"Meet JFP"

Today we’d like to introduce you to JFP.

JFP, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My mom was an aerobics instructor in the 80’s and she took me to the record store every week. I was digging through some records and came across a 45 by RUN DMC called “You be illin!” My life was forever changed, I fell in love with Hip Hop. I listened, I learned, I repeated, then I started to create my own… At first, I thought I could never be a rapper, but rather a poet would be more expected. But I knew what I wanted to do and I eventually I put my words to beats. My first tour was in 2007, The HomoRevolution Tour. It was the first LGBT Hip Hop tour through the US and got major exposure. I was married at the time and performed with my wife on violin. Fast forward through some life hurdles, including divorce, arrest, and sickness I am still standing and stronger than ever.

I have performed at numerous Pride Festivals throughout the US, played many skate shops, wine bars and clubs from LA, to SF to NYC and I’ve toured Europe three times. I am currently preparing for another trip to Spain to rock mics and spread my light. My music is truthful, authentic and intense. I write every word I rap and believe it is extremely important to use my platform to say something useful to the masses. First you must truly love yourself, then you can really help others do the same. I got to this point in my career by never giving up, and believing in my talents regardless of circumstance. You must believe in yourself first, then the others will follow.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes absolutely a rough road as an Independent Queer Rapper. I’m a white, gay women, some would say I don’t belong in Hip Hop and they have made it known. But as long as I’m speaking my truths, from my heart, no body can tell me nothing! The biggest hurdle was probably my arrest in 2009 for cannabis. Even though now this is legal it still cost my quite a bit of time, energy, mental health and resources in my life. This year marks ten years since that arrest and I am so happy and grateful to be far away from that experience and on the road to success!!!

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
What sets me apart is my drive. Many people would have already given up. I will not stop. I will be an 80 years old, grey lady rapping! I am here to spread a message and Hip Hop is the most accessible vehicle in the world. I eat, sleep and breath hip hop. I am not afraid to speak up and piss people off if it is the truth. In a world that is continually trying to silence us our voices have become our most valuable commodity. I am known for high energy, intensity and radically honesty! What sets me apart is all the things that used to hold me back. My unique perspective as a queer women is now of great value and needed. Additionally, I am not here for Fame, but rather service. To me “making it” is simply being able to pay my rent with music. I desire to use my time and energy to help raise the quality of life for my friends with disabilities. So when I do “make it” you’ll never see my buy a diamond or a Bentley, but rather on experiences that last a lifetime and benefit many people.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I see it getting more and more diverse, which is a blessing. Many different types of people love hip hop and everybody wants to see themselves represented. I believe my voice is much better received now than it was ten years ago. And hopefully ten years for now it will be the norm to have several dope, talented, successful Queer MCs in the spotlight.

"Revolution"

… “When she comes out onstage, it’s just halos, flashes of light, all kinds of fireworks,” Myers said. “She just has a presence. She comes out onstage and dominates. I think I’m going to be one of those people bragging that I was there from the beginning. I think she’s going places.”

"Let's get physical"

