Having A Strategy is How Devi Franco Carries Forward In His Career

“Word of mouth, music buzz, and coming up with this strategy that my team and I have been doing for my past few shows and the upcoming shows that I choose not to share.”

Check out the interview with Devi Franco exclusively on Skilly Magazine Online.

Skilly: Where did this all start? Tell us about your journey in the entertainment business.
Devi Franco: It all started back in 2009. I linked up with John Conte who was one of the writers for “Blame It (On the Alcohol)” and the rest is history.

What would be your biggest piece of advice for the young kids out there trying to do what you do?
Stay original and don’t be scared to be you and step outside the box to be creative.

What are some of the hardest challenges and tasks in your position?
Balancing all my social media accounts, but lately Alien B has stepped in to help.

We all know the entertainment business is very tough, but what do you find is the best way to promote and advertise your music?
Word of mouth, music buzz, and coming up with this strategy that my team and I have been doing for my past few shows and the upcoming shows that I choose not to share.

Tell us about your city. How are the artists and the fans?
The fans are true and loyal here as long as you got them tuned in. The artists, I would say, about 90% of them have an ego issue and the unity here sucks. Having said that I work with a handle if that.

Where do you see yourself a year from today?
On a different planet performing.

Who and what were your biggest inspirations? Who do you look up to in today’s world?
My son and myself.

How do you feel about the music coming out today? Do you like it?
Don’t really know. I’m stuck in this box with no radio or windows, just a candle and beats that get pushed at me to write.

"Higher Stakes"

Devi Franco formerly known as Deven J has created his own sound which is allowing him to stand out amongst other local artists and be in a lane of his own culminating an array of music into a feel-good soundtrack for all from pre-gaming to after-parties. His formula is quite simple: make music that people actually want to hear inspired by the world through his eyes.

Devi Franco started out in Indianapolis, Indiana where he worked alongside the credited writers of “Blame It (On The Alcohol),” John Conte and Nate Walker. Becoming a dominant house-hold name in his own right, he was the featured artist in the second issue of Showoff Magazine right as he moved out to Denver in 2010 to expand and master the style of electro, dub step, pop and hip hop all into one. His explanation for the move was that Denver is one of only a handful of entertainment markets that has a growing music following and the opportunities are endless.

Devi Franco moved back to Indianapolis in 2012 to be alongside his manager who has pushed the stakes higher moving him closer to getting a deal into the industry. He currently has features by two high caliber artist such as Houston’s platinum artist T Wayne and Grammy nominated Juicy J.

Devi Franco catches the ear of big names in the industry with new single ‘Demanding’

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – One of the hottest new hip-hop artists to come out of the Midwest is Indianapolis native Devi Franco. After only a few months of work under his belt and the release of a new single called “Demanding,” he’s already catching the attention of big names like Antonio Reid Jr. and Aaron Reid, and collaborating with artists such as Wiz Khalifa.

The single is the first of many to come, and will be featured on a mixtape set to be released sometime in the first half of the year. It’s a song that he describes as more of a club track with a unique sound.

“It has a really positive and energetic vibe,” he said. “The bass gets you kind of hyped. How I work with music in general is that I’ll have beats sent over to me and I’ll go through them. If my mind connects with it, I’ll immediately go with it and get a picture in my head, and this was one of those that I just went with and it came out quick.”

Franco said he’s not an artist who follows trends, but instead chooses to break the mold and showcase a sound that is uniquely his. It comes from an intentional mentality to do whatever he feels and to avoid listening to popular hits of today on the radio so as to avoid the trap of accidentally recreating a sound.

“He’s not influenced by artists out there right now,” said his manager. “He’s himself. He believes in his own creativity. He sees things the way he sees them and wants to share that with the world. It’s almost as if he goes into the studio and sees things on a spiritual level. He really has a complex mind.”

That unique, stand-out sound has been catching the attention of fans all over Indianapolis, and a growing number of people across the country are also starting to pay attention. He’s already booked a two-concert deal in Indianapolis and Chicago, and is the only artist from Indianapolis who is on the Live Nations booking list. He’s also been featured on Fox 59, had meetings with Antonio Reid Jr. and Aaron Reid, and is currently in the studio working on a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa for a track that will be released before the summer.

That’s quite a feat for an artist who said his music career really only started as a hobby.

“I played around with music when I had time, but I didn’t start taking it seriously until 2010 when one of the writers for Blame It on the Alcohol heard one of my songs and put me under his wing and began to guide me and critique my sound on a higher level,” Franco said. “I did some ghostwriting for him. Eventually I found my way to Denver because of my love for EDM, and that city has a thriving EDM movement. Really, EDM is my first love. If I had to pick a genre, I’d probably pick that over pure hip-hop. I was messing with that sound back in 2010 before it became really popular.”

Fans who want to sample Devi Franco’s music can do so by checking out his Soundcloud page, or watching the music video for “Demanding” on YouTube. Fans can also follow him on Facebook and Instagram, or @theedevenj on Twitter, to find out more about upcoming music releases or live performances. - Starlight PR 1
