gaga, and a local group from my neighborhood, Pearl and The Beard.

popVLTR: What are some of your proudest moments in music? Bree: We had two of our most exhilarating performance experiences this past summer. At the Make Music New York festival we played an outdoor show in Brooklyn across the street for the wildly eccentric Toys And Tiny Instruments. Instead of competing for the audiences’ attention we ignited a spontaneous round robin ending in a joint performance of The Doors cover “Alabama Song”. We had over 50 people cheering and dancing on a tiny street in Brooklyn. It was fantastic celebration of spontaneous musical collaboration. Our other great accomplishment this summer was getting to play the legendary rock club The Bitter End. We headlined our own show for my 21st birthday and packed out the house! I loved being on the panoramic stage with the audience so close at hand, while being backed up by 5 incredibly talented musicians, whom which were all on fire that night. The energy of that show was absolutely kinetic bouncing back and forth from the audience to the band. Definatly one of our proudest moments to date.

popVLTR: What cool stuff is on the horizon for Bree And The Whatevers? Bree: We just played CMJ music marathon for the first time at The Paper Box October 19th. During CMJ we released a our live EP with select tracks from our show at The Bitter End, along with a bonus studio track. It’s available NOW on Bandamp and spotify. (www.breeandthewhatevers.bandcamp.com) This winter we will be going into the studio with Grammy award winning producer Denise Barbarita to work our next EP,which will include a remake of My Cocaine (with the current line up of band members) and numerous other tracks have until now, only existed in a live show context. We are launching our first ever Indie Gogo campaign in hopes to raise funds for this endeavor and be able to quickly and swiftly get more music out to our fans.

Bree Klauser of Bree and the Whatevers melds together a few of our favorite things: amazing music, true talent, determination, and humor.

As it's stated on their facebook fan page, Bree is, "The musical love child of Amy Winehouse and The Doors." Bree and the Whatevers have a certain enthusiasm and excitement that a lot of indie acts lack. So often you'll find promising talent in a band, but it's weighed down with, "woe are we to be indie, to be broke, and to have to make our own fans instead of the radio doing it for us." - Parachuting Buddha

One of the problems I have with jazz and blues singers of old is that they don't rock the Trash Bar in Williamsburg. So we happily settled for an attractive blues/jazz/pop chanteuse, Bree Klauser, who playfully delivered lively melodies with a skilled combo of guitar/bass/drums/keys. We heard some nice bluesy guitar on My Cocaine (by another Klauser), jazzy drums on The Strain, rolling piano on Come My Way, and keyboards sounding a world music string/piano interplay on Isolde. Bree even unveiled a Christmas original that could go toe-to-toe with [read: break the monotony of] dusty standards on heavy mall rotation. Bree has a wonderful voice that can go anywhere and do anything. Her breathy instrument dances flirtatiously on jazz/blues-tinged pop songs you'll be adding to your iPod in time for Christmas shopping. - NYC Live Music