You might not believe that somebody who has
given herself the F-word as a middle name
would be as much fun as Julie Fucking Potter.
But it’s true. This rapper-comic-performer
who hails from Bakersfield, Calif., and currently
resides in West Hollywood, has got the
good life figured out. With her album, Exodus,
which came out last year, her recent participation
in the Homorevolution Tour and her gig
at a three-month inspirational writing retreat
in Amsterdam, well, things seem to be coming
together for this feisty lady. She’s even an
underground hit on CDbaby.com.
If you’ve never listened to Potter’s music
or seen her with her improv group, Crisis
Hopkins, it’s important to note that this
woman has a serious message, but also has
a sense of humor about herself. Her album
tackles a range of issues, and you’ll find her
feeling downright spiteful about everything
from straight women who tease, to anyone who doesn’t appreciate Nancy
Pelosi’s position as Speaker of the House. But the real treat in Potter’s
music is that it’s grounded in the specificity of an unglamorous world.
“It’s a crazy thing to work as a server,” she says in “Server Homies,”
her homage to those in food service. “You run around like a mad person, but you have to give good service at the table. I think you learn so much about someone when you go out to eat with them and you see how they treat their server.”
Potter’s “Run. Bust. Blow.” outlines three attainable steps to happiness:
running (at least 20 minutes, three times a week), masturbating
(it relieves stress) and smoking pot (to slow down and enjoy yourself).
Surprised to find a rapper who promotes exercise? Well, Potter isn’t
your average rapper. In addition to playing softball and football, she runs marathons and has a college degree in kinesiology.
So how did this girl-jock get into rapping? “I’ve always wanted to be
on stage…I grew up in the golden age of West Coast gangster rap…the
raw expressiveness and emotion connected to rap is what I fell in love
with.” But it wasn’t until 2004, during her time abroad in Amsterdam, thatPotter took some acting classes and actually started appearing on stage.
“Improv really gives you that no-fear quality…You realize that you’re
never going to fail as long as you’re doing it, which is the whole entire
point of improv: Just do it and you are successful.”
Four years later, here she is in your face. Something has to be said for
having the kind of drive that’s created her success, but Potter is nonchalant
about it: “Just believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in you, how
can anybody else?”
So Potter has returned to Amsterdam, the place where it all began,
and is currently working on new material for another album. She plans toproduce the beats for this album with her wife, Caroline Dream, whoseviolin work can be heard on the “San Francisco Values” track. Some ofher new lyrics feel reflective, introspective and more personal than her previous work. It’s different, but Potter feels confident about it, as she does about most things.
“I have willed so much just by believing it and thinking about it,” she
says. And it must be working. [kamala puligandla] n - Curve Mag

Queer Hip Hop
Performer Review
By: Ernest Hardy

…..“There is a place for intelligent, loving, conscious hip-hop from a group of highly talented people,” says San Francisco’s 29-year-old Julie Fucking Potter. “Minorities speaking their truth and putting it in your face is exactly how hip-hop started.”

…..Next up is Potter, whose material lays bare her Bay Area politics. “If I must claim a culture,” says Potter after the show, “I claim San Francisco culture. I will boast about this city with my dying breath. There is something we have figured out here: Coexist, be who you are, follow your dreams, give generously, and love with every part of yourself.” Her material shows the influence of Missy Elliott in ribald songs about psycho ex-girlfriends, smoking weed, and the drudgery of working as a server in Bakersfield, Calif. If her flow is a tad generic, her eye for storytelling detail is sharp, and she attacks each track with gusto. The highlight of Potter’s set occurs when her wife, Caroline, a ringer for a shaved Sinead O’Connor, takes the stage with a nimble violin accompaniment.

Though Potter flaunts her politics, she makes it clear she doesn’t want her sexual orientation to define her as an artist. Like many homo-hop artists, she teeters across the tightrope of being down with and down for fellow LBGT folks and not wanting to be boxed in due to that allegiance. “Yes, I’m queer,” says Potter. “I care about the health and prosperity of this community…I’m an out, strong lesbian, so I’m going to uphold certain ideals. But I don’t want to be labeled as a quote-unquote gay rapper. I’m a person who raps who is also gay.” - The Advocate

JULIE FUCKING POTTER
Julie Fucking Potter, a.k.a. JFP (left), is one half of a hip-hop-and-violin duo with her partner of seven years, Beau Dream, a.k.a. CNOTE (right). A longtime advocate for LGBT visibility in the hip-hop world, JFP was a part of the groundbreaking Homorevolution Tour in 2007, the first hip-hop tour featuring only out LGBT artists. She’s currently enrolled at California State University, Long Beach, and pursuing her credential in adapted physical education—but her homework doesn’t preclude Potter from remaining heavily involved with the campus LGBT organization as a student assistant. Assembling its first queer hip-hop concert and a showcase called Diversitunes was just the beginning—Potter loves hearing feedback from her fans and planning future community gatherings, and hopes to “inspire, empower and unite the LGBTQ community. We must realize, and then utilize, the infinite power within us all.” JFP is writing and recording with CNOTE on a series of free summer mix-tapes and prepping her sophomore album Home Grown Fantasy for a late 2011 release. –KL - GO Magazine

FRIDAY, MARCH 30

…JFP (Julie Fucking Potter) kicked it hilariously white-girl style, but then tears were rolling down my face when she brought out her wife to play violin on the pointed song, "San Francisco Values."
