"Super Snake (Jerry of Trophy Scars) releasing debut LP (stream “Big Seize”)"

Morristown, NJ’s Trophy Scars started out as a challenging post-hardcore band, ended up as a bluesy psychedelic rock band, and touched on plenty of interesting and unpredictable sounds in between. They took a break after their 2015 shows (they’re not broken up though), and singer Jerry Jones is now focusing solely on his band Super Snake, which formed back in 2012 and have a couple EPs out. They’re set to release their debut album, Leap of Love, on Valentine’s Day (2/14). They recorded it with Kevin Antreassian, who previously worked with Trophy Scars and recently joined The Dillinger Escape Plan as a guitarist (and plays on their 2016 album Dissociation).

We’re premiering the album’s lead single “Big Seize,” which is a heavy dose of doomy psych, complete with wah solos and the Tom Waits-esque growl that Jerry Jones adopted with late-period Trophy Scars. It’s a hell of a track, and you can check it out below. Jerry talked to us a bit about the new song, and also the state of Trophy Scars and the different goals of that band and this one: - Brooklyn Vegan

"Album Stream: Super Snake – ‘Leap of Love’"

Love is a funny thing, as they say. It is both vulnerable and dangerous and ‘Leap of Love’ aims to express the more unsavory aspects of the sentiment. The album is composed of vignettes and stories exposing treacherous ideas about the power, obsession, and dangers of love. The overall impression of love is ambiguous as the narrator from song to song draws his or her own conclusion as what to make of it. ‘Spirit Cave’ details the story of a murderous widow reaping the life insurance from her ex-husband as the narrator gushes about how much he has fallen for her and applauds her ambitions. ‘Cecilia’ is written from the perspective of a gay rodeo clown who maddeningly envies a female counterpart as she sleeps with all the bull riders he has fallen in love with. ‘Hot Pavement’ is a snap shot of delightful fascination behind the closet blinds of a serial stalker who absolutely loves what he does. ‘LIE4U’: the laments of a deadbeat father aggressively apologizing and eviscerating his ex-wife. ‘Sister Margaret,’ a nun laughing all the way to hell. And there’s plenty more uniquely grotesque characters littered throughout ‘Leap of Love.’ The facets are many, the specifics are gritty, and the outcomes are mostly violent. Spattered with black humor, Burroughs-esque psychedelia, and tongue(firmly)-in-cheek philosophy, we can help you take the leap of love.” - New Noise Magazine

Bio

Super Snake was founded in a barn on the top of a hill amidst the forest of the Watchung Reservation in 2012. They quickly released two EP's, "Rider" and "Summer Girls" both recorded by John Ferrara (Trophy Scars) at Portrait Studios in Northern NJ. These EP's laid the foundation for the future of the band- driven, heavy, stoner rock with a pop sensibility. They also garnered a significant amount of local attention, having been asked to be direct support for acts such as Andrew WK and Fuck Face Unstoppable (Bam Margera, CKY). Around this time Guitarist Greg "Old Craig" Kautz left the band to pursue touring full time with his other band, I Am Heresy. He was replaced by two guitarists, Joe Laga and Pete August (The Banner). Super Snake began extensively writing their first LP. Founding guitarist John Pinho left the group and Pete and Joe's fondness of classic rock and psychedelia began to shine through in their new sound. Kevin Antressian (Dillinger Escape Plan) was tasked with recording Leap Of Love. The band chose to record the LP on a hunting ranch located deep inside the Smoky Mountains in Virginia. Tracking the record outside of the comfort of a studio lent a hand in shaping its sound. Super Snake were without distraction or outside contact for 10 days. Shortly before releasing the record longtime drummer Vincent Fiore left the band, he was replaced by Nick Del Virginia who had played in previous bands with Pete and Joe. Super Snake successfully released Leap Of Love at Mexicali Live in Teaneck NJ and plans for a fall tour in support of the album are in the works. Singer Jerry Jones (Trophy Scars) conceptualized this album with lyrics telling tales of love gone wrong. They have begun writing their next full length inside of their little barn in the forests of New Jersey and will no doubt out do themselves.
