"North Jersey Notes"

“They don’t make metal bands the way they used to, and Deadtide out of NYC makes playing metal look like child’s play. After listening to their song “Alteration,” I was hooked. I love melodic metal bands like Soilwork and In Flames, with technical guitar work that makes your head spin and vocalists that scream so hard that it makes you marvel at the fact that they can also sing melodically after all that. Singer Mike Metal (none of them have last names on their Facebook page. That is so metal!) sings with such ferocity, he reminds me of Johannes Eckerström from Avatar. As I listen to their 2017 single release “Begin the Dream,” I find it hard to believe these guys are even from New York and New Jersey. They’ve harnessed this European metal sound that no one is really doing locally. I love it!” - The Aquarian | Tim Louie

"Visual Rhetoric - December 2018"

“Upcoming melodic death metal act Deadtide returns with a new single/video that was recorded by Thomas Tjäder (who also did their video for “Begin the Dream”). Again the band shows a huge step up in both the musical and visual aspects with this video, with a variety of vocals and dynamics as the song progresses – everything from clean to harsh and acoustic to thrashy finds its way into the track, giving it an epic feel even within the 4-minute runtime. Some band footage alongside some shots along the Jersey Shore and Atlantic Ocean are a nice touch, suiting the reflective lyrics of the song. Don’t sleep on this band if you enjoy well-executed modern melodic death metal, it seems they are just about to break through.” - Dead Rhetoric | Kyle McGinn

"Melodic Death Metal 101 by Deadtide"

“Do you like melodic death music ? Do you have no idea how that sounds? Well, then it is time for you to listen to Deadtide, a band based in New Jersey that knows well that genre and they know how to introduce you to that kind of music!” - SoundBite Magazine

"Visual Rhetoric: October 2017"

“Modern melodic death metal act Deadtide successfully crowd-funded to get this, their first music video, created. Bringing in director Thomas Tjäder (In Flames, Pyramaze), their efforts are rewarded with a video that can stand up with the major league bands. While it does in fact, focus solely on the band, lots of close-up shots, some lyrics on the screen, and flashing lights provide more than enough entertainment for this catchy melodeath anthem. Deadtide carries the spirit of bands like Soilwork, In Flames, and Scar Symmetry into their music, and “Begin the Dream” is the quintessence of what they can do with a soaring chorus and addictive riffing. Top-notch videos like this one should get them some well-deserved exposure.” - Dead Rhetoric | Kyle McGinn

"DEADTIDE release debut video for BEGIN THE DREAM"

“Recently, melodic death metal act, Deadtide released their debut music video for the track Begin The Dream. I am a big fan of these guys. Their music is heavy, yet accessible and in Mike Metal they have a versatile vocalist that can growl and sing clean with the very best of what metal has to offer. The band is certainly no slouches either, unleashing barrage after barrage of crushing licks, blended with melody.” - Grim Reader Reviews

"Go Down ‘The Rabbit Hole’ With Deadtide"

It’s time to fall down The Rabbit Hole with the debut album from Deadtide!

Deadtide is a melodic death metal & metalcore band based out of New York and New Jersey. The band consists of members Mike (vocals), Phil (guitar), Max (lead guitar), Andrew (bass), and Daniel (drums).

Vocalist Mike and guitarist Phil met in college back in 2006. They started playing together and uploading YouTube videos that paved the way for the birth of Deadtide.

The guys have been rocking the metal world in various bands throughout the years and have had the honor of performing with the likes of Soilwork, Fear Factory, Unearth, and more.

The Rabbit Hole is Deadtide’s debut full-length album and takes listeners on a modernized death/metalcore adventure.

“Deadtide hungers for something more; roots that reach deep into the heart of the best of melodic death metal, breaking through the soil with the additions of other subgenres’ sounds, with a goal to blossom into something new for metal, and for music in general. Ripe with ideas ranging from the simple-creative, to the grandiose and spectacular, Deadtide yearns to do great things, simultaneously infecting audiences with feelings they’ll never forget”, says Deadtide.

