Larimer Lounge, in Denver, was the place to be last Thursday night. That's where local mover-and-shaker DJ Low Key curated a Red Bull Sound Select show that began with exceptional sets by Denver's own Fast4ward and CRL CRRLL.

Up next was Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals. And Paak, Los Angeles singer and drummer, has collaborated in the past with the night's headliner: TOKiMONSTA, the stage name of LA DJ, producer and Red Bull Music Academy alum Jennifer Lee.
In addition to Paak, TOKi has worked with Kool Keith and MNDR, played some big festivals including Coachella and Electric Zoo, and her most recent album was last year's "Desiderium." A couple months back, my group, The FAMM (www.focusonthefamm.com) and I were in Austin, Tx for SxSW 2015!! And although we were hyped to be invited to perform at our first showcase, we were completely unaware of the talent we would come across from our own back yard.

We were booked by SpokesBuzz out of Fort Collins, CO to perform at a Colorado Showcase, however I had never heard of any of the other artists performing so I was eager to hear some new ish. As we’re getting ready to perform we stood and watched the act right before us and as usual we were front and center to show respect and to listen. What we heard was not only unexpected but soulful, modern and refreshing!

If you have never heard the name CRL CRRLL (www.crlcrrll.com) before you would be doing yourself an injustice by not looking him up immediately. Best described as soulful RnB with a modern wavy almost trap twist. He performed multiple tracks and played live beats but it wasn’t until i heard a song called 2 am that I instantly said “damn that boy killin shit!”

We got a chance to meet Mr. CRL CRRLL after his set and talked with him a bit, only to find out what a piece of shit he really was. Just kidding of course. He is as down to earth and humble as you could ask for. We chopped it up for a minute, congratulated him on a great set and for the excitingly refreshingly new sound. We copped a couple cds and hopped on stage with even more excitement than before.

Most of us in Colorado, at least Denver I’ve found, are not from here. We are transplants and as such, we bring a lot of outside influence to the city and state. You would be shocked and delighted to see what Colorado has in store for the world in the coming years!

Mister Freedom: What is the concept behind the new EP?

CRL CRRLL: Concept behind the new EP is wavy live basement cuts. Instrumental drivin with just enough distortion and Lofi grit to make it feel like you just popped in a cassette tape and your driving down ocean drive with the top down.

Mister Freedom: What pushed you to make two eps rather than one?

CRL CRRLL: I had allot of influential things happen in my life the past two years and I wanted to create two different types of feeling one def had a more electro r&b feel and the other had that analogy organic feel. Almost like two different short films with similar direction. Plus I wanted to spread out on my creativity music and art.

Mister Freedom: You've made some big moves in the past year and a half, what's next for CRL CRRLL?

CRL CRRLL: Next is prob some projects with some pretty notable artists in not a name dropper, so we'll just let that ride out and you'll have to see. Also, getting out of the U.S. a little this next year to explore the world of music.

What was the first music you remember using your own money to buy?
My own money I believe was a Micheal Jackson album but you know I don't think it was a full album now that I think of it and it was a cassette tape… First album I remember enjoying and listening to over and over was Dr Dre's The Chronic.

What has been your favorite album of 2013 so far?
So far I couldn't say... Portugal the man album was pretty good and yessus was a little different still have another half year to go…

Do you have any advice for new bands?
Rock the fCK out where every you play and make sure you're enjoying it or what's the point.

Have you planned out who you want to see at UMS this year? Who are some of your highlights?
I kind of just show up and bounce around sometimes its better you catch acts you haven't heard that kill it.

If you've been to UMS before, what three words would you use to describe it?
Holy! FCking! Shit!

What has been your most memorable experience at UMS to date?
The centennial’s house party and the artist lounge getting completely smashed! The Nationals came one year and killed it i'll always remember that one.

Any tips you'd like to give the novices for making the UMS experience even better?
Enjoy all the acts you can and tell everyone you know about it. Festivals like his are diamonds in the rough.

Is there any place you're looking forward to eating during UMS?
I’ll prob stop in Sputnik for a grilled cheese it's too bad el diablos is closed down!

