"Swami Gone Bananas are Atlanta's 'Good Times Icons'"

For over 20 years, Swami Gone Bananas has proven to be the city's finest and most watched 'cover' band. Even though they do many of their own songs, Swami still likes to call them a cover group. Swami (founder Mike Schulman) formed this band after friend and Grateful Dead founder Jerry Garcia died in 1995. Swami was (in 1995) and still is a graphic designer for the Dead with over 100 T-Shirt and stage pass designs. Swami always said that the Grateful Dead were the best cover group of all time. When Jerry died Swami formed Swami Gone Bananas to 'cover' the Atlanta area. The Swami Band played the "Circus Tent' at Buckhead's 'Mike & Angelos' for almost 10 years becoming an institution in Atlanta's entertainment district. When nightclubs were replaced with city expansion, Swami Gone Bananas moved to Atlanta's famous Northside Tavern. With years of performances in the Tavern under their belt, Swami Gone Bananas continues to be Atlanta's "Good Times Icons'. -

Bio

Atlanta native, artist, and musician Mike "Swami" Schulman has been a radio personality since the early 90's. He called himself "Swami Gone Bananas" on the radio, and the name was born. Mike's radio show, Swami After Dark, ran for 7 years on WATB1420am.
Being a fine graphic artist of the 60's style, he was noticed by Phil Lesh, and began working for the Grateful Dead in 1992.
Swami always said that the Grateful Dead were the best cover band ever, so when Jerry Garcia died in 1995, Swami put "Swami Gone Bananas" together to 'cover' them.
The band has gone full circle since then, writing their own songs, becoming one of the South's fine nightclub acts, and playing festivals all over the Southeast.
