"Local songwriter takes her talents on the road"

At 17 years old, Kokomo-native Claire Radel is proving she has what it takes to make a name for herself in Music City.

The local songwriter has been performing music and has traveled to places such as Nashville and Memphis to play within the popular music scenes.

During a recent trip to Nashville, Radel performed music at Two Old Hippies and Commodore Grille. Radel also took to the stage at The Blue Bird Café, a sought-after venue among up-and-coming songwriters in Nashville. Though she initially was nervous to play at the café, she felt it was an overall rewarding experience.

“It’s really cool. It’s an intimate kind of place. It’s really small and kind of hard when you’re in there because you have at least 20 to 30 songwriters in this small little space, so it gets kind of crowded,” said Radel. “The first time I played there I was really nervous, but I really enjoyed playing there.”

Taking her talents to Nashville gave Radel the chance to grow as an artist. While in Music City, she also attended a songwriting mentoring session and found ways to improve her work.

“It doesn’t hurt to rewrite songs,” said Radel. “Don’t take it personal if someone criticizes your work.”

Radel works diligently to perfect her craft. She currently is studying music theory, with plans to continue songwriting and performing and is scheduled to return to Nashville and Memphis this summer for performances.

Though she writes many songs with the accompaniment of her guitar, her music career began with piano lessons when she was in second grade. It was one instance in particular, when her brother received a new guitar for Christmas, that also sparked her interest in guitar.

“I started teaching myself, but my brother also would help me. I would watch YouTube videos and stuff like that,” said Radel.

Three years ago, she also began guitar lessons with Gary Rhum at Rhum Academy of Music to improve her skills. Now, Radel uses her abilities to continue songwriting. She gathers inspiration for her music through personal experiences.

“I can easily express what I’m feeling or can take a situation, something I’m going through or a friend is going through, and I’ll just take things from that and find inspiration and kind of write about it,” said Radel.

To add to her success, Radel recently was signed with Nashville Artist Management and has recorded some of her own music. She is also a Broadcast Music, Inc., songwriter and is a part of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. Radel also has performed numerous local events and has opened up for acts such as David Cook during Rhumfest in 2015.

Though currently a high school student, Radel is considering options for college and other post-high school plans. While she is open to different career options, preferably within the music industry, her ultimate dream is to tour and pursue a career as a performing artist. No matter her destination, Radel already is proving she has a promising future ahead of her.