What is your favorite shop on South Broadway?
Speakeasy is cool but there's an antique shop across the street that has done pretty cool Ish.

Who is your all time favorite Colorado band?
My all time fave Colorado band... Earth Wind and Fire…?…… I don't know really I'd prob say the Epilogues, The Photo Atlas, Take To The Oars we had some good times with those guys that’s our fam.

You're working the counter at Twist & Shout, and a customer is interested in expanding his music collection. What three albums would you recommend?
Cinematic because that album has so many good records on it.
What ever I put out in the next few months because it's me..!lol
And something random and local because there is a lot of good music coming out of this city right now!

Is there anything we forgot to ask you about the UMS that you think people need to know?
I think everyone should take an alley walk during the UMS take a nap on an abandon
couch and drink a warm beer.

Carl Carrell is like nothing Colorado has ever seen. Any one aspect of his style is enough to impress, but he’s a multifaceted performer with more flavor in his stubble than most have in their whole career. He’s a name many in the industry have been working with or at least hearing for years, but he busted the door in this summer, and nonchalantly grabbed the spotlight for himself. Whether it’s his production, his unforgettable live shows, his pitch-perfect voice, or his impossibly charming smile…something is gonna win you over. Quite simply, he’s the best Colorado has to offer. Carl sat down with us for an in-depth analysis of everything he does as an artist and a performer. His upcoming solo project will be under the name CRL CRRLL, click the link to find out more.
CarlCarrel2Can you give us a run-down of what you’re doing behind the screen when you perform?
Yeah I use Ableton live. I use it more for triggering live aspects and the effects and stuff. It depends too on what I’m doin’. If I’m doing a track where I’m singing over it and I’m triggering production over it, then I’ll track out the production into keys, drums, bass, things like that. And then I’ll trigger them and bring different stuff in and out, and then I’ll add different effects over certain tracks, just to give it more of a live element. And it’s fun that way too because a lot of it’s on the fly and in the moment. I like cutting certain things in and out and stuff like that. That way when you listen to the record, you know [the performance] was live- it’s just a whole different vibe.
Is it typically completely organic or is some of it rehearsed?
Don’t get me wrong, I rehearse [laughs], which I think you should rehearse if you’re giving people a show. But I’ll have a set list and I’ll have the tracks I’m gonna go with, but depending on like a reaction from an audience, I might switch it up. I might do a production set here, or might add something new, or might add a twist onto a song, cut something out and bring a whole new beat in, cut out the drums and bring in a different drum pattern over the top or something. I just switch it up, you know, because the band thing is really what made me get into more live production. When you’re playing with the band it’s all kind of on the fly. Yeah you have the set list and you rehearse, but you don’t know what’s gonna come out of you especially when you’re playing live. I want that same kind of feeling in my performance. I’ll have full production sets- I have yet to do a one, but I have production sets that I’m gonna start doing where it’s all live, just building the production live and sampling and stuff like that. Just bringing that studio element out so people can see it. Because people don’t always get to see that kind of stuff and it’s really creative and entertaining to watch.
What about the visuals you use? They change with the music flawlessly- that can’t be pre-programmed…
Almost all of it is on the fly. I’m controlling it through the same controls. So I’ll set up two whole top 16 pads of just visuals, and then I’ll have 5 or 6 different visual effects that I’ll throw on each video. So I’ll pick a song and I’ll pick the right visual to that song and then I’ll throw an effect over it. And then maybe towards the middle or end of it I’ll wanna use a different visual, like it gets faster, so I’ll launch a different visual clip for that. That’s all on the fly too. I just think it’s more fun that way because every time it switches up it gives it a whole new breathe. You hear certain parts of the beats when the visuals are going faster or slower, and depending on what it is. It’s just a different take on what I do.

