SOUTH PADRE ISLAND: Baby Shark Bellyflop Attacks, Concussions, Cowboy Rockers and Monster Shrimpies!Posted By from September 25, 2009-------------------------------------------------------------------------- READ ALL OF KIMBERLY'S TOUR BLOGS AND POST COMMENTS: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow, where do I start? Adam Brewer asked us to play at his first ever Seafood and Music Festival on beautiful South Padre Island, and really, how could we possibly refuse???? YEAH!!!!!!!!! ISLAND TIME!!! The Threej and I left at about two in the morning, and I drove straight there from Austin, about eight hours in all, with stops. I was completely out of my mind by the time we got there. We checked in to a really nice hotel that the Festival had given us to stay in, and I crashed for like four hours.. That night, we played the VIP kick-off party at a bar called, PADRE ROCK. Free tequila and booze for everyone with a VIP badge all night. You KNOW it's gonna be rowdy by 11. We saw lots of nice bands play, mostly Americana and Blues.. The headliner for the festival was a big country star named, "Kevin Fowler". So yeah, there were alot of Tejano, Americana and Blues bands. And us. :P Well, Bowling for Soup was more pop than anything. And ArcAttack and Dreamt the End were there to add some rockage. Anyway, ALL OF THE MUSIC was great! Back to the party. The locals were all really sweet, and everyone was super cool to us. I met a beautiful girl named Coi who was there as a celebrity chef from Hell's Kitchen [a TV show], some really awesome musicians, sponsors, AWESOME Roadway Productions staff and just all sorts of coolios. By the time we played, it was like, WOW - these people have been DRINKING. There was some definite choas during our set-up and during the show. A guy was thrown out for grabbing my mic and planting himself on stage. He was just way rockin out and got all angry.. I took it as a compliment and appreciated the rockage. A few people ended up being pulled off stage at times.. Excited girls mostly. Can't say that I had a problem with them one bit. They were awesome. This place had no sound system, and we just guessed our way through the set. I hit my head pretty hard at one point and didn't even realize it.. But when I went to bed, I didn't wake up for like 16 hours - at 7pm!!! And i was all out of it.. I guess I had a concussion. Not the first, and surely not the last. That was a rough show! Anyway, that NIGHT [since I slept all day], we finally set up at the fest to get a day of merch table-ing in before show day, the next day. We had a little trouble from the police getting in, but Mikey from Roadway came and saved the day. Thanks, Mikey! He took good care of us all weekend. I was so out of it, that I didn't even realize that the merch tent I found near our stage where we were to play the following day had, "Kevin Fowler" printed all over it. I asked the nice kid manning it to skooch his stuff over a little, so I could share the space with him. I seriously thought it was like a festival tent for all the bands.. He totally let me in and didn't say a word about it. I even put my lights all over it and made it my little merch home, to the max. It's kind of embarrassing now that I know it was their private property, and I completely took it over. Haha.. yeah.. The nice merch boy became my buddy for the day and even helped me watch the place while I took breaks. I gave him a One-Eyed Doll shirt, and he put it right on! What a sweety. He admitted to me that the whole crew were rockers. I totally believed him, especially after one of the stage hands came up to me and was like, "DUDE ONE-EYED DOLL YEAHHHHHHHHHH!" Yay! I stayed at the table through the night and watched Kevin Fowler freaking rock the crowd of cowboys. Wow. I'd never seen a big country singer show. They all had like Kevin Fowler beer koozies and stuff. He was pretty nice.. Stayed for autographs and pictures for hours, until the very last person got their stuff signed. A guy in an ACDC shirt and white cowboy hat [an odd mixture - cowboy rocker??] struck up a conversation with Three and me while waiting for the line to die down. He was pretty nice. He asked if I could get his hat signed by Kevin. I was like, "No way - I'm not cutting in line - you just wait like everyone else! I don't work for him, we're just merch neighbors. I'll sign it, though. GIMME!" I totally autographed that guy's cowboy hat, right front and center. I stuck a button on it, too. Then Number Three got the back. Yesss.. I wore the hat for awhile and did cowboy dances, which I don't think the people in line found too amusing. "LOOK