"Singer Solomon Thompson starts the Mardi Gras party"

He's known as "The Party Starter," and now Mobile singer Solomon Thompson has delivered an upbeat good-time anthem just in time for the start of the Port City's Carnival season.

"Block off the streets/ crank up the beats/ it ain't nothing but a party y'all/ so go move your feet," Thompson calls in "Mardi Gras," his brand-new contribution to the Fat Tuesday playlist. Just to make sure no one misses the point, Thompson released a video for the song over the weekend. Like the song, it makes the point that what goes on around the parades – tailgating, neighborhood get-togethers, dancing – provides just as much fun as the parades themselves.

In that approach, the song is squarely in the tradition of local standards such as 2 Major Twinz' "Mardi Gras Song," with its chants of "Moon Pie, Moon Pie," and Rich Boy's "Boy Looka Here," which made it onto Billboard's hot R&B/hip-hop singles & tracks chart a few years back.

The track, with its grabby bass line and engaging vocals, seems well suited for any sidewalk DJ to spin along the parade route, and that's no accident at all.

Thompson said he started performing hip-hop around 2003, then gradually shifted more into singing. He's had particular success in the Southern Soul genre, building a growing regional reputation and doing well on specialized genre charts. Despite that recognition, he prefers not to pigeonhole himself as a hip-hop or blues artist.

"I had a song that's called 'Time 2 Party.' It's pretty hot among soul-blues markets," Thompson said. "'Time to Party' is like my signature song, it's my introduction song." Late last year, he had a conversation with a DJ affiliated with the parading group the Mystic DJ Riders; he was trying to take 'Time to Party' and remix it for Mardi Gras.

"I said, you ain't got to do that, I'd just rather make another song for Mardi Gras," Thompson said. He got to work over the Christmas season, with help from producer Ron G. at Blue Magic Studios.

"Everything that goes on in Mardi Gras, everything you see with your eyes, that's what the song needed to talk about," Thompson said. "I wanted you to hear all that, I wanted you to see all that in the video."

With all the video's images of friendly celebration, he also wanted to make another point: "I look at it like this," he said, "it shows we can all have a good time and come together without violence."

For Thompson, the song serves as a personal kick off to a busy season. He expects to play his share of Mardi Gras gigs in a variety of settings. "They been calling lately. Since I released the song, they've been calling," he said. And this spring, he hopes to release the follow-up to his previous album, "History."

He's not sure yet what this one will be titled, but knows what mood he's going for. "It's going to be something pertaining to having a good time," he said.
