"Elk walking Releases new single "Out of My Mind""

Chicago indie rockers Elk Walking debut the lyric video for their new single “Out Of My Mind.” The single will be apart of their upcoming album Between Us, which is set to be released this coming summer.

Elk Walking (composed of Savanna Dickhut, Julian Daniell, Jeff Sullivan, Tyler Ommen, and JB Bartlett) is a breath of fresh air in a time where modern music is either peppered with excessive reverb or repetitive, synthesized backbeats. “Out Of My Mind” is certainly of no exception to the band’s distinguished, pristine sound.

“Out Of My Mind” immaculately exemplifies Elk Walking’s dynamic approach to their craft. The track offers a high degree of lyrical connectivity as Dickhut sings of the oh so human experience of having another individual stain your brain, and craving disconnect as a result. Dickhut’s vocal stylings are the perfect nexus between soulful and sweet, and when her voice combines with Daniell’s in harmony, it reveals a degree of stylistic innovation that distinguishes the band as superb auditory craftsmen.

It is all too often that artists tend to never stray too far from one sound or style, but Elk Walking artistically thrives in cultivating many into their body of work. Akin to The Allman Brothers, Elk Walking succeeds in drawing musical elements from blues, jazz, and rock and combining them to generate a work that is fresh and inventive.

“Out Of My Mind” exemplifies this talent. The delightfully twangy guitar and rollicking drum beat energizes the track, and, sonically speaking, could be at home in either of the three genres listed above. As a result, this skill makes Elk Walking’s work appealing to a wider variety of individuals.

The summer release of Between Us will be followed by a Midwest tour. Get ready folks, you won’t want to miss this.

"New Chicago music on this sunday night's local anesthetic"

I dug Elk Walking‘s debut enough to bring the duo of Savanna Dickhut and Julian Daniell in for a chat last year. The new single, “Out of my Mind”, is definitely a full-on band effort and a preview (video below) of this summer’s Between Us release. - Richard Milne

"New Chicago Music On This Sunday Night’s Local Anesthetic"

The gentleman above play heady instrumentals for the most part but drop in some vocals (and cool keys) on a track from their self-titled EP of last year that I’m finally getting around to spinning. They hit me up with this awhile back but it took me a bit to get into what it is they do. I’m there now, bunky. Also on this week’s show of new Chicago music, I’ve got a track from MONAKR featuring Matthew Santos on vocals. The rest of the guys in the band are all folks you know, too. We’ll get deeper in to that when MONAKR are my guests on next Sunday night’s Anesthetic. I really like the songwriting and vocals of Elk Walking. Hear a track (is there some kind of pun I should be pointing out right about now?) from their The Road Ahead release. Varsity return with a couple of new tunes this week. I’ll give a spin to “Eye to Eye”. I’ve never devoted a lot of time (air or otherwise) to the International Pop Overthrow fest that takes place at the Red Line Tap April 14-23 but this year I happen to be spinning a number of bands that will be performing. Up this week is Steve Ramone who will be playing on April 17 with a band featuring Chip Znuff on bass, Phil Miller of Sonia Dada on guitar, ex-Survivor/Blotto drummer Joe Kunkle, and Bruce Breckenfeld on keys. Sweet! And finally, Red Francis with a two-minute piece of audio riot called “Song A” that kicks off their new eponymous long player. There you go. Goodness awaits on this week’s Local Anesthetic, Sunday night at 7:30 here on XRT. - Richard Milne

Elk Walking (formerly The Weather) released their new single, " You Just Don't Know It Yet", this week. The band began as an acoustic folk duo of Savanna Dickhut and Julian Daniell, but with this single have brought on a full band to flush out their sound. They perform for the first time as band this Friday. The single will be a part of their forthcoming debut EP, due out this winter.

You can catch Elk Walking at Debonair Social Club on Friday, October 23rd, at Debonair Social Club with Horrible/Beaut and Guapachosos. - The Deli Magazine Chicago

Bio

Chicago-based Indie Folk-Rock band, Elk Walking, consists of five professionally trained musicians. In the first few months that the band released their debut EP, The Road Ahead, which was released March 2016, they had the opportunity to share the stage with many well-known artists at Canadian Music Week, as well as Chicago-famous festivals such as Taste of Chicago, Lakeview Arts Fest, Glenwood Arts Fest, and many more well known venues around the city.

Elk Walking began as an acoustic folk duo, Julian Daniell and Savanna Dickhut, who met while studying music in Chicago. They recognized the complementary and similar quality of each other’s songwriting and concluded together they would be a strong duo of harmonies. The two honed their skills and their collective energy for several months before their energetic and honest songwriting style emerged. It became apparent while recording their debut EP “The Road Ahead,”  the two were in need of a band. They enlisted the help of several like-minded musicians to create the full group Elk Walking, which now includes Tyler Ommen (drums) Jeff Sullivan (lead guitar) and David Thrift (bass).

Elk Walking is an acoustic and electric guitar driven indie-rock band of a rare breed.
Fronted by singer-songwriter duo Savanna Dickhut and Julian Daniell,
their music is energetic, electric and groovy yet still captures the folky acoustic flavors and lyrical focus of a singer-songwriter duo. The band is accented by fiery electric guitar and carried by powerful harmonies and meaningful songwriting. The filled out demanding sound of two lead singers is reminiscent of the sounds of Jefferson Airplane, or Fleetwood Mac and the songs are individually unique yet remain set in the bands signature sound; a mix of gritty and pretty, lonesome ballads, energetic love songs, and social commentary. The band frequently references and finds inspiration in the mysteries of nature and the living natural world.
