Arts & Hearts: Tickets go on Sale June 1

May 24, 2010

Martha’s Trouble is about more than music.

Sure, Rob and Jen Slocumb are trying to make a living, but the husband-wife duo do benefits when they can. They can be a great promotional tool for the band, but that’s not why they do them.

“You get something more than what you gave,” said Jen Slocumb.

Martha’s Trouble aren’t the only artists that feel this way. For the Arts & Hearts benefit event June 10 at The Event Center in Opelika, they will be joined by the band My 2 Wings and spoken word artist Kolayah-KeeVan, as well as 20 local artists providing pieces of various mediums for auction.

The event will benefit Pam Worthington, a single mom who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer; the Alabama Rural Ministry and the American Cancer Society.

Slocumb, who is friends with Worthington, said she and her husband felt drawn to help because it’s the kind of cause that people “rally” to support.

“It’s amazing to me to see people help out in a situation like this,” said Slocumb.

Local restaurants and businesses are helping out too, donating food and prizes.

The $25 admission fee covers music, hors d’oeuvres and door prizes throughout the evening. Drinks will be available from a cash bar. Tickets will be sold, starting June 1, at Magnolia Salon in Auburn and online at http://www.marthastrouble.com.

The pieces provided by the local artists, including paintings, ceramics, candles, jewelry and sculptures, will be sold in an auction to raise money for the causes.
