"Xenovibes the Concert"

I go to a lot of events in Singapore visual, dance, music, performance, theatre, launches etc...!! and I believe I am honest in saying that this was one of the first events that I have experienced in Singapore over the past six years of living here that engaged a respect, want and energy from both the audience and the performers firstly for it's cutting-edge contemporary artistic exploration, and secondly a parallel high entertainment quality fueled by artistic integrity.

I am so impressed! Both my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of sound and I feel confident in saying the audience enjoyed it and were inspired and challenged by the evening ... I placed full confidence and trust in this artist's integrity and obvious abilities based on listening to some recorded versions of Shueh-li's music, however I had never before experienced her live performance.

A truly amazing talent; informed, professional, warm, diverse, exciting, inspiring.. And to witness this artist amongst some amazing peers from Australia, the US and Singapore was truly sensational, and a successful example of collaboration.. !

June 2004 - Karee Dahl, Arts profiler, Art Monthly Australia

"Cultural Gem"

Shueh-li has come to be known as a unique individual, a talented performer and a cultural gem that has not only exposed Singaporeans to a one-of-a-kind musical experience – she has garnered a loyal following - Shueh-li has indeed, over a span of 11 years, conquered Singapore’s music scene with her brand of music and skills. - M Chang, Assistant Product Development Manager, TV12 Arts Channel Singapore

"Thereminists - Past and Present"

“Only a few people were literally able to handle the instrument as far as composition and music making were concerned. Important players and composer of the Theremin are Russian Lydia Kavina, Japanese Eri, Netherlander Wilco Botermans, American Rob Schwimmer, Australian born Singapore artist Shueh-li with Xenovibes” - automatictext.com, Germany.

"Xenovibes @ Eisemann Ctr"

“It was like taking a musical LSD trip with erotic undertones.”

- Harriet Mills USA

"Xenovibes the Concert - OPH"

Xenovibes (Singapore)… was a huge success, drawing a packed crowd, with those who stood throughout the event being a testimony to the degree in which Shueh-li had captivated and created an audience for her brand of music.

At present, Shueh-li is a leading champion of electronica in Singapore and her tireless advocacy of the genre and medium has made her name synonymous with it. In fact, it is possible that Shueh-li is among the few theremin players in the work who has so energetically worked towards securing a place for this instrument in mainstream concert life. - C Goh, General Manager,The Arts House at the Old Parliament Singapore

"Builder and Maker of Sound"

Ong Shueh-li may well be Singapore's first and only diva of the theremin.
Ong who learnt her trade at music college...sees herself as one of the myriad results of the experiments in the long-term history of new music.

Computers and technology, she says, are just input tools that help her realise the music .. She crafts textures, moods and sonicscapes in the same way a painter may capture light, shadow and shapes with water colours or oils.

For all the talk of art and electronica wizardry. Ong is also unashamedly 'pop'. "That's what music technology is about and that's what I 'm about," she says. "We wear many hats; there are many layers to what we do." - S E Tan, The Straits Times Singapore

"Xenovibes the Concert - Dallas"

Shueh-li & John,
I wanted to express my thanks and gratitude of your amazing performance at the last Late Night!
The programme was astounding ...P.S. we had a record-breaking attendance of 4380! - J Rose, Mgr Public Program, Dallas Museum of Art, USA

"Not to be missed!"

"Sophisticated pop that fuses Eastern and Western music influences into a seamless whole... that only an exceptional talent can pull off.

Music From Another Land is more than techno pop flash, more than New Age noodling, and more than music from the Far East; it is exactly what the title says it is, and it is not to be missed."

"Accessible to pop music fans"

"I usually find that when people combine world instruments with pop music, the result is hardly listenable. Shueh-li has managed to combine many styles and instruments to create something very accessible to pop music fans. Reminds me of Basia." - A Frye, Producer (Charlie Pride)

"Fresh and Fun"

"MFAL ...is very well produced (it sounds good)! It's not uncommon to hear albums by thereminists that master divinely the instrument but are simply not able to produce themselves. This is not the case of Shueh-li Ong, who really “plays” the studio like a musical instrument itself. Shueh-li Ong is an inspired artist with a solid background who has brought fresh ideas in the theremin field, so I would expect further surprises as she develops her unique artistic path." ~ V Saggini, ThereminVox.com ITALY

Bio

Xenovibes USA is Australian born Singapore composer and show producer Shueh-li Ong and New York drummer/producer John Anthony Martinez.

Ong is known as "Singapore's 1st and only diva of the Theremin" (the Straits Times Singapore) and for her work as director, composer and technologist with multimedia performance art group, Electric Muse, which under her Director-ship has become a name associated with progressive music technology in entertainment.
Her trademark is in the way she puts her ‘sound’ together, using her instruments (east, west, arcane, classical and new technology) and her intimate knowledge of its building blocks.

Martinez is an alumnus of the world-renowned High School of Music and Art in New York City and the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
An in-demand drummer and producer, Martinez first came to the public’s attention in an article in Modern Drummer magazine. Martinez, founder of Fingerfoot Music Productions, has performed nationally and internationally. Martinez has worked with Jean Carne (Earth Wind & Fire), Bernard Wright (Miles Davis), Buddy Miles (Santana), Bruce Faulconer (composer/Dragon Ball Z),Bill Tillman (Blood Sweat & Tears) and more.