How do you create those images?
Well I do graphic design stuff too so I’ll take a picture or a photo and then I’ll edit it, or I’ll take a graphic from something, like a video clip from a movie, and then I’ll edit it, I’ll take it in final cut and then I’ll edit it to where I want to see it. So like for this 2am track I made a promo for, it’s basically from a commercial from the ‘90s and it’s this really sexy commercial, so I took those clips and I imposed them on themselves and messed with a lot of different filters and just made what I wanted out of it. And that’s what I do with a lot of my visuals. I just make it something that the song will represent. I know we’re gonna start filming some stuff for a lot of my visuals. So we’ll have a lot more originality to it. Even though those other tracks aren’t really mine, they have originality because they’re edited the way they are and the way the vibe is.

How did the presentation of your live shows manifest? Seems like a lot of thought would have had to go into the visual and sonic manipulations as well as the silk screens.
Originally I didn’t wanna do a screen in front of me, just a screen behind. And I wanted to do LC - Hip Hop Roll Call

After hosting Adore Tuesdays at the Living Room for nine months, former Backbeat scribe Ru Black is launching a new Tuesday-night soul series tonight at Epernay Lounge, 1080 14th Street, in the Theatre District. Dubbed the Blueprint, the series is set to kick off this evening with singer, songwriter and producer CRL CRRLL. Black says the series will not only focus on soul, but will also spotlight different experimental live-music styles.



Performers in the coming weeks include Jen Korte and friends on Tuesday, August 20, and LadySpeech on Tuesday, August 27. On Tuesday, September 17, an Amy Winehouse tribute is scheduled featuring Isis Speaks, Mandy Yoches and more. Karma Leigh will be making the move as well and will be on hand creating live paintings. In advance of tonight's show, we caught up with CRL CRRLL (aka Carl Carrell) for a quick chat.

Westword: Can you give me a rundown on what it is you do?

CRL CRRLL: I'm a musician, and I've been playing in a band for a little while, and I'm also a producer. I produce a lot of R&B and hip-hop stuff, but I also do some electronic stuff, and I've been dabbling in some different genres.

Have you been working with local artists, or national as well?

Some local, some national stuff. I've worked with a lot of local artists, but I just started venturing out in the last two years more on national acts, just kind of dabbling on production and a little bit of writing and stuff. But, yeah, I'm from here, born and raised. Went to school out here. Grew up on the west side of town, but I kind of bounced back and forth between the west side of town and the east side growing up.

How long have you been involved in music?

Well, involved seriously in music, probably the last, I would say, six or seven years. Before that, I was really into sports. I played basketball throughout high school and tried to play a little bit in college. I kind of got more into music and then started getting more into the music scene.

You said you're also in a band?

Yeah, I'm still in a band called the Ever. We're an indie-rock band. That project and my solo project are like two different worlds. That's how I met a lot people that I know, playing in that band. We travel a little bit and play out and about, mostly around Colorado.

How does the Ever differ from your solo project?

My solo stuff is more neo-soul, more electronica-sounding. The band stuff is more Portugal.The Man meets the Black Keys type of music. So less electronic and more rock style.

What do you have in store for your show at the Blueprint?

I have a projector that I project different images on to bring out more of the emotions of the songs that I produce. All the images and different things change. Catching Up with CRL CRRLL

We had a chance to chat with our good friend Crl Crll just in time before his Red Bull Sound Select performance this coming Saturday. Fresh off a performance at this years Westword Music Showcase, we had a chance to talk about his current and future projects.

Ultra5280: Tell us your name and where you are from?

Crl Crrll: Man you know me dude..! Next time you ask me some simple shit like that I'm gonna jump through the internet and barbecue slap somebody! No but seriously my name is Carl Carrell I go by CRL CRRLL which is my name no vowels! Everyone spells it wrong all the time. you can just call me CC to make it easier on you. I'm from Denver grew up in the west side.

Ultra5280: You just celebrated one year as a solo artist, what have been some of the biggest obstacles and how different is it than playing in a band?

Crl Crrll: It's been a good year for me as an artists stepping in front of the mic and stage lights but I've always been producing and writing. It's different from my band project because there's no one to blame things on except for myself and alcohol. I've enjoyed being able to do things like travel and play out alot more. The main obstacle for me is not getting caught up in the party and grinding out my visions in the lab, I had a hard time doing that this past year because of all the tracks I was sitting on. Also coming up with new sets for every show and just changing up what I do to be a little different as well that can be an I stifle in itself but never stops me from getting it done.

