"Radio Show/BuzzBands.LA"

Happy Friday, as I am liable to say at 11 a.m. when the Buzz Bands LA Show kicks off on The Independent FM. And it really is. I have two hours of mostly new music to share, including songs from Wages, Heathers, Honeyhoney, Sun Drug, Scott Bartenhagen, Sara Lov, Spectacular Spectacular, Spelles and Fake Furs. Also included: A flashback track by the Warlocks, who had the recent misfortune of having all their gear stolen and are playing Saturday night at the Bootleg (go support), and a cover song that actually brought a tear to my eye. - BuzzbandsLA

"FAKE FURS: -1 EP"

Things of note about the Fake Furs? There are only two of them. One of them (the singer/guitarist) is French. They are also filmmakers. And they just produced a six-track EP that doesn’t suck. Their reasoning for only releasing the six tracks was the ol’ “quality over quantity” deal, as it’s evident they put a lot of focus into the production of each of the six tracks. But this also means that certain tracks, I won’t name any names (cough, “Sick Childs”) seem completely out of place in the midst of the heavier, machismo-filled rest of the album, each song seeming to have a pushing, sunburst moment of climax.
Their band philosophy seems to be: “We don’t give a fuck, but we’re not dicks about it. We want to do something pretty with how much we don’t give a fuck.” And while I didn’t hear some revolutionary new sound, the ways they used old sounds and styles made me keep listening. About mid-track on each song of the EP, the band always experimented with something interesting—whether that be a synthesizer sound or the way they mixed tracks like “Teenage Scatterer” toward the end, creating an effect similarly used in King Missile. (Yeah, there is a music technical term here, but I don’t know it.) So, I’d say this EP is worth a download. The band doesn’t really care if you like it, but you probably will like that about it.

"LA's Best 2011 (3rd place)"

After a long and arduous voting process, our Deli jurors have rated all the Los Angeles artists that submitted to be considered for our Year End Best of Los Angeles Poll for Emerging Artists – the competition was especially fierce this year, but I can only attribute it to the fact that the LA music scene was simply exceptional. The artists in the list will quality for the next phase of the poll, and will be added to the bands nominated by our jury of local scenemakers. So without further a do…

3b. Fake Furs
Do Fake Furs make fun of the consumer driven faux-everything side of LA in how they name themselves? Possibly, but the defining factor that gives this duo gravitas is their propulsive riffage, warped lyrics, and spastic rhythmic grooves. It’s all a bit unusual – they even splatter messy synth lines into their considerably boisterous uproar. To be fair, the nihilistic posturing is apropos with its all-around amplified timbre. - Deli Magazine

"LA's Best, 2012 (2nd place)"

We've tallied the results for the Open Submissions stage of our LA Area Year End Poll. All of the submissions were ranked by Deli Editors from other scenes, and the list of acts that have advanced to our Readers’/Fans’ Poll phase are below. We will also be releasing the list of nominees chosen by our local "scene expert" jurors very soon.

Thanks to all the rad folks who submitted their heart and soul to us - we never received as many submissions from LA as this year! Our open submissions pool was truly a celebration of the LA Area's talent and diversity.

Total submissions from the LA Area Scene: 85

Bio

Fake Furs are the shadows lurking in the depth of the night. Fake Furs are the sound of your ancient reel-to-reel film projector echoing in your cold, cold living room. Fake Furs are, after all, the fire that self-combusts at the most impromptu instant.

Fake Furs is when Sonny Wong, born in the USA, met László Bolender, born in France.

First contact was initiated on a film set for which Sonny Wong (drums, etc.) was the cinematographer and Laszlo Bolender (vocals, etc.) was the sound operator, the band released their first EP, -1, in a just a few days after forming. The band’s characteristics were then immediately delineated: a distillation of intoxicating drum beats and guitar noise, lead by strong melodies and supported by the low end of a triangular waveform from an analog monophonic synthesizer. Their sound, that they like to coin Dirty Velvet Rock, was at last brought into being.

While playing an extensive amount of shows in the L.A. area, they went in the studio at Triangle Wave Records, László’s personal studio/sound lab, to push the boundaries further with their first LP, Follow The Guns. As they continued to play various shows — some official and some secret — Fake Furs took the time in between to produce a second record called Fragments again at Triangle Wave Records.
