Music BC and K96-3 are proud to announce the 5 artists who will participate in the inaugural year of the K96-3 Emerging Artist Program!

These artists will be teamed up with a producer and studio from interior BC to record 2 master quality sound recordings, receive $500 in cash support, play a showcase at Festival Kelowna’s Parks Alive! Series, attend a day long educational intensive on the music industry, and have the chance to win first place which would include $4000 cash, a Gibson Les Paul guitar, a showcase slot at Rifflandia Festival in Kelowna, and more!

Congratulations to our top 5 artists:
Jodi Doidge (Kamloops)

29-year-old Singer/Songwriter Jodi Doidge has the innate ability of pulling lyrics and melodies, seemingly, out of thin air and weaving together songs that will undoubtedly be stuck in your head for days after.

This Kamloops, BC native, who has been honing her craft since the age of 14, has returned to her roots after five years in Vancouver, BC where she recorded and released her EP, Little Love Songs, in 2012.

Jodi recorded Little Love Songs with Winston Hauschild (Hannah Georgas, Wanting Qu), who understood her natural approach to music. The EP is a magnificent blend of folk-pop and alt-country, blending the genres effortlessly and brilliantly showcases Jodi’s talent.

Jodi Doidge has been capturing the hearts of artists and music fans alike, garnering comparisons to The Wailin’ Jenny’s, The Civil Wars and Dolly Parton. Her clear, expressive voice, catchy melodies, and charming stage presence stay with you long after the performance has finished.

"Variety's Got Talent People's Choice Competition"

What made you decide to perform music?

I love how listening to my favorite songs makes me feel, and I want to be able to create that for others. It is such a powerful feeling playing for people and nothing makes me happier than to share my gift.

What won’t you perform without? Why?

I recently got a heart tattoo on the inside of my left wrist, Every time I play I can look down and see it and it reminds me that I’m doing what I love and sharing that love with others.

Which band would you love to open for? Why?

Sarah Harmer. She has been my biggest influence for as long as I can remember. I love everything she does, what she stands for and I admire her so much. I’ve seen her play twice and lost my voice singing along to every single song.

What was the last concert you saw?

Florence and The Machine at Deer Lake Park.

What is your source material for songs?

My imagination, listening to other singer/songwriters and feeling inspired to make beautiful music, love stories, just picking up my guitar and playing chords and letting the words come to me.

What do you know about Variety? Do you have a personal connection to Variety?

Having been born and raised in British Columbia I am very familiar with the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon. Though I don’t have a personal connection to Variety, I do know what it means to have support when a loved one is in need. I am so grateful that we live in a country where health care is provided to us and that there are organizations like Variety to really make a huge impact in the lives of families in B.C. Music and healing go hand in hand and I would love to be able to one day study to be a Music Therapist or Educator and make a difference in children’s lives.

"Interview with singer and songwriter Jodi Doidge Part 2"

Cendrine Marrouat: Which achievement are you the proudest of so far?

Jodi Doidge: Every little success I have had feels amazing, just playing for people and feeling like I've made a connection with someone is really special.

Making this album has been a great achievement for me. It is amazing to set your mind to something and for it to become a reality. I think we all have what it takes to follow our dreams. Some days it's really hard to believe in yourself but when I look back at everything I've done so far, I feel hopeful for my future.

CM: Who are your main influences?

JD: I'm a big fan of Canadian music, I actually don't listen to anything else which I guess is a bit biased but I really think we have some of the world's best and most innovative talent, and everyone is just so nice!

I've been listening to Sarah Harmer, Jenn Grant, Feist, Kathleen Edwards and Jill Barber for years. I would love to just do a huge tour with that group, they all have amazing strength and have really carved a path for female musicians in Canada.

There's a lot of great talent coming out of Vancouver too; Dan Mangan, Jasper Sloan Yip, Hey Ocean!, Mother Mother, Said the Whale, Hannah Georgas and my friends of course who, for the most part are all singer/songwriters, Michael Averill, Ross Fairbairn, Jen Miller, Julia Spitale, Rob Fillo, Nat Jay, Glenn Chatten and so many more. They are all are really great examples of how hard work and determination pay off.

CM: What is next for you?

JD: Right now, I'm just booking shows and promoting the EP. There is a lot of hard work ahead but it is fun. I have to keep reminding myself, with the help of friends and family, not to get ahead of myself and just take it one day at a time. I would love to eventually record a full-length album and tour across Canada.

CM: Where can people find more information on you and your work?

JD: They can find me on Bandcamp, follow me on Faceook or Twitter, or just email and say hi at jodi.doidge@gmail.com.

CM: Any last words?

JD: I just want to thank you and your readers so much! I am so grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to making more music for you all to enjoy!

I hope to make it out East eventually so if anyone is interested in hosting a house concert or have any venues in mind please drop me a line at jodidoidge.com. - Examiner.com

"Interview with singer and songwriter Jodi Doidge Part 1"

Jodi Doidge grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, and currently lives in Vancouver, where she regularly performs in local venues. She has just released her first EP.

Cendrine Marrouat: Hello Jodi, thank you for answering my questions. As a starter, introduce yourself to us.

