When you think of the DMV, automatically go-go music pops in your head. You know, the bouncy dance pulse that’s rooted so deep into the culture of DC that rappers artists like Wale and GoldLink couldn’t help themselves when it came to incorporating it into their music. When it comes to DMV native Bria Zhanae, she took the soul route and it landed her into making love filled music that you can also slow grind to. Bria Zhanae is fine being a loner. Lost In Love is a truly beautiful project by upcoming R&B gem, Bria Zhanae, which I feel will speak to many people as loudly as it spoke to me upon first listening. This three-track EP features relaxing instrumentation and lyrics which will have your thoughts on full-blast at the emotions presented. She describes the project as a woman’s perspective coming out of a codependent relationship. She says “The project expresses that we sometimes have to let go in order to take that journey within, which is the most important journey that we take. In order to really know love we must know and love ourselves!” The Frolic is all about re-observing and overcoming our most heart-grabbing experiences, through expression and art. There is something to be said about an artist who kicks their shoes off their feet on stage, and settles into comfort. They are rooting themselves in their new home; and in doing so, you feel at home too. It’s exactly the approach that 20 year old Neo-Soul/ Hip -Hop fusion artist, Bria Zhanae, delivers to her audience. Setting such a tone is second nature to the Baltimore, Maryland native, who has been performing and playing musical instruments since high school. Determined to further her career, Bria released her first mixtape entitled, ALEXITHYMIA, while attending Full Sail University.
Bria’s artist persona is laid back and cool; but her music is nothing short of raw and real. She has combined the perfect amount of 90’s style hip-hop with soulful vocal melodies. With inspirations like Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper and Jhene Aiko her potential for greatness is evitable. On her current project, “Into the Void”, the songstress comes across as a close friend, divulging a realist take on life issues in songs like “Hashtag Choosin” and “MMTWGR” (Money Makes The World Go ‘Round). The four- track E.P. is intended to be an honest account of personal experiences used to challenge, opening up not only her heart but the hearts of others.
“Everything that I write in my music is nothing but truth. I don’t make up anything... I don’t really like doing things that are outside of me.” The Hip-Hop meets Neo-Soul vocalist and songwriter continues to tell her story through multi-media platforms. In addition to the release of “Into the Void”, Bria is currently working on music videos to complete her creative vision.
