Brooklyn post-punk group Fang Island will release Major, the follow-up to their self-titled 2010 record, July 24 on Sargent House. In a press release, the band said they chose the name Majorin honor of “Valley girl colloquialism,” “major key,” and “Steely Dan’s ‘Any Major Dude’,” among many other reasons. Fang Island headlined WIUX’s annual Culture Shock festival and brought 10 megatons of energy and wailing axes Saturday night at The Bishop which it was relocated to at the last moment because of inclement weather. Why should Schubert have all the fun? In both sound and attitude, Fang Island’s self-titled 2010 debut was all about the overture. Slabs of three-guitar ham steak shouldered happily against wiggy electronics and a crowded ruckus of wails, the sort of joyous choruses you’d hear from the Polyphonic Spree or even the Flaming Lips, whom these guys have toured with.
