"Finding Lucy's The New Normal"

Finding Lucy
The New Normal

Indie rock doesn’t mean what it used to. A few years ago, it meant playing muddy basements or recording in bedrooms, coating your songs in dissonant guitar noise and occasionally (Guided By Voices comes to mind) including some strong pop hooks underneath the hiss and distortion.

But now, a band like Columbia’s Finding Lucy can accurately identify themselves as “indie rock” with a polished, perfectly performed EP like The New Normal, recorded locally at Archer Avenue Studio by Kenny McWilliams.

On the surface, there’s a lot to like about the band and the record. The songs encompass precision-tuned, guitar-heavy rock with soaring choruses and passionate vocals. Kicking off with a song called “Still The Same,” the band sticks to the blueprint for making solid modern rock songs, with crisp guitars, tight rhythms and mile-wide hooks.

Then they do it again on the next track, “Nostalgia.” Then they do it again on “Dispute.” And before you know it, the six songs are over, and in a sense, it’s like you’ve just listened to one long, 20-minute song.

It’s difficult to call a release by a band this talented mediocre, but there’s nothing here that surprises or deviates from the formula. There’s nothing that would necessarily stand out on the radio, which is the place these songs seem crafted to fit.

After listening to The New Normal, it’s interesting to go back and listen to the band’s 2015 EP, Long Live the Problem Child. It sounds like the two releases could’ve been recorded at the same time, and for a band that’s been together five years, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

There’s nothing wrong with consistency, and no group is required to do something out-of-left-field original each time out. But with four players this good, it would be nice if the results were a little more interesting. - Free Times

"Under the Radar: Finding Lucy"

Its rhythm section is somewhat raw and ragged, but otherwise, Columbia quintet Finding Lucy fits snugly into the emo-meets-punk-and-pop mode, somewhere between Blink 182 and Green Day. On this year's Long Live the Problem Child EP, the hooks are huge, the lyrics are heart-on-the-sleeve direct, and the playing is tight and melodic. - Free Times

"Finding Lucy @ British Bulldog"

Finding Lucy — On its new EP, The New Normal, recorded locally at Archer Avenue Studio by Kenny McWilliams, Finding Lucy specializes in precision-tuned, guitar-heavy rock with soaring choruses and passionate vocals. The band sticks to the blueprint throughout, delivering solid modern rock songs with crisp guitars, tight rhythms and mile-wide hooks. It’s very much of a piece with the previous release, Long Live The Problem Child, showing the group can consistently produce tight, catchy pop-punk. Bio

Finding Lucy is an emerging Indie Rock band from Columbia, South Carolina that has received an impressive level of national and international attention for a new group. Today's band members include Grayson Alexander (vocals, guitar, keys), Logan Charles (vocals, guitar), Alex Nolan (bass) and Evan Moore (drums). Influenced by bands like Go Radio, Mayday Parade, and From Indian Lakes, Finding Lucy features unique, powerful arrangements, captivating hooks and lyrics that reflect the social maze of their generation.

Finding Lucy began as a hobby for Grayson and his friends in 2011, but the potential for developing the band into something more was evident after their first show in Charleston, SC in 2012. The hobby became a serious pursuit in March of 2014 after performing during the St. Patrick's Day Festival in downtown Columbia with new bassist Alex Nolan. Multiple engagements followed as the group's immense talent became evident to some local and regional promoters.
In May of 2015, they released their first studio EP, "Long Live the Problem Child", and played their first summer festival in June (Carolina Craft Beer and Music Festival in Winston Salem, NC). Finding Lucy's first single release ("This Time") spent a total of 13 weeks on national digital radio airplay charts, climbing to #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #10 on the Rock chart on September 26, 2015. (www.digitalradiotracker.com) The band released their newest studio EP, "The New Normal", on May 21 of this year and has plans to launch a national FM radio campaign soon.

In his review of Finding Lucy's new project, Vincent Harris of FreeTimes writes, "A band like Columbia’s Finding Lucy can accurately identify themselves as “indie rock” with a polished, perfectly performed EP like The New Normal, recorded locally at Archer Avenue Studio by Kenny McWilliams. On the surface, there’s a lot to like about the band and the record.
