"Jay The Protege- Ceiling"

Tell us about this project?

Ceiling is a song I made at the happiest point of my life thus far; it seemed like everything was going right for me, and it felt like there were no limits as to what I could accomplish. This song, which is a tropical bop with a breezy, feel good vibe, perfectly encapsulates that feeling.
I recorded this song with my friend, Don’t Jump, whom I dropped a song with on New Year’s Day in 2018. We released “Ceiling” exactly one year later, and when we listen to it we realize how far we’ve come as artists, as well as human beings.

Who were your musical inspirations growing up?

Eminem first and foremost. He was the first hip-hop artist I was put on to growing up. I watched his 60 Minutes interview in 2010 and saw that he kept a shoe box filled of rhymes, ideas, etc. I was fascinated by this, and began reading the dictionary daily and compiling rhymes on loose-leaf.
Mac Miller was a near second. I’ve been listening to him since he released K.I.D.S, and essentially lived vicariously through him during his career. He encapsulated everything I ever wanted to be, and I saw a bit of myself in him.

Are You Working On Any New Projects?

Yes. I am currently in the process of recording my debut album, “Substance Mixed With Ignorance” which explores the dichotomy of the lyrics and soundscape of modern hip-hop, expected to be released in the first half of 2019. “Ceiling” is the first single off this project.
How long have you been creating music?

I first hopped on the mic when I was seventeen and dropped a remix of a Wiz Khalifa song on SoundCloud. It somehow complied 10,000 plays in a month, and it motivated me to keep pursuing music. I met a local producer who went to my high school in 2016 and recorded music in his basement for about a year until I found a nearby studio, which is where I currently record, mix, and master my tracks.

Do you want to say anything to the people who support your music?

I love every single one of you. - Indie Nation Blog

Bio

Over a smoked-out mélange of trap, boom bap and R&B, New York native Jay The
Protégé provides an incredibly unique listening experience. Through gritty
lyricism, abstract melodies, and a knack for storytelling, Jay blurs the lines
of genre by drawing inspiration from soundscapes across the current state of the
industry.

Polished with a modern sound, yet still a by-product of the older
generation with a classic feel, his sonic aesthetic blends the hazy melodicism
of his new-age contemporaries with the multisyllabic rhymes and cutting-edge
flows of his idols.

After his father, grandfather, and grandmother passed away when he was a child, Jay learned how to face adversity at a very young age. This fuels his determination to succeed, and created a willingness to become independent by learning to do things without the help of others.

Currently an undergraduate student at Hofstra University, Jay is balancing the books with the hooks; he maintains a competitive GPA while simultaneously competing with other artists for a fanbase he can call his own.
