A Palm Bay musician will be the featured artist at an upcoming event and will release his new CD at the same time.

If you love the music and food of the Caribbean Islands, you may want to plan your Labor Day weekend around the ninth annual Caribbean Jamboree.

The jamboree, hosted by the Brevard Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Association, will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 2 and 3 at Palm Bay Regional Park.

Recording artist Winjy DanJah of Palm Bay will release his CD "Warning" on Sept. 2, said Ella Austin , chairwoman of the event. Other reggae and calypso stars performing throughout the weekend include Shelley Thunder, Carlington Roberts, Dwain Walters and Ewart "2nd Chance" Blake.

"The band Coco Bean will be there too," Austin said.

Other attractions at the event include the Caribbean Stilt Dancers, folk singers, a "kiddie's corner," cricket, soccer and more. One of the biggest draws may be Devon Harris, one of the original members of the Jamaican bobsled team about which the movie "Cool Runnings" was made, Austin said.

"He's written a book called "Yes, I Can," she said.

Admission to the Caribbean Jamboree is free and open to the public. Caribbean food and drinks will be for sale, Austin said, adding that no coolers will be allowed.

For information about the event, call 728-2558.

Chamber events

The next Greater Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce monthly "Business After Hours" event will be at a baseball game.

Members of the chamber are invited to meet at 5 p.m. Thursday at Gate 5 of Space Coast Stadium in Viera for free parking, hors d'oeuvres, beverages and cash bar at a Brevard Manatees game.

The event is free for chamber members.

The chamber also will host a "Conexion en Espanol" at noon Friday in the chamber office in Palm Bay.

"This is a bridging meeting and brown bag lunch to Hispanic businesses in Palm Bay. It is open to chamber members and prospective members," said Dawn Torney, director of operations for the chamber.

For information about either event, call 951-9998.

Blues bash

The fourth annual Stephen Miller Memorial Biker and Blues Bash will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 26 at Space Coast Harley-Davidson in Palm Bay.

The Harley-Davidson dealership is off exit 176 of Interstate 95 on Palm Bay Road. There will be 17 blues bands performing throughout the day and the admission price is $10 a person at the gate.

Money raised at the event will go to benefit Harbor City Elementary School in Melbourne, said Sue Luley, one of the originators of the event.

Luley said Miller died in 2003 after a long fight with liver disease.

Among those performing at the memorial benefit, will be Artimus Pyle (drummer for "Lynryd Skynyrd"), Steve Thorpe Blues Orchestra and Eric Culbertson.

She said a motorcycle poker run in conjunction with the event will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Saints Motorcyle Clubhouse on Grissom Parkway in Cocoa and end at Space Coast Harley-Davidson.

PALM BAY - -- Island music, cricket and soccer, stilt dancers, and other cultural and sporting events come together this weekend for the annual Caribbean Jamboree at Palm Bay Regional Park.

It's a free-admission event organized by the Brevard Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Association.

Live musical entertainment starts at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday with two-hour Caribbean gospel shows. Reggae star Shelley Thunder headlines Saturday. Thunder is known for his collaboration with pop star Lauren Hill on the hit song "Forgive Them Father." Palm Bay resident Winjy DanJah, Palm Bay's Carlene Gunther, the Zions Rock Band and Dahlia Ashley also perform -- some of them on both days.

The top-drawing Virgin Island Stilt Dancers return this year, performing at 1 p.m. Saturday and again on Sunday.

And the popular steel band concert is back; the Powerstar Steel Band performs Saturday afternoon. Then, the tone switches to calypso and reggae with Mystyk NRG -- the house band at Central Florida's Bob Marley Center.

While the entertainers are on stage and between acts, there's arts and crafts vendors, a car show, a garage sale, a table-game area for dominoes and Scrabble, and a kiddies corner. Several Caribbean restaurants will be selling food, including Hazel, Kruchy Krust, Caribbean Cove and Sweet and Spicy. No coolers will be allowed.

And the popular sporting competitions will be under way: 3 v. 3 Youth Soccer Tournament, 6 v. 6 Adult Soccer Tournament (dubbed Soca Soccer in honor of the efforts of Trinidad and Tobago soccer team in the 2006 World Cup), a Cricket tournament, volleyball, basketball and other events.

Sunday's reggae show starts at noon and features Culture n' Effect and the band Emphasis Reggae. This will be the ninth consecutive year that Emphasis has performed at the Caribbean Jamboree.

Ella Austin, one of the cultural and sports association members, advises everyone to watch for Devon Harris -- a member of the Jamaican Bobsled Team at the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Biography:
Born in the beautiful city of Kingston, Jamaica on June 2, 1977, Wingy weighed 4.2 pounds (hence his stage name, Wingy). During his formative years he attended the Alpha Boys School and St. Joseph College in Kingston, where his liking for music began. The late Bob Marley was an inspiration to Wingy.

His musical career was launched in 1994 as an entertainer performing alongside the likes of Beenie Man, Spragga Benz, Lady Saw, Red Rat, Tonto Metro & Silver Cat, Little Kirk, Tok, Sis Nancy, Briggadeer Jerry, Papa San, Stitchie, Claudell Clark and Jr. Tucker. Wingy has since given his life to Christ. In November, 2003 Wingy made the front page of the local newspaper for being the highlight of a show with his energetic and huge new gospel style. Wingy is frequently compared with dancehall artists Red Rat, Zebra and Baby Wayne, while spitting fire for Christ.

"Depend On God" contains sounds of Hip Hop, Dancehall, Jazz and Roots Regge, with Guest Appearances by Monty G, Dwain Walters, Dane-jah-rus and Joy. This versatility is shown in songs like "World Gone Mad" and "Unity." This is an evangelistic album geared toward reaching teenagers for Christ. "Depend On God" is an 18 track album addressing the world and its false gods. It also includes songs of encouragement and gives many reasons why we need Jesus Christ in our lives.
