"Concert To Benefit School in Kenya"

ANDOVER — As many youth services participants campaign to raise money to build a new youth center in town, they are also working to help build classrooms for an African school thousands of miles away.

Andover Youth Services Director Bill Fahey said AYS has partnered with the Margaret Okari School in the village of Kisii, Kenya, for the past two years and is now working to raise funds to build high school classrooms there.

The Okari School is a boarding school for children, ages 5 through 17, many of whom have been orphaned by AIDS. Fahey first visited the school in May of last year to help plant trees and work on other sustainability issues at the school with his 9-year-old son, Colton, and Glenn Wilson, AYS assistant director.

While in Kisii, Fahey said he became intrigued by the musical talents of the school's young singers and told them he would return to make a record.

Six months later, he returned with the Andover-bred Grimis, a band made up of elementary school friends Andrew Doherty, Pete Michelinie and David Tanklefsky, to produce an album featuring the students and teachers. Fahey's daughter Summer, AYS coordinator Tony Lombardi and recording engineer Tom Blanford were also on the trip.

"They had never seen a microphone before," Fahey said of the students at the Okari School.

The two-disk, 33-track album, titled "I Am The One," is on sale for $20, with all the proceeds going to the Margaret Okari Children's Foundation.

Tomorrow, AYS is hosting a CD release and a Grimis concert at the Old Town Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20, with all the proceeds also going to the Okari School. A documentary on the recording project will be shown.

Grimis started performing together in 2001 at Andover High School. While the trio went their separate ways after graduating in 2004, they perform together on-and-off.

"It was really a life-affirming experience to go over there and record, it was really humbling for all of us," Tanklefsky said.

Fahey came up with the album title, "I Am The One," after hearing a girl at the school say the phrase, he said.

"I started thinking about me after hearing that," Fahey said. "I am the one who could help out the school. I am the one who can make a difference in this girl's life." - The Eagle Tribune (Lawrence, MA)

"Introducing: David Tanklefsky"

David Tanklefsky is a singer/songwriter from Cambridge, MA who has been bouncing around the greater Boston music scene for years–he played in bands like Grimis and Craig Martinson and the Heartbeats, among others. As a solo artist, he’s known for taking standard acoustic tracks and throwing a vicious twist at you somewhere along the way. (For an example, check out a recent cover he did of Titus Andronicus’ “Ecce Homo,” in which a baby’s voice interrupts the action halfway through the song.)

His latest two-track EP, Fools / The Cheap Seats, has more of this going on, especially the standout second track, “The Cheap Seats.” On the track, a Postal Service-esque beat is laid down for Tanklefsky to strum over, before the song is taken over by a raging guitar solo from Lyle Brewer of the Ryan Montbleau Band. The elements are discordant and work delightfully together, which is a sign, for me at least, of a song that’s working.

David Tanklefsky is a songwriter, guitarist, minor league baseball broadcaster, journalist, filmmaker and radio broadcaster from Boston, Massachusetts. Tanklefsky has been writing songs, recording and touring for the past ten years. His early musical years were spent in Grimis, the band he and his friends formed in high school that gained substantial recognition throughout the northeast, playing at Boston landmarks like the Paradise Rock Club and the Middle East. Grimis toured nationally and still plays a handful of concerts each year.

In the fall of 2010, Tanklefsky and Grimis traveled to the village of Kisii, Kenya to record the students at the Margaret Okari School. They produced a two-disc record: “Grimis Presents: I Am the One". They toured the northeast in the spring and fall of 2011, selling the record and screening his documentary about the project. So far, the album has raised more than $10,000 for the Margaret Okari Children's Foundation.

In 2011, Tanklefsky released his first solo EP, The Sun and the Shadows, on New Wheel Records.

His first full-legnth solo record, “Be Brave” was released on April 22, 2014 and followed up by a U.S. tour which included sold-out headlining shows at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn, NY and the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Tanklefsky has been a featured songwriter at Club Passim’s Campfire Music Festival as well as at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and on the Daytrotter music blog. He has performed with musicians and bands including Zammuto, Thao With the Get Down Stay Down, Apollo Sunshine, State Radio, Savoir Adore, Emil & Friends, The Slip and Piebald.
