The Maytags

You might know The Maytags as Dustin Smith and the Sunday Silos, but don’t get them confused. Smith’s new endeavor moves away from his token folk vibe and adds a bit of rock and roll to the act. The 6-piece band still takes a cue from American Folk music—along with a bit of Soul and R&B—so don’t think you’re getting a whole new line-up with the name change. In Smith’s words: “We have four-part male harmonies that make you feel like it’s 1972 and songs that make you want to roll your windows down and feel human again.” In fact, “feeling human again” seems to be the band’s tagline. A fair descriptor, if you’ve previously seen the live energy that comes with Smith and his entourage live.

Maytags may be a new name to the Des Moines scene, but the sound is an extension of a well-loved set that got people going without much persuasion from Smith. Lucky for us, we can expect to hear the first EP from The Maytags in Fall 2014. True to Smith’s southern charm, the new release, “Nova,” was created at an Analog Studio called The Bomb Shelter in Nashville—of Alabama Shakes and Hurray for the Riff Raff fame.
