The brainchild of Los Angeles artist Adam Finkel, Alek Fin specializes in electronic music that straddles gentle pop, adult contemporary, with just enough experimentation to give it enough edginess. The twitchiness of Thom Yorke, the smoothness of James Blake, and the crooning of Patrick Watson, if you will.

Three years after the debut EP Mull, we finally have some new Alek Fin music to tout, and you can listen to his new EP Án Mynda below.

“‘Án Mynda’ is the Icelandic translation of ‘without form’ or ‘without generation’,” Finkel explains. “It’s a concept inspired by my step-father Charlie who passed away just after Mull was released. I wanted to explore the idea of transitioning between this life and the next. Although there is a melancholy nature to these tracks I wanted each of them to be equally as hopeful.” - Pop Matters

LA’s Alek Fin (aka Adam Finkel) may be an electronic musician, but his newest track “Golden, Blinding” was made almost entirely with the human voice.

It started when the Moscow-based producer Galun sent him a beat made solely from vocal percussion, and from there, Fin took the idea and ran with it. “[Galun’s beat] inspired me to use vocals as the primary textures and make things as organic as possible,” Fin said in a press release.

The result is a brooding, slow-burning groove that channels the subdued production and vocal stylings of James Blake. “Golden, Blinding” comes ahead of Finkel’s second EP, Án Mynda, which is due out later this year. Án Mynda is an Icelandic translation of “without form” or “without generation.” - FLOOD Mag

It has been a long time between drinks for Californian electronic producer Adam Finkel (ALEK FIN), with his debut Mull EP being released all the way back in 2012. Since that time, we have seen Finkel put out a couple of remixes and feature on collaborations with German producer Robot Koch for Berlin label Project Mooncircle, and it seems that their time together has given ALEK the inspiration to begin work on a follow-up release, the first taste of which we are featuring for you today with the title track from his upcoming sophomore EP, Án Mynda.

Each understated element, from the spectral vocals, to the layered skittering of percussion, eschew extravagance, and they add a poignant texture to the overall composition. What that means, in layman’s terms, is that that piece is one that’s truly exceptional.

EP title track “Mull” feels very spaced out, with it’s shore like synth and plodding bass, whilst “Rocks In Paper”, is slightly more grounded by its drum lead pattern. Mull EP isn’t too far of a soundtrack, it’s whole structure and pace could be easily be set to a melancholic scene of some sort. The EP single “Waiting like a Wolf” is not far off Thom Yorkes more leftfield escapades, and actually reminds me of a Holy Fuck remix of Nude, except more melodic and dreamy. The same can actually be said about his entire Mull EP, which came out just a few weeks ago. From start to finish it’s very ambient and lulling, but don’t mistake its quietness for monotony — there’s hardly ever a dull or uninspired moment.