Ultra5280: What inspires you to write music? Do you build a song around a beat or do you build a beat around a song?

Crl Crrll: My inspiration draws from many things, some of my songs can be real personal. One thing I do is sit down with a movie running in the background and experiment and play with sounds, I've started a lot of projects that way.

Ultra5280: As an up and coming artist what kind of advice would you give to somebody just starting out?

Crl Crrll: Try things, experiment, test your boundaries when it comes to music don't ever lose that fire and curiosity that pushes you to create. I think we all want to do something special in our lives and as long as we have that feeling inside you'll do it.

Ultra5280: We are midway through 2014, what else is in store for CRL CRRLL?

Crl Crrll: I've got a ton of singles that I'm wrapping up now that will be releasing this year as well as gear that I'm pretty excited about. Some great shows like this Redbull Sound Select Saturday the 28th at Larimer Lounge, Young & Sick tour support at Lost Lake July 14th and Higher Grounds Music Festival this August. A few dates all around Denver and some dates outside the city as well.

Ultra5280: You had a chance to partake in your first SXSW this year, what was that like and would you return if given the opportunity?

Crl Crrll: My SXSW experience was ridiculous in a good way! I had the chance to rock the stage with some greats my first go round, as well as crash a pretty dope house party. Next year I'm going even harder, so best believe I'll be back Austin!

Ultra5280: How would you describe your genre, I've heard electro, soul, hip hop….?

Crl Crrll: Man I get this question all the time I like to dance and I love rhythmic shit so my genres tend to definitely jump around which I feel most music today does. There's just so much great classic music out to learn from but I'd have to say electro/soul/house/trap are the main genres I bounce between.

Ultra5280: What’s the craziest thing you have seen besides me rapping with the mic off at any of your shows?

Crl Crrll: Man it don't get no crazier than that this year my man, nothing that I could put on record without incriminating anyone! Hahaha you straight up got on stage with a turned off mic and sang the shit out of my song but you know what man I love you for that one, haha never gonna live that down!

CRL CRRLL interviews F.Lawless & Neon Brown (aka the duo known as Mister Freedom)

CRL CRRLL: What is Mister Freedom?

F.Lawless: "Mister Freedom" is a duo, and it is a concept/montage album. Mister Freedom is a glimpse into the mind of an American. Mister Freedom is observant, Mister Freedom has a stance on politics and its indiscretions, Mister Freedom is righteous, and ignorant at the same time. Mister Freedom is emotional, and emotionless at the same time. Mister Freedom lives in blissful ignorance at times, and is also completely aware of his surrounding and situations in others. I feel like mister freedom embodies a lot of american sensibilities.

Neon Brown: Mister Freedom is collaboration between MC FL and Producer Neon Brown. It is the concept of freedom in a world that is locked up by oppression, trends, and arrogance.

CRL CRRLL: I thought when I first heard the concept it was the name of an artist?

F.Lawless: We kind of wanted it to come off that way haha. We wanted you to question the album, who, and what Mister Freedom is as a whole.

CRL CRRLL: What's your favorite track on the album?

Neon Brown: My favorite track on the record would have to be Mister Freedom ft. CRL CRRLL. That is one creepy, smooth tune.

F.Lawless: Personally, Suites for smalls is my favorite. It is a very layered, complex record, and has alot of feelings embedded in it.

CRL CRRLL: I would compare this collaboration similar to a early Outkast one where one of you guys is kinda out there and one of you guys is like the rap genius what would you say your biggest influence has been?

Neon Brown: I love that comparison, FL has definitely been influenced by a lot of Outkast lately and I am a huge fan. At the time of creating the MF instrumentals I was listening to Frank Zappa “Were Only In It For The Money” and Johnny Greenwood’s “The Master’ soundtrack.

F.Lawless: For me Gangstarr, Run the Jewels, Madlib, Dilla, Cannibal Ox and Company Flow. It has a classic hip hop feel to it, but at the same time it blends genre's at times and becomes something different. Neon and I were toying with the idea of calling the Genre "Future Nostalgia"

CRL CRRLL: If your last meal was tomorrow what would it be??

