"Exclusive Interview: J-Hen - On To The Next Ft. Yng Rell"

1. How long have you been making music?

I’ve been doing my R&B /Pop for the last 5 years, and prior that I was rapping.

2. What is your perception on originality in making music?

It’s like my grandmother’s sweet potato recipe she passed it down to my mother, who in turn passed it down to my sister. So to say with music, the original was with Michael Jackson everybody uses Michael Jackson’s music and puts their on spin on it.

3. Since you stay in the studio, do you write for others as well?

I’ve written songs for independent artist, and my writing has gained the attention of such artist as Genuwine and Charlie Wilson.

4. Do you have any obstacles in making music?

Sometimes I experience writer’s block, the concept may not come to me right away and when it does that’s when the magic happens.

5. What are your goals with making music your career?

I want to make sure my bills are paid and I can perform.

6. Being a new artist how do you feel you will make a lane for yourself?

Because of my originality and flexibility in music it gives me the ability to create my own lane.

7. Are you dropping a full album anytime soon?

1. What are you currently working on?

Currently working on a new album and gearing up for the Love after Dark Cruise March 2017, as well as doing a toy and food drive November 19th.

2. How long have you been doing music?

I’ve been involved in music all of my life but I’ve been doing R&B and Pop music for the past 5 years.

3. Who inspires you musically?

There’s so many people but Michael Jackson, James Brown, Prince, Ginuwine, and Usher just to name a few.

4. Who are you looking to collab with in the future?

There are tons of artist I would love to work with but I think it would be dope to collab with Charlie Wilson, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg.

5. Since you dance, would you ever consider doing dancing full time?

I love to dance but my passion is music.

1. What is the biggest accomplishment you have done in the music industry?

My biggest accomplishment in the music industry was getting the stamp of approval of Charlie Wilson and Ginuwine for music I wrote.

2. What do you consider to be the ideal life of a musician?

Being able to pay my bills and perform.

3. How do you deal with the pressures of being a musician?

I have a good foundation that keeps me grounded, and I keep my circle small.

4. What type of artist do you consider yourself?

I consider myself to be a storyteller.

5. What can we expect in the future from J-Hen?

Chart breaking hits, award shows, touring and maybe even television and film.

6. How long have you been making music?

I’ve been doing my R&B /Pop for the last 5 years, and prior that I was rapping.

7. Have you ever thought of doing acting?

1. How do you get people to take you seriously as a musician?

I respect my craft as an artist and by staying consistent with marketing and promoting quality music and content, all while being a positive role model. At the end of the day if I don’t take myself seriously no one else will. 2. What is the importance of the connections you make? How can you utilize them?

Connections are important because they are a necessity, and I utilize them by focusing on their strength. 3. If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose this career? Would you do anything differently?

Yes definitely, but this time around I would chase the music instead of chasing the girls. 4. What are typical mistakes people make when trying to pursue this career?

Believing the hype and not trusting the process. Artist want the instant gratification but not the hard work and dedication to achieve their career. 5. What personal advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?

Stay consistent, stay positive, keep God First, keep positive people around you, stay focused and keep pushing, don’t give up until you achieve your dream.

6. How do you feel hip hop has changed over the years?

Hip Hop is about the Turn Up. In the past it was about lyrics, and now it’s about the turn up.

1. When did you start writing music—and what or who were your early passions and influences?

I started music when I was In high school. My influences were artist such as Michael Jackson, Prince, James Brown and Genuwine.

2. What are your main impulses to write about when making music?

My emotions and past experiences causes me to write music. 3. How would you describe and rate the music scene of the city you are currently living in?

The music scene is hit or miss. 4. In which way would you like to be received by the public?

I would like to be perceived as a good guy with a little bit of an edge. 5. Music-sharing sites and blogs as well as a flood of releases in general are presenting both listeners and artists with challenging questions. What’s your view on the value of music today?

The value of music in my eyes have gone down because people use to buy an entire album and now they just buy the singles. 6. What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments and pieces in your musician work and/or career?

The incisive moment was making decisive changes in my team, some are with us and some are not but the changes that have been made were for the betterment of my work and my career. - Hits 106 FM

2. Making R&B music has become a hobby for some and career for others. What is it for you?

Making music for me started out as a hobby to get the girls, and it became a passion which is now my career.

3. Do you have any insane experiences related to music?

When I was on tour, theses ladies tried to sexually assault me, luckily my parents were there, and my momma don’t play. Lol

4. Based on your knowledge of music from an educational standpoint where do you think most artist are lacking?

From an educational standpoint most artist are lacking the business side of the music industry.

5. What does R&B mean to you?

R&B makes you feel some type of way. It gets you in the mood and can take you places. R&B means family togetherness.

6. Is On To The Next your break out record?

No “Sex Instructor” was on the Hot Singles Sales Chart and ranked at #8 for 13 weeks.

7. How important do you think connecting with fans can be?

3. Why do you feel your music is different from other artist?
I draw my inspiration from some of the greatest creative legends, but what makes my music different is how I tell my story.

I’m a son of God, I’m the son of James and Velicia, I am a storyteller who tells vivid stories through my music.
5. Do you feel that Texas is making an impact on the music industry?
Yes. Texas provides a lot of venues, festivals and concerts for live music.
6. At what age did you start listening to R&B music?
I was listening to R&B my whole life. That’s how I got here lol.
7. What can you say has been your struggle as an artist?
The struggle was finding my image and sound in the beginning.
8. Do you have a crazy story about how you got here like most other artist?
A crazy story was when my parents caught me in my room singing to girls.
9. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Grammy’s, BET, MTV, and any other television stations in the next 5 years.

1. How do you balance your music with other obligations?

I schedule my time wisely and having the support system I have allows me to balance my obligations and enjoy making my music accordingly.

2. Do you attend sessions? What makes a good session?

I have attended sessions as much as possible. The creative diversity in each session makes it a good session.

3. When and why did you start making music?

When I was in High School. I started making music because girls were more attracted to guys that could sing.

4. What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?

My fondest memories is of my parents and I having jam sessions in the kitchen. My father was a drummer and a saxophonist in the band and my mother played the clarinet, and we would go from bible study to having jam sessions in the kitchen.

5. How has music as a whole changed your life?

Music definitely kept me out of trouble. Music gave me focus and purpose. When I was injured and couldn’t play basketball, music was my go to, and I haven’t turned back sense.

6. What do you expect to accomplish with your music and its message?

Since I’m a storyteller, I want people to relate to what I’m saying in a positive way, in hopes to inspire them and to help change their lives.

7. Are you currently signed to a major label?

He currently lives in Garland, TX a suburban area of Dallas, Texas, where he grew up listening to such idols as Michael Jackson, Timbaland, Luther Vandross, Silk, The Neptunes, Scott Storch, and Bobby Valentino to name a few. These entertainers helped him to develop his music into what it is today.
