Words could never explain the way I feel for You
I’m trying to put the words to these feelings
You sweep me off my feet
This romance was meant to be
In Your arms of love, I am safe forever

You and I will walk this path together
With You by my side, I am sure to never fall
You capture my heart, I am drawn to You forever
In Your presence all I know is peace

Teach me to love like You do
Let me be a new being in You
I am wholly content to sit by Your side
‘cause in Your presence I am restored

No one loves me the way that You do
I’m falling over again for You
No one loves me the way that You do
I’m falling over again for You.

“I wanted something unique, something that would express my heart passionately and though this song doesn’t do justice ‘cause I simply cannot find the words to describe my eternal lover, Jesus” Rita told us over the weekend, referring to her song “In Your Presence”. Some people have described this song as a rival to Rita’s song “Beautiful” which is also a love song to God. “Beautiful” appears on her first album of the same name, it was released in 2007 under El-Sound Studios. “In Your presence” appears on “Anna”, Rita Pam’s yet-to-be-released second album.

She went on to say: “I love worship songs and Hymns but I also love songs that have depth, that express deep feelings for Jesus. I see Jesus as my best friend, as my lover and this is how I address Him in my songs. This is how it will always be”

What inspired you to write “In Your Presence”?

Rita Pam: I was in Zaria at the time to record a few songs for my second project and I was finishing up this song that very evening I was to record. The words are straight-forward and it’s a simple song. I just wanted something that would express my love for Jesus and I deliberately had it in mind to make it sound so romantic…. It does sound like a love story between two lovers and yes, it is, only this time, it’s between Jesus and I.

How can you compare this song to your other songs?

Rita Pam: I don’t really compare my songs as most of my songs are love songs to Jesus. But I really bond with this one ‘cause I poured out my feelings for Jesus, wholly! I held back nothing. There was no thought of ‘How would people feel, should I mention romance between Jesus and I?’ No! I let it all out.

You recently said you’d like your new song “Veni Jesu Amor Mi/Tantum Ergo” to be played on the day of your funeral… we’re just wondering, why not “In Your Presence”?

Rita Pam: As much as I love “In Your presence”, I’d very much want “Veni Jesu Amor Mi/Tantum Ergo” to be played on the day of my funeral. I am not expecting a state funeral. Not at all. But even if privately, I’d like to hear this song when I die ‘cause it would be a song I’d want to sing as I leave this life and when I come before God because the lyrics hold so much meaning for me, they COMPLETELY express my heart’s desire. They sum up what I’m on earth doing and it is really intense, it is a song I’d love to sing to Jesus when I meet Him face to face….

This would sound so strange to some, they’d say ‘While others are picking their wedding song, you're picking your funeral song’ Don’t you find that quite alarming?

Rita Pam: I always say this, death is a reality and we should live everyday preparing for our encounter with Jesus. Preparing for the afterlife should even be what people should be doing as after death, there’d be no coming back to earth… we should prepare extensively so that when we breathe our last, we’d be sure where we’re going.

How would you describe your relationship with Jesus?

Rita Pam: Brilliant! Totally deep and intense. I don’t just talk about Him, I live for Him. Every single second, minute, hour, day of my life is lived for Jesus. I don’t take a break! I will not take a break and give the devil entry… and I think this is the way we all should live! I mean, when Jesus is your best friend and you two are so close, where’d the devil enter from? Nowhere!
