"Festival honors Miami’s river history"

The ninth annual Downtown Miami Riverwalk Festival and Boat Parade was enjoyed by more than 400 people on Saturday Nov. 12, along the Miami Riverwalk, adjacent to 315-335 S. Biscayne Blvd., in Miami.

About 30 vendors participated.

“This special multicultural event allows our local residents and visitors to explore and interact among the local arts and culture vendors, while also showcasing the unique surroundings at the mouth of the Miami River,” says the mission of the festival.

The opening ceremony featured Catherine Hummingbird Ramirez, the Caribe Tribal Indian Queen. Zen Nirvana Nero sang the national anthem and other patriotic songs. Six pageants joined the crowd at the opening ceremony representing seven countries.

The boat parade was led by the U.S. Coast Guard and included a helicopter demonstration and Miami Fire Boat water display.

Keeping with the traditional theme of “Where Miami was born,” the non-profit, Artbox, created, with the children on-site, a batik mural featuring the historic mouth of the Miami River and the Tequesta Indians.

The entertainment line-up included: The Nostalgic Minds with soothing acoustic music; Leo Casino on Sax, strolling the Riverwalk; Mi Florida Costa Rica, traditional folkloric dance group; and Drumming Fingers Youth Dance Troup.

Zest, Cuisine of the Sun hosted a VIP Party on Nov. 11, where the festival painting “Mouth of the Miami River - Past, Present and Future” by Turgo Bastien was unveiled. Dignitaries included Consul General of Haiti Gandy Thomas. - The Miami Times
