"Cleveland blues bassist Afi Scruggs premieres 'Life Is A Teacher'"

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Learning to play bass guitar was on Afi Scruggs' bucket list for a while.

The musician, who regularly performs at Cleveland churches, had two reasons for formally picking up the string instrument. First, she liked the way the instrument was tuned, and thought she could make decent music on it fairly quickly. Second, she thought the bass meant she wouldn't have to carry around as much equipment as the keyboard.

Picking up a new instrument came naturally for Scruggs. She's been playing piano since she was 6, and started playing bass in 2009. Scruggs studied with Cleveland bassist Rob White and started putting out original music of her own.

Today, Scruggs is premiering her latest song, "Life Is A Teacher," on cleveland.com.

The song dips into more than just Scruggs' background as a musician; she also is a reporter.

"As a writer, there are two types of music that I really love because of the story," she said. "Blues and traditional country music are the last [genres] that really have a storytelling where the story matters. With blues, the writer in me loves it because you get to tell a story." - cleveland.com

Bio

My name is Afi Scruggs. I play bass and keyboard, and I’m a singer-songwriter. I love blues, jazz, funk, gospel and contemporary Christian music and Latin. My tastes are wide-ranging; I won’t blink if you ask me to play bluegrass. No matter the genre, I can play it straight, or combine styles.

I've had interesting success as a singer-songwriter. My single, "Life Is A Teacher" has been featured on the Sunday morning news show Cleveland 19 WOIO, the local CBS affiliate. For the past three years, I've helped local high school students write songs that' have won $2,500 for their schools.

I’m one of the few female bassists here in Cleveland. I’ve laid down the low end for some of the city’s finest musicians: blues harpist Wallace Coleman; guitarist Michael J Calhoun, founding member of the Grammy-winning Dazz Band; as well as guitarists Charlie Christopherson and Butch Armstrong. I played with the Park Brothers blues band as the opening band for national blues guitarist Samantha Fish.
