At only eighteen Paulina Jayne is on her way to becoming a country superstar. About to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA and already accepted to college where she will be majoring in music business this young and talented Detroit native is on the road for further success. Including headlining the premier of The Road To Faster Horses Series when it kicks off at St Andrews Hall later this month.

With one EP already under her belt and another on the way, Paulina has shared the stage with many big names in the industry including Sheryl Crow, Chase Rice, Ty Stone and Jerrod Niemann. HEAR got a chance to talk to Paulina about her music career thus far and what she has planned for her future. “I’ve had a lot going on in my life and I feel blessed. My most memorable highlight so far was opening for and meeting Sheryl Crow at DTE. She helped me realize that I shouldn’t be afraid to be authentic and people will like me for who I am.” Paulina told us that, “life isn’t easy for a regular teenage girl,” but imagine being in high school while juggling a singing career; though Paulina seems to have it well under control. “I don’t have anything to complain about, but it is tough coming home from a big show and then having to wake up to go to school on Monday. The biggest struggle for me is the transition between Paulina Jayne and Paulina at school because I have to be in a different element for both.”

This young singer and songwriter is working on her second EP. Paulina wants to incorporate more of the Detroit sound by fusing country with rock for a grittier sound. “I’m going for what I like to call an Urban-Country album. Combining country music that you’re used to with a rock sound, considering we are Detroit Rock City! I’m really excited about it.”

This is not Paulina’s first time playing St. Andrews Hall. She sold out the venue with the launch of her first EP and she’s excited to return. “One of the reasons I can’t wait for this show is that this is my favorite venue to play at.” She will be accompanied by annabelle road and matt austin who Paulina had nothing but good things to say about. “They are phenomenal musicians and friends of mine. Annabelle Road’s lead singer, Amanda, had such an impact on me when I opened for them. I’m really excited to see them all again.”

Following the success of the Faster Horses Music Festival in Brooklyn, MI last summer promoters are pulling out all the stops for The Road To Faster Horses Series. It will be just a taste of Country Music flavor coming to Michigan this year. The amount of things on the average high school senior's plate can be overwhelming. Figuring out college plans and final exams, not to mention the prom details like dresses and dates, can send any 18-year-old into a frenzy. Paulina Jayne, however, seems to be balancing all of that and a developing music career with plenty of grace.

The up and coming Detroit country artist will be playing at her favorite metro Detroit venue, St. Andrew's Hall on 3/29 with Annabelle Road and Matt Austin for the first show of Live Nation's Faster Horses Series.

"I love the staff, I love the stage, I love the crowd," Jayne says. "Everybody is just hyped and extremely excited." She's had a good time every time she's been to St. Andrew's, whether it's been performing herself, or seeing Kacey Musgraves or her favorite band, Blackberry Smoke.

Jayne has been writing music since she was a young kid. She started taking piano lessons and quickly learned to experiment with notes and chords. The first songs she wrote were classical, and she slowly began delving into other genres until country and the "good ol' three chords" really stuck with her. "I love the genre," she says. "It's where my heart is."

Jayne has accomplished quite a bit so far in her short career. She was invited by producer Toby Wright to audition for The Voice, which she took him up on at the beginning of February. She's been nominated for plenty of Detroit Music Awards, such as Best Songwriter, Best Song, Best Vocalist and Best Band. She's performed at WYCD's annual Downtown Hoedown, at Live Nation's 2013 Faster Horses Festival, opened for Ty Stone at the Fillmore, and Sheryl Crow at DTE Energy Music Theater, which she cites as the most exciting moment she's had so far in her career. She admires Crow's authenticity.

Though Jayne feels the strongest connection to country music, many artists of other genres inspire her, for that exact reason. If she could work with any artist, it would be Ray Charles.

"He did whatever he wanted," she says. "Once he had his fan base, he changed it up. His whole fan base was all about it. He wasn't confined to one genre at all."

Pink is another artist that Jayne would like to work with. "She is one of the most phenomenal performers," Jayne says of Pink's acrobatic sets.

Lately Jayne has been working with Emmy Award winning producer and songwriter Trey Bruce. He's taken her on as an artist in development and they've put together four songs so far. "I'm really excited about this new music," says Jayne. She describes the songs that may be released as either singles or part of an EP as a mix of Detroit rock and country.

Balancing a full-time job as a singer/songwriter/performer with high school doesn't come without its challenges, but Jayne manages to make it work. She's a successful student with her college plans set for the fall as well.

"High school is really important to my parents and to me," she says. "They've instilled in me that I have to maintain that 4.0 in order to follow my dream in music. Plus I really enjoy going to school and seeing my friends during the day."

For an aspiring country musician, there are few places better to be than Nashville, Tennessee. Jayne will be starting the next school year at Belmont University, studying music business, right in the heart of the city. "It's the land of record labels and publishing companies," she says. "I'll learn how to play the game."