Jodi Doidge: Thank you Cendrine and thank you for the chance to talk with you and your readers!

I've been writing and performing for over a decade and I'm excited to be releasing "Little Love Songs." As you mentioned I grew up in Kamloops and I can't say exactly where I caught the music bug as no one in my immediate family was particularly musical.

I've always had a vivid imagination and enjoyed writing and playing music and eventually the two fused together. Vancouver has been my home for four years and I've come to be a part of a really close-knit community of musicians. Everyone knows how hard it is to break into music and we are all really supportive of each other. I've been really enjoying my time here learning and growing as an artist and as a person.

CM: Is there a particular event that triggered your desire to become a professional musician?

JD: Music has always been a huge part of my life from a young age first with piano lessons then switching to guitar and songwriting when I was about 14. It was always my desire to pursue music but there were many obstacles so I worked and travelled through my 20's but music was always there. Now at 28, I finally feel like I have the maturity and stability to really go for a career in music.

CM: Let us talk about "Little Love Songs," your first EP. What was the inspiration behind this project?

JD: The EP is really a culmination of years of writing and is a piece of myself that I wanted to share. For me, it is a dream manifested through hard work and determination and I'm really proud of it and of myself.

When I decided I wanted to record an EP I didn't have a clear vision of the end product; everything just came together very naturally.

CM: Why such a title?

JD: All of the songs are about love, I really don't know if I've ever written a song that doesn't involve love or relationships in some way or another. I played around with different titles but decided to use the name of one of the tracks, "Little Love Song." It just seemed to really fit perfectly in my mind and I think the artwork and everything it represents to me just fits. I wanted it to be playful and easy to identify with.

CM: You worked with producer Winston Hauschild on your album. How did you meet and how was the experience?

JD: I had tracked Winston down, I knew of him by name from other musicians and I knew of his work and I really respect his talent.

I emailed him some of my demos and asked if he would produce my EP and he said yes. The experience was great, he really has a fantastic natural ability to hear the song as a whole. I gave him a lot of creative freedom and it was a great learning experience for me. I am really, really happy with what we came up. - Examiner.com

"Jodi Doidge’s EP ‘Little Love Songs’ Review"

This is Jodi’s first EP Release and she is excited about it, and she should be. This 5 song masterpiece is perfect for the country or folk lover inside of all of you. Jodi has put together a EP that not only tells a story, but every song has an album waiting for it to tell its true story. Yes from the moment I listened to this CD I know I will be listening to it for years to come.

I was able to sit down with Jodi on a Tuesday night at VanMusic’s Open Mic at Displace Hashery in Kits. There she began to tell me how this work of art (in more ways then one) was created. Even though it took 1 year to make, 10 years to create and a whole life time to prepare for, Jodi has put her heart and soul into this. She wishes that she could just give it to everyone for free just so they can enjoy her contribution to the world.

Jodi cares about this project and anyone who talks to her starts to understand just what this means to her. Often times on Facebook you will see her update her status letting everyone know where she will be that night and if you come and say hi to her, she will give you a copy. Yes Jodi never made this EP to make millions, she made it for everyone to enjoy.

Jodi is a huge fan of Jenn Grant and follows her on Facebook. One day she noticed that Grant posted a message about doing artwork, so Jodi emailed her right away and asked her about doing a painting for the album cover. She agreed to do something on commission and basically it took off from there. Jodi emailed her some ideas she had and Jenn came up with the rest. The painting is on her wall at home in front of her computer work space. Jodi’s friend Terry took some high res photos of it and together they created the layout.

Jodi recorded Little Love Songs back in February of 2011 but needed to raise the money for her CD. She went on IndieGoGo and raised the money in a month. Even a band in Germany found her and donated $50! After listening to little Love Songs you will truly understand why so many supported this EP being made. - VanMusic

Bio

Jodi Doidge is a creative enterprise, a vocal songbird and a musical maven.  Her voice sounds
like Dolly Parton and Leslie Feist created a love child. Jodi sings her
own lyrics and music in a distinctly unique alt/pop/country style.  Singing
about love, relationships, transformation and etheric feelings she has
the ability to transport you from your seat and into her heart.
Jodi has toured extensively throughout British Columbia and Alberta,
attracting devoted fans who have been eagerly snapping up copies of her debut
EP, Little Love Songs.  Jodi recorded her EP with acclaimed Vancouver
Producer Winston Hauschild who has also produced Wanting Qu and Hannah
Georgas.  A standout emerging artist she has most recently been nominated in the top 6 for the *ATB Financial All Albertan Songwriting Contest and has been selected to participate in the Banff Centre’s Source & Inspiration Residency program,
taking place during fall 2014.  Jodi has a desire to expand, the
gumption to follow her heart and the vulnerability in her musical
ability to make it happen.  She writes about Universal laws and truths
in a poetic manner, allowing audiences to enjoy not only the sweet
melodies but
also absorb her synthesized cosmic wisdom.  Currently residing in
Banff, Alberta Jodi is a gypsy, often found on self-promoted tours,
living out of her vehicle and friend’s guest rooms. She is the real deal: an authentic artist and creative spirit who leaves a wake of light in her trail--follow Jodi on social and watch her story unfold.
