"Beach scene, text game, draping still life — and pie — in graduate student art show"

Across the hall, Coley Mixan’s two hour-plus video, “Synkhra: Goddess of Music and Pie” played as the artist — its writer, director and chief performer — watched and took questions. She said. “I’m interested in the notion of historically queer feminists and performance art, how to use our own bodies as artwork in a physical way.”

As her video likeness played guitar, danced and engaged in costumed, occasionally pie-related antics, Mixan added, “For me, it’s the experience of just playing and being joyful. You own your mistakes. Failure is the best part of the fall — it’s the way into the creative moment. That and composing the music for the movie. And baking a lot of pies.” - UW Today

Bio

"Marvelous flavor combinations. Decadent guitar swells and thriving drum parts. These cakes are a dream-come-true." - Hannah Patterson, 24-Hour-Mart Co-Founder

"Exciting! On the verge of something huge." - Wynne Greenwood

Today's gold is cake. Tim Coleman, New Jersey born drummer & performance artist, and Coley Mixan, Nebraska native & creative conjurer, seek to claim the magical process of transformation, creation and combination that is found in both music and the metaphorical gesture of hospitality in shared pastries & cakes. Employing a passion for video art, bakeries and epic live performances, Cake "Alchemy!" is a decidedly original live band whose music has been compared to the likes of Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Tracy + The Plastics, TTNG & Annie Lennox. The music of Cake "Alchemy!" seeks to explore the themes of identity, post-humanism and global solidarity.

Formed as a band in late summer 2015, Cake "Alchemy!" is currently recording their first EP in Seattle, WA and playing several shows around the Northwest. Though a young band, the duo have already performed together at such legendary venues as The Vera Project, The Henry Art Gallery, Veronica Space & the University of Washington.

Cake “Alchemy!” is a band interested in using their songs to employ Human as verb. Often using video, still images, GIFS and clay sculptures on stage to provoke laughter and discomfort as a mirrored crisis of representation, Cake “Alchemy!” seeks to probe the theater of everyday existence and better understand the tradition of unexpected rock & roll.

Cake “Alchemy!” is dedicated to crafting songs and live experiences that resonate with hope and encourage a positive questioning of Self by an active, participatory audience. Their work comes from a tradition of experiencing music and live concerts as catharsis—composing songs that ooze with the Velveeta squish of familiarity and dissonance in order to dispute (and parody) American culture’s dominant norms and power structures. They disturb the consumerist and patriarchal mumbling of HyperCapitalism through their splattering, abrupt, saccharinely unappetizing (while blissfuly radioactive) guitar riffs and drum solos.
