Kent Wells Productions is proud to announce that we've signed a production deal with artist Madeline Smith to produce her first album! Madeline was raised in New Jersey, but with family roots that run deep in the moist soil of Louisiana, her southern charm is undeniable the moment she walks in the room. A stunning vocalist, she also plays the piano and guitar, and is a prolific writer drawing poetic lyrics from the deep well of a tender and introspective heart. We're excited to get Madeline in the room with Nashville's premier songwriting talents, and look forward to recording her EP in early Spring! - Kent Wells
FRANKLIN — A 16-year-old singer-songwriter from the Somerset section of town says she's following her dreams as she prepares to release her debut album sometime next month, less than six months after signing a contract with Dolly Parton's producer, Kent Wells.
Madeline Smith, a home-schooled high school student, still lives in Somerset with her parents and travels back and forth to Nashville to record with Wells. She has one more year left to complete high school, and says she's hoping to move out to Nashville after that.
"I'm looking at Belmont and Tennessee State," she said in a phone interview Wednesday.
Smith says she first got into music when she began taking piano lessons at 10 years old.
"I couldn't get the tune and rhythm right to a song, so my piano teacher told me to sing, and she flipped out," Smith recalled. "She left, ran outside and told my mom I needed to get (singing) lessons. I was really, really shy, and I didn't want to take lessons, but I eventually got over my shyness and I realized I did want to pursue singing. I eventually sang at every piano recital."
But Smith said she had a tough time convincing her parents that her love of singing was for real.
"My parents wouldn't let me do music for a career for the longest time," she said. "They would let me do piano and singing lessons, and they saw it as part of my home-school curriculum, and they would let me do church choir — but when I told them I wanted to do this for a living, they said, 'No, you need to go to college and get a good degree, have something very stable.'"
Smith said it took a while, but she was able to convince them music is what she wanted to do for the long-run. And her father has stayed close by her side ever since.
"My dad's in the band — he's my guitarist," she said.
"It works out really well to have my dad in the band," she said. "He has to go everywhere with me anyway — I'm a minor."
For her album, Smith said listeners can expect to hear all original music.
"Some songs I cowrote, but some are solely written by me," she said. "But every single song was written by me. They're all contemporary country. Some have twists, and some have more rock influence and even a little R&B influence, but I think it'll all come together."
And on Saturday, Smith's family, friends and fans will have an opportunity to watch her play the State Fair Meadowlands during the first Country Music Night sponsored by NASH FM, New York's country radio station.
"My family is always right there and supportive, and my friends are going to be there too — they're going to drive up. It's really cool because my brother's graduation is the night before, and my grandparents from Louisiana and Arizona are flying in, and they'll be able to see me. It's very rare."
Smith will open for headliner Lauren Alaina, the Country Music Association's New Artist of the Year, and first runner-up in the 10th season of American Idol.
"I love that they're bringing country music to the Tristate Area," she said. "But I cannot wait to open for Lauren Alaina, and be part of all of this."
