"Transgender rights rally draws hundreds at Boston City Hall"

BOSTON — At Boston City Hall Plaza, where hundreds of demonstrators rallied in support of transgender rights ahead of the midterm election’s ballot Question 3, Jackie Rae, a Berklee music student and transgender woman, sang the lyrics of the song written by herself “Who am I?”

“Am I the boy you thought I’d be? Who am I? Am I the girl you just can’t see? Who am I? Is it wrong that I don’t know who am I? Is it dumb for me to hope that things will change in this world and no more asking boy or girl?”

Rae wrote this song when she was struggling with her gender identity. She describes going on a self-discovery process where she explored her identity using music.

“I’m more than what you see. I’m just happy being me,” Rae sang.

After coming out as a transgender woman in September, Rae got more opportunities to perform and became more confident. She decided to use music to help transgender people understand themselves.

“That’s what we do as artists,” Rae said. “Speak for people who do not have voices.” - Boston University News Service

"In Photos: Transgender Rights Activists Rally in Boston"

On Sunday afternoon, hundreds of protestors gathered near Boston City Hall Plaza to rally for transgender rights in Massachusetts.

The event was organized by the Yes on 3 Coalition, which is supported by a number of transgender rights activist groups, national businesses, and local government leaders.

The rally was organized following a New York Times report on a Trump administration memo that argued in favor of defining gender solely on the basis of genitalia at birth.

Throughout the rally, local community members, including Jackie Rae — a 20-year-old songwriter from Virginia and a Berklee College of Music student — performed music sets and poetry. - The Harvard Crimson

Bio

Jackie Rae is a singer-songwriter based in Richmond, VA. Jackie is an unapologetic trans woman, who candidly shares her story through music. Jackie’s debut EP is expected in 2021. Her music details the journey of transition from male to female. It tackles subjects like confusion over identity, dating as a trans person, the importance of family, and reclaiming power through confidence. As a student at Berklee College of Music from 2017-2019, Jackie made connections with musicians and producers who helped make her vision of trans-inclusive music a reality. She recorded her EP with Berklee graduate and producer Sarah Meyz in the summer of 2019 while living in Boston. Meyz recorded, edited, and mixed the EP, and Ricardo Cecchi handled the mastering. Her debut single "Good As Gold" is coming to all streaming platforms on August 21st!

One of the pivotal moments in Jackie’s life was when in October 2018, she was invited to perform at Boston’s Rally for Transgender Rights, sponsored by the Massachusetts Yes on 3 Coalition and attended by Boston Mayor, Marty Walsh. This rally was organized following a leaked memo from the Trump administration, which suggested eliminating federal discrimination protections for transgender people, and would clearly define gender as sex at birth. Jackie performed three of the four songs featured on “Her Highness,” and was able to connect with so many people who resonated with her music. This was a turning point for Jackie. From that moment, she witnessed the power her music possessed. It brought trans people together, relating to a unique experience rarely represented in the music industry. Jackie's goal as an artist is to use her privilege and platform to lift up trans youth with her music, striving to inspire and create lasting change.
