"Red Ember: Album Review"

Red Ember
Wakes In Shadow. Lies By Fire
(SELF-RELEASED)

Straight from the hotbed of bluegrass, this band from Paducah aspires to be more than the average folk outfit. Though their instrumentation is rooted in folk, with banjo, mandolin and resonator guitar, Red Ember’s opposing influences shine through. You’ll hear it throughout Wakes in Shadow. Lies by Fire, a debut full-length that bottles the vigor of its six members. And they can sing! Strong, confident harmonies are a staple of the group, but it doesn’t outshine the proficiency they display on strings. Sometimes it’s simply in the moment, such as the string-hopping “3:32 AM” that fades in over the banter of a bustling room, a fitting time and place for them to smear quick-picked acoustic guitar with funk bass licks. The best instant comes without words in “Monsters,” which quickly escapades through acoustic tapping and banjo accents like an enchanting string choir. Get familiar, because Red Ember is the type of progressive folk that demands attention in Kentucky and beyond. —Lara Kinne - Lara Kinne - LEO Weekly, Louisville

Bio

Formed in Paducah, KY on Memorial Day weekend of 2012, Coming from an easily overlooked market that has given birth to Bluegrass, and cornerstone contemporary bands like Cage The Elephant, My Morning Jacket, and Nickel Creek; Red Ember looks to capture hearts in the same genre-bending, novel-yet-universal, captivating sound. Folk instrumentation is a focal point around Alex Coltharp (banjo), Justin Doss (Mandolin), but the band brings so much more. Funk and Jazz elements pour out of Brad Hammack (Bass), while the electric edge is crafted by Foster Stacy (Synthesizer and Percussion), and Ryan Cothron (Electric Guitar), then finished with a large load on the shoulders of metal styling Alex Riley (Rhythm Guitar). The elements exist for a great instrumental band, but huge vocals swimming in emotional harmonies pour out of the group around heart-felt songwriting to offer the full package. The group is easily capable of hitting any genre skillfully, and still settles in an individual niche that is cant be replicated.

Once decided upon a moniker that reflected their passionately fueled compositions and eclectic yet energetic personalities, Red Ember began to accept gigs in all of the live music venues of their home base; easily spotted on stage by themselves or with many of their other musician colleagues about town. Less than a year later, they have expanded to Nashville, Tennessee and were featured acts at ROMP, Sounds on Dumont, IBMM, Paper City Music Festival, LAMF, MPMF, and were crowned the winning performer at the 2014 Hard Rock Cafe Nashville Showcase. Focusing on original songs and the occasional well known favorite, ranging from bluegrass standards to re-envisioned heavy metal string breakers, Red Ember is notable for their attention to the quality of their shows, and a knack for connecting with crowds of all demographics.

Currently the band's LP produced by Kevin Ratterman (Wax Fang, Twin Limb) release is scheduled for fall 2016 as a follow up to the successful firs album, Wakes in Shadow, Lies by Fire, and transitioning into a full time touring group, based out of Kentucky.
