"Rising Stars: Meet Luke Oakley"

One of the most versatile artists in Jacksonville, Florida’s underground music scene. OAK has been making his name known throughout his hometown, as well as the rest of Florida since he started performing at shows in 2014. OAK began making music at age 11 in 2007. Since then, he dedicates time on a daily basis to perfect his craft. Every year OAK rock’s countless shows around the state of Florida and occasionally other southern states. To date, he has released four projects. His last EP, “More Cowbell,” was a journey into OAK’s psychedelic experiences, as well as a peek behind the curtain into his personal life. Over 200 people were in attendance at the More Cowbell release show in Jacksonville. One can easily notice OAK’s sonic evolution with each new project. OAK prides himself on versatility, which helps separate him from being boxed in as a “rapper”.

In 2016, OAK & CircleBoyReed founded “Squadrant 4”, a Jacksonville based music collective that now includes Big Yami and Self (AKA Deetor). Squadrant 4 has been performing as a collective at every show for the past few years. Each artist bringing their own unique style to the table, this is a group of young artists that have demonstrated to be something new to the underground. They are currently working on a collaborative album titled “Strictly 4 My Squadrant”, as well as solo projects, so there is a lot of Squadrant 4 music to look forward to in the near future. OAK has shared the stage with an impressive list of artists that include: Ski Mask the Slump God Project, Pat Robb Banks, Xavier Wulf (x3), Pouya (x7), Chris Travis, Ghostmane, Da$h, Yung Simmie (x2), Lil Debbie, Riff Raff, The Underachievers, Yung Pinch, Warhol SS, Ramirez (x3), Germ (x3), Mikey the Magician (x2), Fat Nick (x5), Montana of 300, WifisFuneral, Soldier Kidd, DoLA, Fukkit, Bodega Bamz, Nyck Caution, Kirk Knight, Ronny J, Tankhead 666, Danny Towers, Evergreen Terrace, Rhythm of Fear, Stitches.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life has certainly been a wild ride in recent years. Overcoming family losses, helping my longtime girlfriend cope with PTSD, and dealing with my own depression are just a few struggles I’ve had to navigate. Nothing has come easy, but the foundation we’ve built with Squadrant 4 motivates me to keep pushing even when skies are grey. I’m my own biggest critic, I constantly nitpick my content apart which I feel helps me evolve as an artist. The road towards success in the music industry, I feel, is rarely smooth. I’ve been scammed by blogs, graphic artists, social media influencers, and photographers. It’s all a learning process, and even though losing money is frustrating it’s still important to have that knowledge so I can make smarter moves in the future.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Primarily I am known as a “rapper”, but I don’t feel that this term fully illustrates who I am as an artist. Versatility is the name of my game. I’ve been dabbling with other genres outside of rap music, as well as working on a stand-up comedy routine, creating Squadrant 4 brand merchandise for our upcoming website, writing skits/short films, directing videos, filming videos, and most recently learning how to make custom rugs. I’m very proud of the fanbase we’ve created, especially in Jacksonville. We became known for having wild crowds at our shows which has attracted a lot of energetic young folks. Squadrant 4 strives to bring a fun and unique experience for all live crowds who come rock out with us.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We are very excited to show you all what Squadrant 4 has in store for you. Everyone on our team is a unique talent. Even though we haven’t been releasing as much as we normally would due to Covid-19 and the current events happening in our country, we certainly haven’t stopped creating. We evolve on a daily basis and our work reflects that.
