"Boynton man chosen as top 3 finalist for Bob Marley contest"

Bob Marley, the Jamaican reggae star lives on through his music and his foundation, 1Love, with a mission to do good in honor of Marley's vision for a better world.

The first Marley's Music Uprising song competition, sponsored by "anti-energy" drink Marley's Mellow Mood, is looking to discover the next great sound inspired by reggae and influenced by Marley.

The grand prize is a trip to Kingston, Jamaica to record at the legendary Tuff Gong studio (where Bob Marley recorded) and have a track produced by Stephen Marley, Bob Marley's son and a 10-time Grammy award-winning artist and producer.

"Our father's music inspires people around the world," Marley said. "With 'Uprising,' we carry on his spirit to support creativity and give voice to a new generation of artists that are following in his footsteps."

One of these up-and-coming artists is Boynton Beach resident Paul Anthony, 23, a business music graduate of Florida Atlantic University and a full-time musician with the band Fireside Prophets, a reggae fusion trio.

A top-three finalist in the competition, Anthony, who like Marley himself is Anglo-Jamaican, was selected immediately by Cedella and Ky-Mani Marley and the Marley family to be in the top 25 out of 500 submissions.

Fans voted online for the top three and will select the finalist later this month. The other top finalists include Papa Fish from Los Angeles and Indubious from Oregon.

Anthony comes from a musical family. His father, Paul Anthony, Sr., also a singer, knew Bob Marley in Jamaica and plays gigs around South Florida.

The younger Anthony's influences include his father who he said encouraged him to pursue his careeras a musician, and Bob Marley and his sons.

Anthony's songs, "Rudeboy Lover," "Other Side of Love" and "Light after Dark" incorporate reggae, pop and electronic dance music.

Cedella Marley, Bob Marley's daughter, who was part of the selection process, said, "Paul is very talented and has an eclectic style that I really like. He blends dance hall and reggae in a contemporary way. He sounds like somebody who just came out of Jamaica. I didn't delve into his bio; I just closed my eyes and listened to his sound."

Each contestant performs at a large music festival and Anthony was chosen to perform in June at the Electric Forest music festival in Rothbury, Mich.

The live performances are featured on the website where fans will elect a winning act for the grand prize Tuff Gong recording session.

"We want to embrace the community of up-and-coming artists who work so hard to have their talent and work recognized. It's a way for us to give back to today's youth," Cedella Marley said.

"I'm thankful to be in the top three finalists," Anthony said. "Fans will vote again by Aug. 25. Hopefully, I will go to Jamaica to record with Steve Marley. This will be one of the best things that could happen to me."

Bio

Hailing from Tropical Palm Beach FL the young, genre-bending Reggae music innovator known as “Paul Anthony Reggae” has been a champion on the Reggae scene in his city for 10+ years. He has graced the stage at some of Florida’s hottest venues, electrifying audiences from 200 to 20,000 with his energetic/engaging stage presence, smooth delivery, and impeccable lyrical content. Paul is well on his way to solidifying his place in the music industry as a leader of the new-school Reggae movement.

A top 3 Finalist in the Marley Uprising International Band Search, Paul Anthony rose to stardom after receiving local recognition through his works being featured on major radio stations in his city of Palm Beach as well as Nationally and Internationally. Cedella Marley, Daughter of Reggae Legend Bob Marley and C.E.O of Tuff Gong International said, “Paul is very talented and has an eclectic style that I really like. He blends Dancehall and Reggae in a contemporary way. He sounds like somebody who just came out of Jamaica.”

A true modern-day pioneer of Reggae, Paul’s sound is distinctively his own. He is a master at pushing the envelope with Reggae music while managing to stay true to his roots. His uncanny ability to successfully weave his authentic Jamaican sound with virtually any genre is only a minuscule feat compared to his captivating melodies and clever wordplay.

Paul comes from a mixed race household. His mother is Canadian and his Father is Jamaican. His Father Paul Anthony I, also known as “Pat Satchmo” in Jamaican Reggae circles, is Paul’s direct link to a Legacy of Reggae Roots. Satchmo is a well-known entertainer who recorded with Lee “Scratch” Perry in Jamaica during the early days of Reggae and performed alongside The Wailers on their 1975 tour in Toronto Canada. Paul cites his father as being his biggest inspiration to pursue his own path as young Reggae star.

With his rising prominence as one of today’s true Reggae music heavyweights, industry insiders have dubbed Paul “The New Voice of Reggae,” and while maintaining his usual humble temperament, he remarks “I’m prepared to set a new standard and leave my mark on musical history!”
