Hey Universol, for those new to the name, tell the readers about your movement.
My movement is fast and furious. My movement is progressive. I'm looking ahead at the long term affect I can have on the music business, but at the same time keeping myself grounded into what is happening now. I never waste a beat or a breath, and make sure I'm moving forward with every step. That's my movement.
This is your 3rd mixtape in the last 2 years, talk about your creative approach to your new release.
For this release, everything was done in the studio. We would do four to six hour blocks, where Rickochae would be working on a beat and I would write the song as he was putting it together. Once he finished the beat he would give it to me to hear in the headphones while he started the next track. I would finish the song and start writing to the next track. When we would get towards the end of each session, we would at the very least lay down the hooks. After that I would just come back to the studio and lay all the verses. This time around, we just made sure to not over think it and have fun.
What makes this mixtape differ from the last 2?
Well the first one, The "Kokky" Mixtape was over other peoples tracks, "Wonder Boy Digital" we flipped Stevie Wonder samples, and this one hear we just had fun and brought that Stank to the music. For the "Kokky" joint I wanted people to get familiar with some of my previous work. With "Wonder Boy Digital" I wanted everyone to take heed to my lyrical dexterity. As far as "Put Some Stank On It" is concerned, I just wanted to make some Funky Music. I was really focused on creating great songs and memorable moments for this project.
Who are some of the producers and artists you have featured on the cd?
The usual suspects Rickochae and Neve on production. We've been doing some really great work in the last few years, so I ran with the same crew when it comes to production. We're trying to crack the code and brand our style of music. As far as artist, no one. I do have DJ Stylus on the cut for "Let the People Know". Other than that, Bedtyme 357 doing the hosting.
What can true hip hop fans experience while listening?
They will get to experience true Hip Hop. All the things that make Hip Hop in it's purest form so great; the originality, the creativity, the innovation, the unwillingness to conform into what everyone else is doing. I'm smacking the listener in the mouth with some Soulful Syrupy Stank, some Home Grown Funk, some Hardcore Hip Hop, from the word "Go!".
What is Universol doing to keep relevant in the game and stand out amongst the saturation?
I keep myself relevant by making relevant music, first and foremost. There are plenty people out here saying they're making music now a day, so there is definitely no shortage. Some of it is really good, and some of it is really bad. I'm taking the extra effort to not only create music but to create moments for my listeners. create an experience for my concert go-ers. I also take the time to have a relationship with fans of my music. This allows me to know what they like or don't like, and cater to them. This is the New Music Industry, so the Artist to Fan relationship is a two way street. I talk, they listen. They talk, I listen.
Whats next on your agenda?
For right now. My main focus is getting out of the house and on the road, touring. That's where I can really separate myself from the rest of the pack.
