Tyro Marks

Tyro Marks puts to song the experiences that touch each of us on our own journeys from childhood to adulthood. Sometimes bittersweet, sometimes joy-infused, the band’s universally appealing music comes from a place of nostalgia.

One-half Steven Cohen, the other half, Laura Torma, Tyro Marks was born in Brooklyn in 2007. Steven Cohen, vocalist, guitarist and songwriter, was first inspired to put together the duo while driving cross-country from Arizona. Stopping in dusty old towns along the way, on warm, quiet nights under the Western stars, he sat with his guitar, his notepaper and pencil and sketched out his retrospectives on life and love. So much of what Steven wrote would become material for Iowa, Tyro Marks’ debut CD, released in 2010. When Steven met Laura Torma, opera, folk, gospel and pop chameleon, at a karaoke competition in 2007, Steven had found the vocalist who would round out the sound he was searching for.

Tyro Marks is a down-to-earth music collaboration that’s winning over audiences who’ve likened spending an evening with them to “curling up in the backseat of your parents’ station wagon and listening to you favorite tunes for miles and miles.”