In the meantime, Jayne will be performing throughout the summer, potentially with another spot at Faster Horses for her second year in a row.

Paulina Jayne is Detroit’s offering of a new brand of country music that she has coined “urban country.” It’s an edgier, Detroit-rock style of country music that this wild, golden-locked 18-year-old ingenue writes and performs herself.

Now in her last year of high school, Paulina Jayne – as she is professionally known – has opened for Sheryl Crow at the DTE Music Theater with an audience of 6,000 people; shared the marquee with country legends Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert for the Watershed Music Festival at the Gorge in Washington State; has opened for Chase Rice to a packed house at Live Nation’s St. Andrews Hall; is the subject of a documentary feature film currently in production; and was gifted an invitation by Grammy Award-winning producer Toby Wright to attend
a private audition for NBC’s hit show The Voice in Music City, U.S.A. – Nashville, Tenn.

Paulina Jayne, the student from Grosse Pointe, has a 4.0 grade point average and was captain of her basketball team. She was elected to homecoming court and has two proactive and involved parents, Deb and Harold, who keep her grounded. A typical evening at the family homestead? Homework followed by household chores. When musical inspiration strikes, chore duties are put on pause and an instrument
– piano, drums or guitar – can be heard from across the house as Jayne works out a riff or bridge. Once the muse has been satisfied, mom reminds her daughter where the broom is and chore duties continue, though the playful teenager might choose to mix it up a bit by putting on her mother’s
dress coat to do them in.

“I have a constant soundtrack in my mind,” she says, and it often gets her into trouble at school. “I get passes to the girls’ bathroom during school, so that I can record new songs on my iPhone,” she says. “I need to
get the song out. It’s distracting me from paying attention in class.”

She credits her mother, who is also a singer and a classically trained pianist herself, for her love of music. “I really fell into music because of my mom. It was more of a forced stay. My mom made me play piano,” Jayne
says. “I originally hated it, but then I grew to love the instrument, and the guitar became my favorite.”
Jayne has been writing music since she was 9 years old and has over 200 songs in her arsenal. Her first professional gig was the Stars and Stripes Festival in downtown Mt. Clemens. “There were a bunch of different acts there. I was 13, and it was a blast,” she explains. She signed with a management team at age 15 and has been playing locally as well as a few national shows – the rest, she says, is history.

With three music videos under her belt, the first, “Get Back on Your Feet,” garnered nominations for a 2013 Detroit Music Award and the 2013 Uptown Film Festival. It also received a 2013 Student Emmy Award as it
was produced by Madonna University’s Capstone Film Class.

Jayne recently returned to Nashville where she has been working with Emmy Award-winning songwriter and music producer Trey Bruce on her upcoming EP and her audition for The Voice. Her position on the
opportunity? “Whatever God has planned will come to be,” she says.

What resonates for everyone who meets Paulina Jayne is her calm, down-to-earth demeanor. “I think a defi ning moment for me was learning from Sheryl Crow that it’s extremely important to be authentic. We were
back stage at the DTE concert. I was being introduced to Kid Rock, Sheryl’s band, music people, and when I was brought to Sheryl, she was Skyping with her kids. She didn’t have any makeup on. She was wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt,” Jayne recalls. “It was a real moment for me. It showed me that these people are just people. Authenticity is the most important thing.”

Next up for this fast-rising Detroit country singer? Paulina Jayne is looking forward to this next semester at school where she is taking a class on music production; her upcoming performances with Live Nation; working
with her new management team at The 513 Agency; shooting a music video for her song “Hello Saturday Night;” a spring break trip to Florida with her girlfriends; graduating this summer; more writing with Trey Bruce; coaching with Herschel Boone; filming with her documentary crew and attending Belmont University in the fall where she’ll study music business.

"I like to have that gritty rock sound. I'm not afraid to say something — be bold," said 18-year-old Paulina Jayne Perakis.

Her gritty urban country rock sound resulted in a February trip to Nashville, Tenn., to perform for NBC's "The Voice" television show's producers.

A resident of the City of Grosse Pointe, Paulina Jayne, her stage name, didn't have to wait in a line with thousands of hopefuls. Instead she, and a preselected 100 other musicians, sang before a producer and a camera. Four songs were prepared by each and Paulina Jayne said she sang Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" and AVICII's "Wake Me Up." The number of tunes completed depended on how much of the personality you gave off, she explained.

"I played for a medium amount of time. I wasn't cut on the spot. The producers did say 'hope to see you again,'" she said and is taking that as a positive sign.

To date, Paulina Jayne hasn't heard if she has been selected to appear in next season's segments. In the meantime, the high school senior is preparing for two March performance dates, a fundraiser at Brownell Middle School and a May performance in Ann Arbor, as well as high school graduation before heading to Nashville mid-summer. There she is to write songs under the tutelage of her producer and country music songwriter, Trey Bruce.

"I don't write anything down," she said of her creative process. "The melody comes to me and I have to capture it in that moment on my phone or in the studio," she said.

