"Bones For The Altar"

Coming to us from the Atlanta region of Georgia, the trio of Buzzard Cult play a mixture of grungy heavy rock and crusty downtempo punk, turning out a fusion that's lively, easy to groove to, and clearly averse to poppy over-polishing. Leading with the EP's advance single, “No Turning Back”, the band shows guitar crunch meshed with bass-line toothiness, and drumming that fills in and embellishes on the rest of the rhythms. Feeling something like a Dirt-era Alice in Chains B-side, “Ill Scheming” follows, alternating between brooding musings and outburst lashings of the titular chorus. The enjoyable cragginess of the instruments rising together each time they hit that chorus should put a grin on your face and a nod in your neck, and BC ride that momentum into the more uptempo reproach of “You're to Blame”, taking aim at the guilty at large and brandishing a crashing upswell for its climax.
The second half of the EP initially slips back into lower speeds, but as “Lucid Dreams” continues, it finds its angry footing again. Slowly cooking until it boils over, this track just might be my personal favorite from the six showcased on this EP, and I imagine that its back-and-forth energy takes on some real power in live performances. “Night is Dark” slips back into a more relaxed bass groove, but keeps the tension evident in the bite of the guitar and coiled bursts from the drummer. A pedal-treated guitar solo lends things some extra juice, pushing the intensity of the song's ending up even as they slow the tempo down.
Final track “Lazy Mind” brings things to a solid head, working stern riffs and accusatory lyrics while gradually ramping up the tightness, and with its bass hooks digging in, it's hard not to wind up with this one stuck in your head. All together, it makes for a fun demonstration of the band's style and capabilities, and delivers some quality music in a style you don't come across too often. The band will also be playing some live shows in September, so if you're in the general Georgia area, check them out!

"Introducing: Buzzard Cult"

Introducing Buzzard Cult is perhaps best by listing off some monikers, names, and descriptions best used in creating a little context on this three-piece from Atlanta, Georgia. So, here we go – Grunge, Southern Rock, ’80s Hardcore and of course, riffs.

Got an idea? Good. To further add to it, however, it is important to mention the band’s status as a three-piece. Why is this important? Well, the mighty three-piece of underground rock is something less and less common in the modern music scene, bands favour more layers in their craft, away from the trailblazing simplicity that much of their inspiration comes from. This is the case across the wide-genre-spanning sound-verse but particularly so in the case of ever-versatile and diverse world of Alt. Rock.

Take ‘No Turning’ back, for example, disinterested, relaxed Southern Rock tones apply themselves to classic, very early Hardcore Punk ala the likes of Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and that influential ilk.

The band very much explore this wing but almost always fall back on their foundational Grunge. Tracks such as ‘Ill Scheming’ lumber on in gloom-ridden mood and attitude comparable to what made much of Nirvana‘s work so seminal. Buzzard Cult are unrestrained and free but don’t feel the need to overtly show it. That’s not to say the music is devoid of effort rather simply exists in a state of natural perpetuation. Tracks such as the Rock n’ Roll, Punk and Grunge hybrid ‘You’re To Blame’ lives this “this is what we do” simplicity.

What Buzzard Cult are excellent at, is lulling you into to their introspective, inward gloom as it ebbs and builds into what at the time seems like nothing before the intensity builds into a forlorn cathartic release. ‘Lucid Dreams’ is excellent at such. Find it in one of the EN house playlists – Here.

Much of the Post-Grunge world is very disappointing, this is a truth that many will not question but it is bands such as Buzzard Cult do their best (knowingly or not) to dispel such a criticism.

Prior to this debut studio release, the band released the very same in a live session format where the raw sound you have likely already sampled is all the more so. You’ll find it all linked at the end.

The band’s playfully distorted Rock n’ Roll twang permeates their onset gloom despite the overwhelming presence of the latter, allowing this raw, vintage rebellious fuzz to carry that oh-so-famous aesthetic.

"BUZZARD CULT grunge punk debut EP drops August 30"

BUZZARD CULT will drop its self-titled and self-recorded DIY debut EP on August 30. This band hits a lot of sounds that I dig so much: grunge, punk vocals, Southern rock, and that heavy fuzzed-out sound that gave me my name. Don't let the DIY recording keep you away. This sounds great, and what's punk without some rough edges? Check out the lead single "No Turning Back" on Bandcamp:

I really dig a band that can master a few different sounds, and use them when needed to fit the song. "No Turning Back" is more of a punk song, but then next up is "Ill Scheming" which slows it down and veers into grunge territory. Then "You're to Blame" finds a middle ground and is pretty much a Southern heavy rocker. And so it goes for 6 tracks. All the songs are solid and if I have to pick a favorite, it would be "Night is Dark" which blends their different sounds into a fuzzed-out uptempo grunged-out rocker with a killer guitar solo. - Fuzzy Cracklins

"Stoner Hive's Quick Fire Friday"

Buzzard Cult is a three piece Southern Grunge/Punk band based north of Atlanta, Georgia. We draw on a variety of influences ranging from Hardcore Punk, Grunge, Southern Rock, and Rock n' Roll. We copy pasted that from bandcamp so we could get drunk sooner. Drunk on their tunes and drunk on the atmosphere. Grungy and punky it is indeed… And for some weird and possibly insane reason it reminded us of the Belgian scene… A harder heavier version of dEUS, Zita Swoon and those crazies… Good stuff! - Stoner Hive
