At the age of six, Gerald Hinton’s grandmother realized that had a gift. One of eight children, the only male out of three with the ability to see, hear or speak, she placed a microphone in his hand at St. Mary’s Free Baptist Church in Apex, NC. The rest is history.
Gerald grew up listening to traditional gospel music but his style is his own. He began his music career at the age of 13, when he went on the road with Howard Thomas and the Pearly Gates. At the age of 17, before attending Shaw University, where he majored in drama and minored in music, he belonged to a group called The Liberators.
In the early 80’s Gerald began singing with Johnny Holloway and the Gospel Jubilees, which led him to the creation of his own group, Gerald Hinton & the New Redeemers. In the mid-80’s the album “From Way Back” was released followed by ” Groom Me” which produced the hit “It’s Me Oh Lord” and has aired on Bet, the Word Network, the Dream Network, and many other national and local broadcasting outlets. In fact, it is the only local video to reach number one on MBC’s Top Gospel Countdown, hosted by Benny Moore.
In 2005, Gerald Hinton & the New Redeemers were honored with the Favorite Video and Favorite CD of the Year Awards at the 2005 American Gospel Quartet Convention.
Gerald’s 3rd project. ” You Don’t Know How Blessed You Are” garnered national attention when it caught the ear of Rev. Milton Biggham, who signed him to Savoy Records, a division of Malaco Records. The title cut, ” You Don’t Know How Blessed You Are” gained national airplay and won him the 2006 Songwriter of the Year Award, which was presented by the NC Gospel Announcers Guild. In 2008, Hinton was also awarded the Light 103.9/McDonald’s Lamplighter Heritage award.
His Latest album ” Journey of Love” has already created quite the buzz and has been embraced by mainstream media as well as modern Christianity. The young and old and even the health and wellness community has fallen in love with his up-beat Latin-inspired cut ” It’s Your Time”, which showcases an original line dance.
This album truly has something for every occasion: weddings, reunions, anniversaries, fundraisers, and concerts… just to name a few.
