Blue Monday

Posted By Dim from Outer space February 3, 2010

Hello.

Someone significant, but new to Facebook/Myspace/Networking sites, recently made fun of this very blog.

To be fair, the mickey taking wasn't just aimed at this blog in particular, but at ALL online blogs/status updates. Her criticism was that tone I used in my writings to you just wasn't a true reflection of my personality.

She presents the argument that I'm an antisocial old grump, and yet in my comments on here, I come across as a jovial, happy go lucky sort of fella.

Whilst she's entirely correct with her assessment of my general character, it did make me pause and wonder if I'm being somehow dishonest. Yes, these sort of things make me stop and think.

I don't think that I'm lying to you all. I've tried to keep these posts upbeat, informative, and occasionally funny. The way I figure is that if I was interested in a band, and one of its members shared his thoughts about the whole experience online, I'd be keen to read about them.

Sure I try to fluff my prose up a bit; I mean it would be a dull affair if I just listed past and future events emotionlessly, wouldn't it?

And, the more I think about it, the language that I use on here isn't so different from my everyday discourse anyway.

Goddammit E...I've wasted precious brain activity considering your argument, and through pure logic, you have been proved a) utterly wrong and b) comPLETELY out of touch with the rest of the world. The last time I considered one of your arguments was when you claimed that my lyrics feature the words 'I' and 'you' a lot, which in itself made some sort of statement about my relationship with the world at large.

I actually spent a lot of time considering this - it even prompted the lyric 'I, I, I - doesn't make an egotist/its just a point of view/I'm not trying to be rude' from 'In the long run'.

But, seriously, name me five popular songs that AREN'T written/sung in the first person?

I've just grabbed a list of the top selling singles from the last couple of years, and whilst I don't equate popularity with quality, or depth (and for goodness sake, we're talking about an artform (albeit not necessarily the most cerebral) here, which surely by its very nature is completely subjective, so back off)....let's see if THEY feature the words 'I' or 'you' in them...

2003 "Where Is the Love?" Black Eyed Peas

Lyrics:

What's wrong with the world mama?

People living like aint got no mamas

I think the whole worlds addicted to the drama

RESULT: just three lines in before 'I' used

2005 "Is This the Way to Amarillo" Tony Christie feat. Peter Kay

Lyrics:

When the day is dawning on a Texas Sunday morning

How I long to be there with Marie who's waiting for me there

RESULT: two lines in

2009 "Poker Face" Lady GaGa

Mum mum mum mah Mum mum mum mah

I wanna hold em' like they do in Texas

RESULT: see above

...I've just completely lost all interest in this.