Following weeks of song writing, Paulina Jayne said, she will attend classes at Nashville's liberal arts Belmont University, known for its music curriculum, and major in music business.

"It's on music row. Number one hit song writers are teachers of the song-writing classes," she said.

Does she need help writing new tunes because the blonde-haired former high school basketball player, who maintains a 4.0 GPA, began writing songs at the age of 9?

"There is more to learn. Song writing needs to be sharper. The more you write the easier it be-comes," Paulina Jayne said. "Writing is my first love. The singing part came later.

"My first song was a classical piece. I was sitting at the piano. I had learned Bach pieces. My mom came into the room (and) asked me what I was playing."

Paulina Jayne admitted it wasn't anything like Bach but her mother, who also plays piano, as did both her grandmothers, encouraged her to continue. An hour later the piece was complete, thus her initial entry into music composition. Switching to write urban country music "just happened. I wrote less classical and more singable (music)," she said.

She continued playing the piano for six years. "I grew to love the instrument," she said.

In the seventh grade, she took her talent to the middle school stage and performed "Butterfly," a song about breaking out of the cocoon. In the eighth grade, she taught herself to play guitar, followed by learning to play the ukulele. Paulina Jayne is continuing to broaden her musical abilities by learning to play drums and bass and work with her vocal coach and mentor Detroit's Herschel Boone.

Since "Butterfly," her abilities have taken flight, saying she now writes about "greater" things that appeal to a wide demographic area.

"I grab inspiration from different places," she said. "I always have a few songs in the oven."

Though chronologically young, Paulina Jayne has made enough of a mark in the music industry to be the subject of a documentary by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Jennifer Champagne with Milake Pictures.

Paulina Jayne said of Champagne: "Doing a couple music videos with Jennifer I grew to love and appreciate the art. She followed me in Nashville."

"Paulina is an incredible talent. (She) is bright. She has a huge future in front of her. Paulina the high school student, as opposed to Paulina Jayne the professional, is pretty profound," Champagne said.

Paulina Jayne, named for a Czech-born model, said she realizes not many teenagers have the experiences she has, entering the professional world as a teenager, and does miss some of the normal high school highlights. Though she had to give up basketball due to knee surgeries, she said she still supports her fellow students, including attending basketball games.

"I can't complain about missing things. I don't get to go to all the dances but I get to be in Nashville and writing with some awesome people," Paulina Jayne said.

Success is a combination of talent, mentors, persistence, as well as family support.

"Without my mom, I couldn't go to all these gigs. My parents have been supportive. Being with family and friends is right below music," she said of her passions. "They (relationships) are the most important to me, to build and nurture. They are the most important."

Therefore, before she moves to Nashville, there will be some time to spend with her family, consisting of mother, Deborah O'Brien, father, Harold Perakis, and older brother, Straton, as well as her circle of friends.

However, "Music is my main extra curricular. It takes all my time when I'm not in school."

Raised in the Midwest, and in particular metro Detroit, has been an asset according to Paulina Jayne.

"Artists from Detroit are respected. Country music has a big market here," she said.

She has been a part of the Detroit Hoedown, nominated for best music video at the 2013 Detroit Music Awards and Uptown Film Festival and earned the 2013 Student Emmy music video for "Get Back on Your Feet." Her name has appeared on the marquee with singers Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bently, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Hunter Hayes and Blackberry Smoke. She has opened for Sheryl Crow, Chase Rice, Ty Stone and Jerrod Niemann performing her original songs.

Once you hear her sing one of her original songs, it’s easy to forget that Paulina Jayne is only 18 and a high school senior. But the minute she steps on the stage with her 100-watt smile, she becomes the consummate professional.

Jayne began taking piano lessons when she was 6 years old and wrote her first song when she was only 9. She has now written over 200 songs in several different genres — although she’s most comfortable with country music, which is what brought her into the national spotlight. She has performed nationwide and has shared the bill with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton and Ty Stone.

When she opened for Sheryl Crow at the DTE Music Theatre in 2012, Jayne caught the attention of the Capstone Film Class from Madonna University and their executive producer, Jennifer Champagne. They produced her first music video, which was released Thanksgiving Eve at the Magic Bag in Ferndale.

That night, during a break, one of her neighbors said that Paulina’s piano playing of classical music first made her weep when the girl was only 12 years old. The woman admitted that the weeping is mostly in the past, but she did say that she always gets a lump in her throat when she sees how well her young neighbor performs.

Jayne’s much anticipated EP was released at the end of her junior year at the Shelter at St. Andrews Hall. The EP features many world-class musicians who have performed with the likes of Kid Rock, Aerosmith, Peter Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The preliminary talk in the industry indicates continued success. Jayne has recently been invited to audition for NBC’s The Voice.

Jayne has managed to keep a perfect 4.0 GPA while juggling her musical career along with typical teenage activities.