I’ve been a fan of metalcore since high school so I was excited to get the opportunity to review this album. Upon first listen I was instantly hooked to the pounding rhythms, thunderous double-bass, soaring harmonies, atmospheric and horror-style synthesizers, and vast-ranged vocals that make Deadtide unique.

For anyone familiar with the 2011 video game Alice: Madness Returns, a horror action-adventure game inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, I feel like this would be a perfect soundtrack to listen to while playing.

While every song on The Rabbit Hole is dark, explosive, and just all around great in my opinion, I think my favorites are the title track “The Rabbit Hole”, “Finish The Nightmare”, and “Begin the Dream.”

The fact that The Rabbit Hole is such a strong debut, I’m highly anticipating more from them. If you’re a fan of death/metalcore, you have got to give Deadtide a listen! - Indie Band Guru

"Deadtide – The Rabbit Hole (Self-Released)"

Having caught Deadtide a few times live at this point over the years, it’s been nice to see their growth within the melodic death metal spectrum. The New York/New Jersey-based act has always embraced the older styles of melodeath, but as they have continued to grow, now reach into more modern and unique territory. The Rabbit Hole, as their first full-length, encapsulates that idea perfectly.

Hearing some of the older songs now rerecorded along with plenty of brand new cuts, it’s a great introduction for those who have not had the band on their radar. “Stargazer Syndrome” champions that older Gothenburg style riffing, with gorgeous melodies hand in hand with more frantic tempos. But the inclusion of some gentle keys in the background and some mellow moments (which also feature clean vocals) bring the band up to more modern times – giving them a playful mix of new and old to work off of instead of being rooted in one direction or the other. “Relentless” likewise plays off that mix of bouncy, upbeat melodies with a driving metallic force behind them that’s sure to catch any melodeath fan’s ear. On the more modern side of the coin is a track like “Osmosis,” which still retains that same urgent riffing mentality but brings more of a focus to big, melodic moments that have a slightly proggier and pure heavy metal vibe. Of course, that leads us to the most melodic cut on the album, “Purpose.” A catchy and more power ballad-y track that eschews the growls (yet retains the occasionally chunky riffs) and allows vocalist Mike Mindnich showcase how far he’s come with his clean vocals. It’s a nice palette cleanser in the middle of the release that offers some room for exploration as the band continues on.

Managing to capture some full-on fury and metallic glory and taper it with some beautiful sounding melodies, Deadtide really make their mark with The Rabbit Hole. The biggest strength is that of the constant, ear-catching melodies – be they musically, vocally, or both – and that alone should sell the band to the greater masses. There’s not a track that goes by that isn’t chockful of them. All of the other bits of goodness you can discover is the icing on the cake that will propel the band forward. An easy recommendation for melodic death or modern metal fans. Rating - 9/10 - Dead Rhetoric | Katarina McGinn

"El Tio Melodeath - Deadtide"

After years of waiting, Deadtide presents its first full-length production to enjoy a riveting Modern / Melodic Death!
The band already has a long history in the genre, since its beginnings date back to 2006 with members from New York and New Jersey. Their official debut took place 7 years later with the release of their first Ep entitled "Ephemeral" in which they presented a solid Melodic Death with which he captured a certain Swedish essence, in addition to presenting great gifts of Modern Metal that were fundamental for the definition of his sound that has characterized his previous productions, such as his second Ep "The Great Unknown" and later with the singles "Begin the Dream" and "Alteration" that were the first indications of his first full-length album that is an explosion of a Melodic Death in its most modern essence that will be liked by those followers of Orpheus Omega, Eyes Wide Open, With Heavy Hearts, I AM YOUR GOD and Meridian Dawn.
"The Rabbit Hole" is the title of this production that presents a very curious cover that takes up the theme of his last video "The Rabbit Hole" that I had the opportunity to share a few months ago and this was the first official promotional single of this production that after years of waiting, the band has finally been able to realize this has been released a couple of hours ago and it is a highly enjoyable and high quality production that demonstrates a polished sound and a new compositional level.
Songs to highlight: Finish the Nightmare, The Great Unknown,. Stargazer Syndrome and The Rabbit Hole. - El Tio Melodeath

"WSOU Street Patrol 2021 Year in Review"

With their first full length album release of The Rabbit Hole coming out in 2021, Deadtide has shaken up the melodic death metal scene for sure. This album can be listened from front to back, back to front, or any way in between and will be nothing short of amazing. With a mix of clean vocals and brutal screaming, these lyrics pair perfectly with scorching guitar solos and drum work. This is a band that could tour with Powerwolf, Death, or Judas Priest and fit into the show just as amazingly in each one.

