"Notes on Hannah Unsalted"

Hannah Unsalted is a solo act from Valparaiso, Indiana (Northwest Indiana, near Chicago). Hannah grew up on Lake Michigan, and jokes that their style is Great Lakes Folk, as their style is mainly Folk, and growing up on a Great Lake (like their friend, I too find this clever, and fitting!)

Hannah initially reached out to me after seeing that a friend had been featured, and I'm so glad they did. The song I listened to, Gin, hit home.

So, without further ado, take a little time to get to know Hannah with me!

NON: When did you begin your musical journey?

HU: I was 15 years old when I started my musical journey. I didn't really get serious about it until about 22 years old. Even now at 35 I'm learning new things every day and working harder than I ever have to play and write music people can relate to and enjoy!

NON: Who are some of your inspirations? (Music/otherwise)

HU: My musical inspirations are many. Willi Carlilse is a big one as of late, that guy is one of the most talented, kind humans you could ever meet, and his music and lyrics rock your soul. Same goes for Benjamin Tod/Lost Dog Street Band, I've met so many great people and made some amazing friends because of them. Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and so many more have inspired me over the years! Nature and Lake Michigan's coast are huge inspirations to me, as well as the way I've lived, the love I've felt, the lack of love, and my mental health journey.

NON: Can you describe you writing/creative process?

HU: That is touch one for me! I have ADHD so thoughts run rampant in my brain. I usually think of lyrics out of no where and try and write them down immediately. Then when I sit down to put a song together I can go back and look at all my notes and put them all together. Its a interesting process haha but it works for me. I always find it interesting to go back and listen to my first recording of a new song and then listen to it in the present state and it is wild how different it becomes and what they develop into!

NON: Do you think music can be a form of healing?

HU: Yes, absolutely music is healing. It heals me every single day. No matter my mood or if I'm writing, playing, or listening it feeds my heart and soul. I'm not sure where I would be in a world without music. I'd be lost.

SHOUT OUTS:

Cass Blair and Cory Dupuis, Julie Nestoroff, Justin Dye, Matt and Gina of Rusty Creek Forge, and my Best Friends and Family who have supported me threw my entire musical journey. Without you guys I'd be lost! - Notes on Notes
