"Mattison Park"

Last Saturday night, which happened also to be First Saturday in Asbury Park, Mattison Park had a great trio, featuring songstress Yvette Norwood-Tiger, billed as a 'Traditional Jazz Vocalist'. Now that might send those who associate jazz with scatting and lots of jarring sounds running for the door, which would be a big mistake. It is so rare to hear her selections -- "Cry Me a River", "God Bless the Child", "Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me", "Green Dolphin Street", "They Can't Take that Away from Me"-- because you actually need a real singing voice to do them." Ms. Norwood-Tiger is the kind of accomplished voice one associates with the classically trained female singers of the 30s and 40s. This woman sings the standards the way they were meant to be sung. I hope the management of Mattison Park keeps this group for a long, long while.

"Singin' and Swingin'"

It didn’t take long for jazz vocalist Yvette Norwood-Tiger to develop a following. After just a few area appearances, the Long Branch resident can count on a large turnout of jazz enthusiasts whenever she’s on the bill. Her recent sold-out gig at El Lobo Negro, Asbury Park’s jazz and performance hotspot, generated enthusiastic buzz among musicians and fans alike. The swingin’ and groovin’ singer’s career is on the fast track. Whether she is backed with a full jazz ensemble or with a piano accompanist, she sets an authentic jazzy mood for true jazz listeners.

Bio

Yvette Norwood-Tiger, vocalist, songwriter, and vocal coach, is a Detroit, Michigan native who hails from a family of musicians, including a father who played guitar and a mother who played drums.   Her earliest music influences were Motown and gospel and she fell deeply in love with jazz as a teenager while attending high school in Detroit.   In addition to performing music from great composers such as Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and the Gershwins, she also enjoys singing traditional gospel hymns, Latin jazz, and arias from great composers such as Puccini. Yvette also has a love for Ella Fitzgerald's vocally clean and pure interpretations of the great American Songbook. She honors Ella's memory with her own vocal styling, while emphasizing intonation and storytelling. Her repertoire also includes classic songs from popular music including works from the Beatles to Stevie Wonder to Whitney Houston.  Yvette also loves performing songs in other languages which includes French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Yvette performs worldwide and recently with a 14-piece jazz orchestra - the Cotton Club All Stars at the famous Cotton Club in Harlem, NY.  She wows large audiences and has also performed her Latin jazz renditions with multi-Grammy nominated and master Latin percussionist, Tito Puente, Jr. and his band, headed by -Grammy winning pianist Marlow Rosado.  She is a true jazz natural in any setting from large music festivals to intimate jazz clubs both nationally and internationally.