Mister Freedom: What is the concept behind the new EP?

CRL CRRLL: Concept behind the new EP is wavy live basement cuts. Instrumental drivin with just enough distortion and Lofi grit to make it feel like you just popped in a cassette tape and your driving down ocean drive with the top down.

Mister Freedom: What pushed you to make two eps rather than one?

CRL CRRLL: I had allot of influential things happen in my life the past two years and I wanted to create two different types of feeling one def had a more electro r&b feel and the other had that analogy organic feel. Almost like two different short films with similar direction. Plus I wanted to spread out on my creativity music and art.

Mister Freedom: You've made some big moves in the past year and a half, what's next for CRL CRRLL?

CRL CRRLL: Next is prob some projects with some pretty notable artists in not a name dropper, so we'll just let that ride out and you'll have to see. Also, getting out of the U.S. a little this next year to explore the world of music.

Mister Freedom: If you had to chose between shaving a wet dog that has psoriosis or eating an over easy egg out of a wet towel, which would you chose?

CRL CRRLL: Ha! This has got to be a Neon Brown question! I would probably pick shaving the wet dog because at least someone is benefitting out of it...

Mister Freedom: What's your process for figuring out your show sets? Where do you start?

CRL CRRLL: Ahh I see what you did here..! Your just trying to take my big secret..! No real crazy process I just play what I dig try to keep my music and art together and let it just flow. Daniel Hogans my drummer who's in a number of projects is good at improvising on my randomness.

Mister Freedom: What are your major influences?

CRL CRRLL: My major influences are usually my friends and fam there movements and art and the way they live life inspire me to create and keep on doing what I do the benefits of being around creative people all the time is that it rubs off.

For those of you unfamiliar with Young & Sick, you will probably recognize him more for his art work. He is the talented artist who created the album art for Foster The People, Maroon 5, Robin Thicke and more. Described by The Wall Street Journal as a "double threat" not only is he a talented artist, but a talented musician. Based out of Los Angeles, Nick Van Hofwegen has released his debut album via Harvest Records. Described as soulful, and sultry R&B, his album has been receiving high accolades.

Crl Crrll is a Denver based artist who we have had the opportunity to work with on a few projects. We recently did an interview before his recent Red Bull Sound Select show. CRL CRRLL | Young & Sick | Lost Lake Lounge | July 12

There are two things that you never want to hear in your life: "it's malignant" and "I'm sorry, but it's sold out". CRL CRRLL put on the best show that Ultra's seen yet and it wouldn't surprise me if his shows begin selling out like hipsters flocking to a sale at Urban Outfitters. With the lights dimmed and the fog machine billowing puffs of ambient white smoke into the crowd, Carl made his entrance. Starting off with some of his classics, but delving into some new tracks that definitely peaked the crowd's interest. Sensing that my window for becoming a professional dancer was closing, I rallied the troops and started a dance party. More and more people began joining in, finding it nearly impossible to not at least tap your toe, spin around, touch the ground, and grind on your neighbor. CRL CRRLL has been traipsing the line between starving artist and hip-hop-legend-Denver-heart-throb and last night he surpassed both of those and really stood out as someone to keep track of. Ultra has always been a friend and supporter of Carl and it is exciting to see his career begin to take off and watch him find his own niche as a performer.

Young & Sick put on an amazing show as well. Continuing the dance party from before by playing some funky beats. Nick Van Hofwegan showed up with his golden locks a flowing and hypnotized the audience with his beauty. At this point I was a couple beers deep, perspiring from all the dancing, and making friends with the homeless selling roses on Colfax. If anything it is a tribute to the sheer amount of fun there is to be had at Lost Lake Lounge. It may have been the adult beverages skewing my fun'o'meter (yes, that's a thing. Google it) but last night the stars aligned and everyone was angelic and the music was flowing like the rivers in the Garden of Eden. Y&S have been around for awhile, growing their fan base in the interim, so the dance floor was packed, the beer was abundant (did I say that already?) and the music was great. All around an amazing show, with amazing people, and an amazing venue. It was just down right, god damn, amazing.