AT ME!!! I'M A COWBOY!!! Neer neer neer neer na-na neeeeer!" Awhile later, PJ told me that the guy bet him I couldn't get it signed. So what did I do? I sure did get that hat signed. I think Kevin Fowler thought I was like, his merch boy's groupie or something, so he did it very kindly. Number Three won his bet. :P Tell ME I can't do something.. Phive took some pics of me in the cowboy hat!!! YAYY I'm sure they're around the internet somewhere. There are forums of people talking about how I'm a cowboy now, and that I'm married to Travis Tritt. We loaded all of our gear into a truck thing [THANK YOU MIZELL!!!!] to be ready the next day, so we wouldn't have to deal with the cops to get in again. I saw ArcAttack do their thing, and it was awesome. The Kevin Fowler crew invited us to hang out with them in their bus, but we didn't.. We checked it out though.. Pretty sweet set-up. I gots to get me one of those.. DAAAAANG... Back to the hotel. The next day, we went and set up merch again.. It was nice and HOT! We saw a Grammy-winning Tejano artist play - freaking awesome... Some nice strong crew guys got me my own merch tent. :) Adam showed us to the VIP room. WOW. OH MAN. There was a REALLY cool metal drum island band playing and LOTS of GREAT FOOD!!! I ate so many shrimpies. Sorry guys, but you were delicious, and I was starving. They were like the size of my head. I have a small head, but that's big for a shrimpie. Everyone else was focusing their tummy power on the free booze, so I got all the food I wanted! SCORE! Suckaaaas... Three and I went to Coi's celebrity chef Hell's kitchen demonstration thing that night.. It was at what looked like a TV cooking show set! She showed everyone how to make these neat pepper things and an avocado crab dealio. Very nice, and very nummy. Her rep gave me a picture! :) She signed it to PJ and me. She's SO SWEEEEEET!!!! I guess she's from Austin. I told her that I'll sing for her anytime she'll cook for me!!! I've got to introduce her to Jonny Flash. Coi introduced me to a guy named Chef Husbands who has restaurants in Boston that we can eat at. I told him that we'd totally trade rock and roll for food. :) He seemed down for that. PJ met a really nice couple who bought him food! We ended up hanging out with them on the last day at their RV. A married couple - tugboat capn' and massage therapist soap makers. Their daughter is studying music biz. They were so kind to us. Right before I went to change for the show, this family of little me's appeared at the merch table - three adorable girls, all One-Eyed Doll'ed out in striped stockings and face paint. Wow. That made me feel so good. We'd never come even close to the island, so it was a relief to know that we had some fans. I found a nice bathroom to change in and met lots of cool girls. :) Bowling For Soup played right before us.. Their merch boy was nice. :P We played a short set on the very nice stage, manned by our beloved Roadway/Adam Brewer/Trey Edwards stage crew guys. Man, are they cool. The show was sweet, and we had a pretty good little crowd, considering it was too late for most of the families and rednecks who had left around nine.. The people who were still there were just a GREAT crowd. We loved on them so much!!! Lots of cool girls, and alot of staff took breaks to come out to the show.. After the show, we really took our time with people, and I gave everyone a smooch on the cheek and a poster. They were amazing.. Especially the little girls!!!! What rockers!!! Rah! We finally got out of there at who-knows-when.. My friend Mizell was working on the other stage, and we offered to help him break it down.. He said no way, so we went back to the hotel and got some sleepies. The next morning, we went to the beach and swam in the warm blue ocean.. Ahhh it was amazing. My body felt so right in that water. The sand was so hot that it burned our feet, and we had to run to the water!! And then back tot he car after!! I got a little sunburn! YAYY! I haven't turned colors in a long time! I'm an islander! We saw a little sharky, and I tried to capture it. I crept up on it, and SPLASHY!!!! My belly flop didn't work though, and he swam away, uncaptured. We left town around three and drove home. I made earrings on the way back.. Really cool skeleton and button ones.. I'll have some at the shows this weekend. All in all, a great weekend. Thanks to all our new fans and friends, Adam and Trey and the whole Roadway crew! We love you! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- READ ALL OF KIMBERLY'S TOUR BLOGS AND POST COMMENTS: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
