"EXCLUSIVE! ‘Fool’s Gold’ by Emily Clibourn"

This week’s Thursday exclusive comes from LA-based singer-songwriter Emily Clibourn, who’s sharing the first track from her soon-come debut album

es, Thursday’s rolled around once again, which means it’s once again time for Songwriting to bring you a world-exclusive brand new track. This week it’s LA’s Emily Clibourn in the hotseat, as she shares the video for Fool’s Gold, taken from her self-titled debut solo album.

Note that we said “debut solo album” there. Having moved to Los Angeles from Chicago with her family at the age of 13, Emily first pursued a career in acting before deciding that her heart lay in music. She’s recorded a number of albums with other people’s projects – including Black Eyed Peas’ DJ Motiv8, and Philly hip-hop ensemble The Lost Children Of Babylon – but Emily Clibourn, due out at the end of summer, will be her first full-length under her own name. And Fool’s Gold is the very first track on it.

Emily describes the video for Fool’s Gold as “a story of self-redemption and the quest for spirituality. It’s a montage of psychedelic and religious imagery, earthy and astral projections, outer space, racing cars, black holes and a girl who is desperate to find more. It touches on having misled perceptions of love and the things we do to temporarily ease the mind. It is about a journey that leads us to greater, more mysterious, more magical realities. A place where there is nothing to prove and there is only love.”

The hype sheet recommends this slice of torch-y, soul- and jazz-tinged adult pop to fans of Lykke Li and Lana Del Ray. We’d say Amy Winehouse would be another valid comparison but, as always, you can make your own mind up… - Songwriting Magazine

"Hear It First: Emily Clibourn Debuts New Album"

Singer Emily Clibourn has recently been attracting attention from Los Angeles music tastemaker blogs such as Free Bike Valet, Culture Collide and The LA Deli. Her debut album, Blow, is set to drop October 16, but Yahoo Music has it a day early for fans to get a taste of her sound.

“I found myself in the midst of an existential crisis. That’s what this album is about,” says Clibourn of the set. “I used to work a job that bored me to death and I would spend all my free time at bars, drinking to ignore the present and hide from the future. I would sit around and look at pictures of people living in beautiful places, living wild, free and soulful lives.

“I wanted this so badly but I didn’t know how to get it, and how to get out of where I was. It was like I was stuck with feet in cement, like I was drowning. This album is about the angst to get free, free from the monotony, the insanity of the mind and to be free in every sense, to spiritually wake up.

You have to take that last breathe, let go and know that it will never be the same. You want life to go on lasting a certain way forever because it’s easy or comfortable, but it can’t. It needs to change. That’s what this record is about; endings and finding the way out of the fog for new beginnings.” - Yahoo! Music

"Emily Clibourn releases sultry new single, "Burgundy""

Emily Clibourn first belted out her very essence on her single "Fools Gold", a classic torch song in which she wraps her smoky vocals around an atmospheric jazz groove. She's awfully more determined on her latest, entitled "Burgundy", as if Clibourn has let go off that no-good scum for a far more valuable companion: herself. "I've got 17 ways to make we go wild", she sings playfully with a confidence that's both sensual and elegant.

Clibourn is set to release her first solo project sometime in October. - Juan Rodríguez - The Deli Magazine

"New Song Alert: Fools Gold by Emily Clibourn"

Los Angeles-based indie pop singer-songwriter Emily Clibourn has released a track called Fools Gold, which is the first track from her upcoming debut self-titled album, set to release late Summer 2015. - Indie Minded

"Song Premiere: “For The Love” by Emily Clibourn"

Emily Clibourn is a woman of many talents. A former child actor, Clibourn landed roles on the American version of Heartbreak High and the Christopher McDonald film Children on Their Birthdays, and the Chicago native has been penning songs since the tender age of 13. Her budding musical talent did not go unnoticed: Baby Bash’s Curtis Byrd and the Black Eyed Peas’ Antoneus Maximus and DJ Motiv8 have all collaborated with the phenom.

“For The Love” is the latest sultry single off Clibourn’s debut LP Black Velvet, out next month. It’s a somber ballad with jazz and soul influences flowing through its veins. Rife with heartbreak and longing, this number delves into the psyche of a woman trying to cut herself free from the spell of a man. Here, she ruminates over his seemingly indelible hold on her as she belts, “Isn’t it sad how a girl goes mad for the love of a man? - Culture Collide

"Emily Clibourn, releases new video, “Fool’s Gold""

Clibourn was recently featured in Music Connection’s Hot 100 Live Unsigned Artists and Bands, where they praised her for her “clairvoyant song craft and vivid artistry.” - The Portable Infinite

"Catch the Unique Sound of Emily Clibourn at Haus of Eve"

Emily Clibourn has an equally unique voice. She has this jazzy/bluesy/ akin to Lana Del Rey (but so much better than LDR!)

