"Showtimes "Shameless to Feature Greta Van Fleet's Highway Tune"

SAGINAW, MI — The musicians who make up Frankenmuth rock quartet Greta Van Fleet will watch the hit Showtime series "Shameless" for the first time Jan. 17.

"Actually, none of us have seen the show," said Sam Kiszka, who plays bass for Greta Van Fleet.

While it might seem strange for the guys to start a series with episode two of season six, there is a specific reason they are tuning in. The Greta Van Fleet song "Highway Tune" will play at some point during the show.

"We don't know in what aspect they are using it," said Mike Barbee, the band's manager.

The show could use five seconds of the song or the whole thing. They'll find out with the rest of the world when the episode, titled "#Abortion Rules" airs at 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, on the premier cable network.

According to Showtime, "Shameless" stars Oscar-nominated William H. Macy as Chicagoan Frank Gallagher, the proud single dad of six smart, independent kids. Gallagher spends a lot of time at the bar, but the kids have found ways to grow up in spite of him.

A publishing deal Great Van Fleet previously had with North Star Media resulted in their song's use on "Shameless." While they no longer are working with the publisher, the deal with Showtime occurred when they were still a client.

"We gave them the music we kind of wanted them to shop around," Barbee explained.

The band, which consists of Kiszka, his brothers Josh and Jake Kiszka and Danny Wagner, has spent a lot of time recently in the recording studio. The Frankenmuth teenagers are recording with Al Sutton at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak.

While the band thought they would be done with a new EP by now, their plans changed in the midst of recording.

"Originally, we were going to do a five-song album," Barbee said.

Then, music producer Edward "Punch" Andrews caught wind of Greta Van Fleet.

"He's kind of leading the way, at this point, as far as the album goes," Barbee said of the producer, who also has acted as a manager for Bob Seger and Kid Rock.

While they can't pin down an exact date, the guys say you will hear new music from Greta Van Fleet in 2016. Barbee said he is shooting for an album release in April or May.

"It will be worth the wait," Sam Kiszka said. - Jessica Shephard MLIVE.COM
