Pedro Giraudo Septet Will Perform The Music Of Darcy James Argue At Symphony SpaceOctober 2, 2012
On Friday, October 19th at 7:30 p.m., bassist Pedro Giraudo and his Septet will perform original arrangements of the music of Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society as part of the Seeing Jazz With George Wein Series at Symphony Space in New York. The concert, which will feature several Argue compositions, will follow a special Q&A session with Giraudo, Wein and the composer.
Argue’s innovative big band works have been performed and/or recorded in the past by such ensembles as the WDR Big Band (Germany), Big Band Palácio das Artes (Brazil) and the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra (Canada), but always with him as arranger and conductor. Giraudo, a respected composer and big band leader in his own right, will be the first to both create new arrangements of Argue’s music and perform them with a smaller group.
“When my mentor, Bob Brookmeyer, was commissioned to write arrangements, he used to tell people ‘I cannot guarantee one recognizable note,’” Argue recalls. “It’s in that spirit that I’ve asked Pedro to reimagine some of the music I’ve written for Secret Society. I’ve been a fan of his music since I first moved to New York. He has his own distinct and compelling voice as a composer-bandleader and I’ve given him carte blanche to do whatever he likes with this material. I’m not getting any kind of sneak peek. I’ll be hearing Pedro’s arrangements for the first time on the 19th along with the rest of the audience, and I look forward to being surprised.”
A five-time winner in the annual DownBeat Critics Poll, Argue is credited with “making the big band cool again” (Time Out New York) and “reinventing the jazz big band for the 21st century” (John L. Walters, The Guardian). Active in New York with Secret Society since 2005, the Vancouver native first gained international recognition with his widely acclaimed 2009 debut, Infernal Machines (New Amsterdam Records), which appeared on over 100 best-of-the-year lists and earned him a GRAMMY nomination. He and the group have since performed at major venues and festivals all over the world and recently recorded their anxiously awaited 2013 follow-up, Brooklyn Babylon (New Amsterdam Records).
