"Thelvnguage/The Textiles @ Pianos"

Headlining the show was Thelvnguage, which I believe is still pronounced “The Language.” The first song sounded like the soundtrack to a 70’s era porno or blacksploitation film, courtesy of the scratch-picked guitar and wah pedal effect. Now maybe it would be fairer to say, “like every signature funk and soul jam of that era,” but something about the playful nature and moustache on the band leader, who was a that moment on guitar, made me believe the former description is valid.

After the first track, he quickly jumped behind the keyboard and remained there for the duration of their set.

Much of it felt like an extended jam session. Many of their songs had little to no words. Clearly everybody in the band knew their instruments well enough to vamp on whichever key the audience suggested. The front man behind the keys rarely stayed quiet, even on instrumentals, coaxing the audience to move.

On songs where he did sing, his voice was lithe and clean. It didn’t have the robustness necessary to fill the room, which isn’t to say it didn’t have presence. It sounded like he was perpetually smiling as he sang and that was probably because he was. His exuberance and the band’s energy were contagious. The crowd danced contentedly through out the entire set, which included an extra 5 minutes because the sound guys enjoyed them so much.

"thelvnguage to bring the funk to Rockwood Music Hall 5/12"

If you’ve been on the hunt for “a major funk odyssey,” then thelvnguage just might be your dream band. The NYC-based four-piece combines thick and creamy funk with some serious psych vibes, but wraps it all up in a neat, indie-pop package. Their latest single busts out the jams with major disco guitar chops and the blare of that delicious old-school organ sound, and features singer, Rob Van Zandt’s svelte vocals. But our favorite track is the instrumental, "Something Ellis Said," from last year's "SmoothC@" single, streaming below. Bio

thelvnguage is a 4-piece experimental jazz-funk band out of the Bronx, NY. The band originated in 2015 as a recording project from a tiny bedroom-studio, consisting of only two members (Rob & Michael) writing songs of several genres just to hit record and move on to the next project. In 2016, the group was then extended to a 'band' mentality by adding a rhythm section (Peter and Vinny) and expanding their writing capacity to unlimited bounds.

If you've ever seen thelvnguage perform live, then you can understand that this isn't an ordinary act you catch when there's nothing better to do; this is a band that engages an infectious 'switch' in their audience that forces anyone listening to move. Their intricate style combines a Swampers-style rhythm approach with a blend of jam-band tendancies, all while incorporating tasteful shifts of instrumentals in between each song.

Currently, they're set to release their first record in May 2017, while being backed on live-jams and a couple singles released on bandcamp. Keep an eye out for this unique group charging aggressively out of the Bronx.
