"The Rhythm and Beards Live on WFAA Good Morning Texas"

McKinney's Own " Rhythm and Beards" Perform - WFAA Channel 8

"Let's Grow Old Together..."

As a former touring musician, I’ve come across a lot of different musicians and bands, as well as many different personalities along the way. I’ve shared the stage with some bands who don’t say a peep to me, play their set and hide in the green room. One thing a lot of musicians and bands struggle with is connecting with fans, as well as the artists that they are sharing the stage with. I’ve seen it all. Some great, and some just downright off-putting.

I did not have that problem with The Rhythm and Beards. I walked into Spoons on the square Friday night, and right up to band frontman and rhythm guitarist, Kyle Brooks, and introduced myself. I have never met an artist that outgoing and friendly in my entire existence in the music scene. It’s almost like I already knew him and we jumped right into conversation. Prior to their set, I grew to learn how dedicated and on the same page these guys are in their pursuits. Their downright brotherly bond and the ability to connect with their supporters is off the charts. The chemistry is there, and anyone who gets the opportunity to meet and watch these guys play will be able to tell rather quickly. They are in this for all the right reasons.

There’s nothing more personal and fun than a good hometown show, and that’s exactly what this was. Brooks and his band mates, Ben Martinec- Lead Guitar, Dorian Lamb- Bass, and Nate Morris- Drums played for about an hour and a half to two hours for an all ages, all walks of life, crowd. I can appreciate bands that appeal to all. A lot of bands have a real niche following, but these guys are all in, for all to hear.

I was particularly how fond of how The Rhythm & Beards managed to bring out their full stage presence on such a small stage. There are a lot of bands who let small venues paralyze their capabilities. This did not stop these boys. Through the entire set, Brooks remained animated, reminding me of classic rock legend, Joe Cocker with his flailing arms and bassist, Dorian Lamb leaving the stage to let his little boy play a few notes on his bass. This really resonated with me, as a new father. Witnessing this interaction gave me something to look forward to as a musical dad.

The set was a combination of original material from their Texas Souls album, which goes well with Australian group John Butler Trio and San Angelo, TX natives Los Lonely Boys, and a very well done series of cover songs by notable legends such as Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, John Mayer, and Steve Miller Band.

Brooks further proved their ability to connect with his closing remark “Let’s grow old together! You, Me, and these songs! Good night!”

This really struck a chord with me (no pun intended), and for those of you who haven’t seen these guys rock your McKinney world yet, your next chance is November 7 at Cafe Malaga!

Bio

Music above all; that is how The Beards live. The result of over 10 years experience in the Dallas music scene and a variety of influences - a true passion for music can be felt with every note. Nate Morris delivers driving, powerful drum lines backed up by in-your-face, funky bass tones provided by Dorian Lamb. Together, they forge the rhythm; fitting of the beards they don. Ben Martinec commands the lead guitar with blues-fueled riffs and face melting deliveries. Mix in the powerful, soulful vocals and commanding stage presence of Kyle Brooks; it all comes together to form a Tour de Force to be reckoned with. You have to see it to be it. Get your beard on!