I find that Clibourn vocal stylings are really interesting and captivating. Her vocals take you down the song’s path and it’s a very interesting journey. The range of songs is amazing. I have listened to them each and I can’t wait to get through them at least a couple more times. I am sure after a month of listening to this, I will have a lot more to say.

Love the feel of the jazzy vocals of the early 20th century jazz singers. Yet as in the video shown above, she brings contemporary melodic riffs and styling to the vocals that makes her style new and fresh. I just love it! The depth of the song list on this album is solid. I would suggest you scroll down and check out another song (embed) that I find equally as interesting.

Her music has been described as “A passionate madness polarized between a kind of lethargic carelessness and obsessed mania”.

I couldn’t describe it any better. This is an album for any time of year. It’s perfect though for this weird LA weather which has the populous off balance with the contradiction of so much humidity in a desert as well as rain, flash floods and triple digit heat that is so scorching that you feel like stripping down to… well ” down to there”.

Buy the CD or download it. You won’t be sorry! - LA Story

"HEAR: Emily Clibourn – “Fools Gold”"

“I’ve been sanctified”. So sings Emily Clibourn in her new song, and I feel sanctified. If a voice can save, Clibourn is the one to listen. Clibourn was born outside of Chicago, but grew up in Hollywood. She originally wanted to be an actress, but decided to concentrate on music. Thank you, Emily. Clibourn has one of those voices that actually takes you heavenward. Her voice is similar to Jewel at her best. Her new LP is set to be released this summer. I am ready to have her save me. - Audio Fuzz

"Introducing: Emily Clibourn"

Luxurious, jazz inspired vocals are at the fore of Emily Clibourn's new track "Fools Gold". The new single, which is out now through iTunes, is taken from the artist's upcoming album, the appropriately titled Black Velvet. As of yet unsigned, the Los Angeles based singer songwriter is using Kickstarter to fund the full length. Visit her crowdfunding page and pledge towards Black Velvet here.

With Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey providing contemporary reference points; Clibourn is perhaps better compared to jazz and soul musicians of old, drawing from a classic but still beguiling creative treasure trove. There's doubtlessly a timeless quality to her vocal, which licks and curls like a cat around her piano-based style of sound. Excellent production seals the deal, and makes this lady one to watch in the not too distant future.

Having previously worked as an actor, Clibourn has now focuses her attention on the world of music, working with the likes of Curtis Byrd (Baby Bash), The Lost Children of Babylon, Antoneus Maximus and DJ Motiv8 in the process. Despite this fresh ambition, Clibourn's been writing her own material since she was 13 years old, adding an established weight to her obvious talent. - Drunken Werewolf

"SEE: Emily Clibourn – Fool’s Gold"

Sultry, that’s the first word that comes to me after hearing Emily Clibourn. If there were sirens out there, casting their aural nets to lure unsuspecting sailors to their death, the choir would be led by the beautiful voice of Clibourn. She reminds the listener of a more alive, sexier del Rey or an adult Likke Li (no insult to the other two; del Rey and Li are heroes of mine.) It is just that Clibourn’s sexy, bluesish voice has all the right qualities to make the listener feel sexy her/himself. Let’s put it this way: if music were romance, Clibourn’s music would be sex. I love her. Next bedroom experience will be to the sound of Clibourn’s rich voice. Oh, and her production is perfect; always supporting her voice, never overwhelming. AMAZING. - Audio Fuzz

The colorful, artsy video is a fantastic accompaniment to the soulful single. It’s eery, with a touch of 90’s nostalgia.

"Emily Clibourn"

Fans of Florence, Duffy, Lorde and Lana Dey Rey should get ready for Emily Clibourn.

She is what Lana is trying to be...except she doesn't have to try. She just oozes cool and this girl is talented as hell!

I think, if promoted correctly, she could be bigger and outlast a lot of those ladies as well.

See why for yourself. - A Little Bit of Soul

"New Year New Tunes 2016"

For more musical greetings from L.A comes Emily Clibourn, who commands her own brand of gauzy, R&B-tinged dream pop with psych flourishes. "Emily Clibourn shares “For the Love”"

Los Angeles based pop singer songwriter, Emily Clibourn tackles familiar ground on her new song, "For the Love". It’s a tale of destructive love, of being unable to walk away and of loving a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. It’s familiar territory, but Clibourn’s heartfelt and soulful approach gives the old standard a new lease of life.

Clibourn also takes inspiration from a less than expected source, explaining: "This song is simultaneously about my relationship with red wine and a man I used to be in love with. I knew I needed to leave that particular situation or person or habit, but had a really hard time doing so. I knew that I could, but had to work up the strength."

With some solid jazz and blues influences, "For the Love" establishes Clibourn as an artist worth keeping an eye on.

Clibourn started her entertainment career as a child actor, but decided to go down a musical path. She’s previously worked with notable musicians and producers, such as Curtis Byrd (Baby Bash), The Lost Children of Babylon, Antoneus Maximus and DJ Motiv8 (Black Eyed Peas).
