"Red Legs - Combative Words (EP)"

Indie rockers Red Legs come out fists ready to fight with their latest release, Combative Words. “In Hours of Fever” opens the album with a somber, soulful plea for the monster under the bed to stay away, a feeling all too familiar to listeners at the end of a tumultuous year.

The song moves like a hymn, a soft prayer of preparation before the real fight begins. “Punch Back” crashes into focus to recapture the energy the band demonstrates on their last release, 2015’s Influencer. “It’s a senseless attack, honey you be sure to bite back,” vocalist Logan Bailey cautions.

“New Rome” features some of the best drum work, with light percussive elements driving the verses and bigger crashes to bring the soaring chorus to full power. Both songs highlight the festival-style singalong savvy the band has, filled with “whoa, ohs” and airy guitar riffs, all crowd pleasing tactics.

“Surgery” finds the band moving back to their roots as an alternative rock band with less melodic riffs filling out the early sections before blending the old with a little bit of the new. This blend easily proves to be their most versatile song on the EP, with vocals to remind you of Dave Grohl’s as Bailey sings, “No, I’m not dead yet/Stitch me up.”

“Satellite” closes this release, and its placement feels perfect. It stands out as the most powerful track on the short EP. Bailey hits his strongest vocal moments as he sings, “You can be my satellite and guide me home,” capturing the listener’s desire to hear more.

The EP is short and sweet, and its powerful energy hits the right spots for anyone looking for feel-good dance rock. The band demonstrates considerable growth, and leaves room at the end for fans’ eagerness to want more. - Skip Fiction

""Punch Back" Video Premiere"

We’re honored to premiere “Punch Back,” the brand new video from Red Legs featuring the lead single off their new EP, Combative Words.

“Punch Back” sees Red Legs adding some grit and aggression to the brand of pop-influenced rock they’ve been honing for the past few years. Vocalist Logan Bailey shines on the new track, using his voice to drive home the emotion of the track and the honesty of the lyrics.

Check out the video directed by Jordan Parham.

Red Legs launched from the Grand Rapids music scene in mid-2013 with their first official EP The Take All. Their sprawling rock and increasingly active calendar over the next year garnered them attention from magazines like Revue and Recoil, the latter of which naming them the “#1 artist to watch in 2015.”

The group didn’t take it lightly, entering RiverCity Studios in the spring of 2015, releasing their debut full-length Influencer to a sold out show in Grand Rapids that June. MLive wrote that the album was “…a new step for Red Legs…veering away from edgier rock and stepping into more melodic territory with soaring guitars and sweeping instrumental backups.”

Vocalist/guitarist Logan Bailey’s lyrics cover topics ranging from Charles Dickens and his home state of Michigan (“Copperfield & Roses” , “Lake Country”), to personal reflections on adulthood and mortality (“White Sheets”, “Cashew”). “The goal is to try and connect with as many people as possible,” drummer Tim O’Connor said. “We try to write music that can inspire emotions and thoughts, but also reflect the story the words are already telling.” O’Connor and new bassist David Six make up the rhythm section, bringing in a bombastic but clear style on percussion and bass, while newly minted lead guitarist Jaysyn Dundas holds the group together with sparse but complex melodic guitar hooks.

Having played numerous venues like the House of Blues in Cleveland, The Orbit Room, The Intersection, and numerous West Michigan hot spots, the alt-rock band has emerged as one of the champions of the Grand Rapids music scene. - Fusion Shows

"Premiere: The first single from Red Legs' debut full-length 'Influencer'"

Grand Rapids rock band Red Legs have released the debut single "Copperfield & Roses," from the upcoming full-length album "Influencer."

The full album will be released on Friday, June 26, with a release show at The Intersection, 133 Grandville Ave. SW.

You can check out "Copperfield & Roses" for the very first time below:

The themes of the track come from the Charles Dickens novel "David Copperfield," said vocalist Logan Bailey.

"I read the book a few times, and to me it's about growing up," he said. "It's about realizing the things that influence you, and wondering if that's good or bad. About wondering if things would've been different if you'd changed, or what will happen if you do change.

"To put it simply, it's about wondering whether or not you're going in the right direction."

"Influencer" is a step in a new direction for Red Legs, veering away from edgier rock 'n' roll and stepping into more melodic territory with soaring guitars and sweeping instrumental backups.

"It's still a rock album with rock elements," Bailey said. "But the songs have become more about the melody and the message -- more about the stories we're trying to tell and the emotions we want to convey. The emotions came before the rock 'n' roll. It just sort of naturally went that way and we started to embrace it."

The band also consists of Alex Haskins, Trevor Yake, and Tim O'Connor. Bailey, Haskins and O'Connor each grew up in Ionia, while Yake grew up in Sault Ste. Marie -- but their paths merged when all four moved to Grand Rapids to attend college.

"We were definitely influenced by growing up around each other, and definitely Grand Rapids," Bailey said. "Our goal was to create a Grand Rapids album.

"We have a song called 'Lake Country' that's literally an ode to Michigan. But literally everything we've gotten in terms of becoming adults has come from this city and this community." - Mlive