The title track, The Rabbit Hole, is perhaps one of the best melodic death metal songs of all time. It evenly blends all the elements that create this genre, with the vocals and instrumentals varying within the song but all coming together nicely. For fans of a heavier or classic death metal feel, take a listen to “Finish the Nightmare,” Deadtide has been making the rounds at local clubs and bars after this last album and I personally cannot wait to get a circle pit going to these new tracks! - WSOU Street Patrol

Bio

Deadtide is a modern melodic death metal & metalcore band located in New York and New Jersey, but many people have so kindly mistaken the band as hailing from Sweden. Before the band Mike (“Mike Metal,” vocalist) and Phil (“Chrome,” guitarist) met in 2006 while studying advertising in college in New York. At its dawn, jam sessions and YouTube videos set a course for Deadtide's destiny. Two of the very first people ever to upload metal and guitar videos, Phil and Mike blazed a trail for what became the metal galaxy in the ever-expanding YouTube universe as we know it today. Now, the band has a solid lineup of Mike, Phil, Kenny, Andrew, and Daniel, who have been rocking in bands for 40+ collective years; sharing the stage with international acts such as Soilwork, Fear Factory, Unearth, Soulfly, Unleash The Archers, and many more.

The tasteful use of pounding rhythms, thunderous double-bass, soaring harmonies, atmospheric and horror-style synthesizers, and vast-ranged vocals from harsh to beautiful to powerful, embody the diversity of Deadtide.

The band focuses on composing catchy hooks that refuse to depart the minds of listeners, while remaining versatile, heavy, dark, haunting, and emotional, all while still managing to deliver positive, uplifting messages.

In a world full of ears fatigued by music that sounds “uninspired,” a cure is always present, though most may never realize it. Unsatisfied with the generic, Deadtide strives until they've achieved what they find so many other bands to be lacking today; true substance and vision. With Phil and Mike being difficult to satisfy aurally nowadays, they would much prefer to write something striking to them, themselves, at the level of their own high standards, because they know that listeners will enjoy it that much more. With hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, they have their fingers on the pulse of metal listeners. They know what metalheads want to hear and how to slice through a sea of noise. They recognize that it's all about injecting little nuances to make a passage shine. It's their time to give back to the music world for all that it's done for them in their own lives.

Deadtide hungers for something more; roots that reach deep into the heart of the best of melodic death metal, breaking through the soil with the additions of other subgenres' sounds, with a goal to blossom into something new for metal, and for music in general. Ripe with ideas ranging from the simple-creative, to the grandiose and spectacular, Deadtide yearns to do great things, simultaneously infecting audiences with feelings they'll never forget.

Mike's lyrics seamlessly blend themes that range from life and death, to space and the universe, to the energies and forces seen and unseen therein. He employs all the literary devices possible, alongside truth and myth, fact and fantasy, to paint vivid pictures within listeners' minds, as well as to convey powerful and profound concepts. Balancing relatable and novel concepts keeps things ever-interesting. Inspiring listeners and encouraging them to broaden their own knowledge on much of what school will not teach, the concepts serve to shatter realities and shift paradigms in the very ways his own have over the years. Above all, the lyrics induce thought outside the listeners’ realm of comfort, and propel the imagination into uncharted reaches, effortlessly.

In a world being invaded with mind-shrinking technology, Deadtide desires to inspire you to think. In a world so full of lies masquerading as truths, Deadtide wants you to question everything. In a world so numb, Deadtide loves to make you feel. To make you feel just how alone you are in a universe full of death... and surely... full of life beyond what we know; full of more than we could ever imagine. Full of mysteries beyond what we could ever fathom. Full of dimensions beyond where we may ever travel.
